About Gurdeep Singh

Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, spoke at the company's Q1 FY27 earnings concall and annual analyst meeting in mid-2026, outlining NTPC's strategy for India's energy transition. He described the company's approach to energy security as resting on three pillars: coal, renewable energy combined with storage, and nuclear power, noting that NTPC is active in all three areas. Singh also discussed operational trade-offs, stating that when renewable curtailment is needed for only an hour or two, it is preferable to curtail renewables rather than shut down thermal plants, to avoid evening power shortages. Singh addressed the company's financial outlook, saying NTPC is comfortable with regulated returns of around 15.5 percent, which he estimated translates to net returns of 12 to 13 percent, describing these as healthy and sustainable. He cautioned against impulsive market reactions, emphasizing the importance of continuity and sustainability in investment decisions. Under his leadership, NTPC has set a target of 250 gigawatts of capacity by fiscal year 2037, with a portfolio spanning conventional, renewable, nuclear, and emerging energy businesses.
