About Wolfgang Porsche

In a 2018 interview for his 75th birthday, Wolfgang Porsche discussed his favorite Porsche models. He stated that while success cannot be planned, the 911 has proven itself over 50 years through continuous development. He also remarked that it is important not to constantly change cars, noting that while the 911’s form is altered, the changes are often invisible and the basic shape remains the same. Porsche commented on newer models, expressing enthusiasm for the Panamera Hybrid plug-in, which he linked to his grandfather’s early hybrid technology. He described an older Carrera model as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" due to its sporty nature and understated appearance.

Well now the time has come to address a man who has truly made a name for himself not only in Salzburg but also around the world. Somebody who's shown through their competence, creativity, and innovation that he is worthy to become part of the Otto best Hall of Fame. And somebody besides you, Mr. Mozart, but besides me in my own town. This man is also from Salzburg and like you has Wolfgang as his first name. Obviously this man must be very special, someone who exceeds all expectations, someone who inspires, hires, and never retires. Please applaud Mr. Wolfgang Porsche. Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, shareholder and chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche Automobil Holding SE and of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, will celebrate his 75th birthday on May 10, 2008. At Otto best we have decided to celebrate his birthday in advance by welcoming him into our Auto Best Hall of Fame. This is the global unique gallery dedicated to the icons of the automotive world. Ladies and gentlemen, Wolfgang Porsche was born in Stuttgart on May 10, 1943 as the youngest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche. His grandfather was the brilliant automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche. Wolfgang spent the first six and a half years of his life at the Schüttgut in Salzburg. He obtained his Abitur in 1965 and passed his journeyman examination as a metalworker. He earned a degree in business administration and a doctorate in international business. He started as an independent entrepreneur, became managing director of John Moto and general importer of Yamaha motorbikes in Austria. He returned to Germany in 1976 and worked for Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart. Upon the death of his father Ferry in 1998, he was selected as spokesperson of the entire Porsche family. Once he joined the family business, Dr. Porsche dedicated his entire professional energy to the automotive world. He has been instrumental in the development of Porsche AG and later the Volkswagen Group. Dr. Porsche is always humble, proactive, building bridges, trusting competent people, looking for fair solutions, and building value for his family and over 630,000 employees. He became an advocate for the Volkswagen transformation into a world-leading EV company. As a private person, Dr. Porsche lives in Salzburg and at the Schüttgut, where he operates an Alpine organic farm with 200 dairy cows. He is an ardent hunter and close to nature. His enthusiasm for sports cars has been the focus of his life. He has a private collection of rare Porsche vehicles which he drives regularly. People like you are becoming harder to come by in our industry. People who don't think of themselves as important but rather the matter at hand, who look behind the facade and make the right decision without wavering, who stand up for their convictions, and who even at 75 have kept their boyish mischievous charm. You have followed your inner compass your entire life, always able to foresee the future and fight for the team. You stand rock-solid by your roots and the tasks from your grandfather and father. This commitment to your roots means being loyal to your companions and true to yourself. You never wanted to be anyone else other than the one and only Wolfgang Porsche.

Dear Mr. Bhalla, ladies and gentlemen, what an evening. I am speechless for the moment. What can I say after such a laudation? First, I am proud and happy to be honored for my life's work. Thank you, Mr. Bhalla, for your kind words and this distinguished speech. In such moments, I find it interesting to learn something new about me and my life, something I didn't know or had forgotten. It doesn't happen every day that I hear so many flattering words. Usually my family is much stricter with me. But I admit I enjoyed the speech. Second, becoming a member of this global unique gallery dedicated to the icons of the automotive world is a great honor and a really good feeling. Thank you, dear voting committee, for choosing me. And what an excellent idea to come here to this beautiful place. Thank you for choosing our festival house for tonight's celebration. Last but not least, it is wonderful to have you all here. Thank you for sharing this special moment with me. Yes, dear Mr. Boddy, you are right. For many decades now, I have been strongly committed to our family's companies: Porsche Holding Salzburg, Porsche AG, Porsche SE, and the Volkswagen Group. In all these years, I have experienced a lot: victories in motorsport, pioneering business decisions, technological revolutions. But there were also failures, setbacks, critical situations. It was a constant up and down. In the long run, this experience helped me keep my feet firmly on the ground and today helps me follow the current developments. You all know what I mean. We are in the midst of a tsunami of change, speed, development, and transformation in the industry, especially in the automotive sector. This is worrying a lot of people, which I can understand. But despite all these concerns, what we need is to make sure we manage the process and change professionally and in cold blood. There is no stopping this process; we cannot turn the clock back. But with the typical Porsche character in mind—patience and passion—we will stay ahead of the field. Ladies and gentlemen, if you promise not to tell, I honestly admit I don't need all these new things. The truth is I enjoy driving a Porsche, keeping my hands firmly on the steering wheel. But I know at the end of the day, it is not about what I want; it is always about what the market and the customers want. That is and has always been our guideline. That is why Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche are developing connected services, electric vehicles, and investing billions in autonomous driving. I promise as long as I can, I will continue to contribute the experience I have and all my energy to our companies. I believe this is my responsibility. With this in mind, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Boddy, thank you for the honor. Thank you for inducting me into your Hall of Fame. I wish you a splendid evening in our wonderful festival house. Thank you.
