About Peer Swinkels

Peer Swinkels, CEO of Royal Swinkels Family Brewers (formerly Bavaria), has discussed the company's 2018 rebranding from Bavaria to Royal Swinkels Family Brewers, stating that the change was made to reflect the company's expansion from a single brewery to seven breweries and 26 brands across 120 countries. He said the family name was chosen to emphasize the company's status as an independent family business. Swinkels has also spoken about the company's 300-year history, noting that only a small percentage of family businesses survive to the third generation, and described his focus on long-term strategy and continuous transformation. Swinkels has recounted the company's 2010 marketing stunt involving orange dresses at a World Cup match, which he said generated significant international press attention. He has also discussed the company's international growth strategy, including the acquisition of an importer in the United States and partnerships in England. Swinkels described meeting Playboy founder Hugh Hefner during a commercial shoot, characterizing Hefner as a "legend" with self-deprecating humor. He has also spoken about receiving Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at the brewery in 2019 during the company's 300th anniversary celebrations.

Good afternoon. Here in Veghel, at the brewery, I want to discuss family businesses in the Netherlands. There are about 275,000 family businesses, accounting for half of employment. Few survive beyond the third generation. I am from the seventh generation of our family brewery. Our company values family as everyone who works here. The key is making your business future-proof. In the brewery sector, company lifespans have shortened over time. I grew up near the brewery, starting work at age 12 in various roles like forklift driver and bottling plant jobs. I traveled with my father to Italy, learning to share with big retail clients. My mother was informally involved. Family business can be a blessing but also challenging. Success requires adapting to changing reality, continuous transformation, and investing in innovation. We embrace new technology and finance smartly. Employee well-being is crucial. Research shows happy people are more productive. Many in the Netherlands experience burnouts, so creating a healthy work environment is essential. We focus on building relationships, learning from mistakes, and celebrating success. Confidence leads to happiness. In family business, the family is paramount, creating a sense of belonging. It's about people and their personal growth. I aim to be part of the 5% of family businesses that survive to the tenth generation. My mission is to ensure our business is future-proof for the next generation, for my family and for employees. History is not just about building a family business, but about building a business with the family.
