Trina Ner0:29
Rebecca, you've been with Ping An for many years and you've watched this business grow. What do you see in terms of the insurance market in China today and its potential?
F
Fu Xin0:37
China's transformation over the past four decades has been remarkable, evolving into the world's second largest economy. The structural shift towards a service-driven economy is exciting, with services accounting for 57% of GDP. Key opportunities include the rise of China's middle class, now exceeding 400 million people, and demographic shifts driving demand for wealth management, healthcare, and senior care. Ping An has built deep expertise in these areas. The insurance market is 5.7 trillion RMB in 2024 premiums, with only 4.2% penetration, indicating significant growth potential. We see long-term structural growth and are uniquely positioned to capture these trends.
T
Trina Ner3:09
The market potential is massive, with China having four times the population of the US. What's the Chinese government doing to support the development of the insurance industry?
F
Fu Xin3:19
The regulator has introduced new guidelines centered on intense regulation, risk prevention, and high quality development, while emphasizing international competitiveness. Two key policies stand out: the guarantee interest rate adjustment for life insurance to address low interest rates, and the alignment of filing and actual expenses to improve transparency and market discipline. These reforms balance stability and innovation, laying the groundwork for a customer-centric insurance ecosystem.
T
Trina Ner5:38
Ping An's insurance market is highly competitive with product homogenization. How does Ping An differentiate itself?
F
Fu Xin5:53
Ping An stands apart with competitive advantages: our business model, scale, distribution channel, and technology. Our integrated finance plus healthcare plus senior care model creates a closed-loop ecosystem, leading to stickier customer relationships and higher lifetime value. We have unmatched scale with 240 million retail customers, covering nearly one in six people in China, with over 120 million high-potential customers aged 13 to 45. This is high and valuable scale.
T
Trina Ner7:32
With 240 million retail customers, channels and technology are critical. Can you elaborate?
F
Fu Xin7:41
Ping An has multi-channel distribution with China's largest agent force of over 60,000 and nationwide branches, plus top-tier digital platforms. This hybrid approach drives market penetration and cost efficiency. Technology is our secret weapon: AI-driven risk management, operating automation, and big data enable hyper-personalization, precise underwriting, and industry-leading profitability.
T
Trina Ner8:35
Technology benefits customer experience and profitability, but there's also rich data insights. How does Ping An activate these advantages?
F
Fu Xin8:44
We activate technology advantages through our 'insurance plus services' strategy. By leveraging behavior insights from 240 million customers, we identify unmapped needs and deploy our ecosystem to deliver tailormade combinations of insurance plus services like healthcare. This transforms us from a policy provider to a lifelong partner, locking in loyalty and margins.
T
Trina Ner9:31
So you're anticipating customer needs. Jing, as Group Chief Scientist, your team has worked on innovations in life, health, and property insurance. Tell us about that.
S
Shiao Jing9:51
Let me start with insurance claims. As the industry grows, claims increase, leading to issues like longer processing times, labor shortages, high costs, and fraud risks. Ping An leverages AI across all scenarios, from risk assessment to claim processing. For example, in auto insurance, when car accidents happen, processing claims is time-consuming. Ping An developed a smart claims system with AI where customers take pictures of damage, file claims on the app, and the claim is automatically processed in seconds with precise payment calculation. The system uses AI technologies like image processing, object detection, knowledge graphs, and anomaly classification. It processes over 50,000 claims daily, improving efficiency and preventing billions in fraud. The system has been exported to over 50 insurance companies through OneConnect platform.
T
Trina Ner12:17
Jing, you've talked about fraud risk. Rebecca, how is technology impacting risk management?
F
Fu Xin12:26
AI has become a game-changer in risk management. In 2024, our P&C smart anti-fraud system prevented potential losses of nearly 12 billion yen, a 10% improvement from 2023. AI systems enhance underwriting accuracy, reduce false claims, and improve pricing through continuous learning. This creates a transparent ecosystem, rewarding honest policyholders with accurate pricing and faster claims, aligning business success with customer value.
T
Trina Ner13:54
Jing, tell us more about Ping An's smart risk management system and the technologies behind it.
S
Shiao Jing14:02
In the big data era, information is complex. Knowledge graphs organize information and relationships for specific purposes. Ping An developed enterprise knowledge graphs for risk assessment. With nearly 200 million registered enterprises in China, data comes from commercial operations, public announcements, and business relationships. We process dynamic data, automatically interpreting legal proceedings and updating news signals every 10 minutes. Deep graph analysis algorithms support risk assessment, predicting risks in enterprise networks.
T
Trina Ner16:03
It's fascinating how data is updated in real time. Insurance still relies on human interactions. Ping An has over 360,000 agents and began digital transformation in 2022. How has Ping An leveraged Gen AI to support sales agents?
F
Fu Xin16:40
Three years ago, we transformed our sales force with an AI-empowered ecosystem covering recruitment, training, and performance enhancement. By analyzing data from top performers, we identified that EQ, attitude, and social intelligence are key success factors. AI persona models screen candidates, and AI interviews assess competencies. This has led to 13 quarters of double-digit growth in agent productivity. AI-powered training includes digital agents for hyper-realistic simulations and personalized learning paths, resulting in 50% faster onboarding. For example, AI tools helped agents quickly acquire knowledge about new participating insurance products. Our intelligent assistant, AskBob, offers task management, smart Q&A, and coaching, handling over 13 million inquiries per month and serving 95% of agents. Our smart CRM anticipates customer needs, providing marketing materials and enhancing sales efficiency. We focus on creating AI-enabled super agents, not replacing humans.
T
Trina Ner20:53
Another key differentiator is the integration of health and senior care services with financial services. Rebecca, what's the rationale?
F
Fu Xin21:03
This integration is a core competitive advantage driving real business results. Last year, live and health new business value grew 29% year-on-year, with nearly 80% of new policy customers opting into healthcare and senior care services. Customers using integrated services have AUM nearly four times higher. This transforms relationships from transactional to long-term partnerships. By meeting needs through our ecosystem, we become partners in health and retirement, creating a flywheel effect of better services, more engaged customers, and higher policy uptake.
T
Trina Ner23:26
How does technology fit into this?
F
Fu Xin23:31
Technology is the engine. We created a healthcare ecosystem where customers using wearables earn rewards like premium discounts. AI analyzes health data for personalized wellness programs. With 240 million customers, nearly half under 45, our AI identifies patterns to develop dynamic pricing models and effective wellness incentives. We identify when banking customers might be ready for insurance products through healthcare programs. This increases engagement and lifetime value.
T
Trina Ner25:41
Shifting to climate change, Ping An has tech innovations in this space. Rebecca, tell us about Ping An's efforts.
F
Fu Xin25:56
Risk mitigation services go beyond insurance by reducing risk likelihood and costs. We developed Eagle Eye, a digital risk system for early disaster alerts.
T
Trina Ner26:32
Jing, tell us about Eagle Eye and how it works.
S
Shiao Jing26:37
Eagle Eye is China's first risk mitigation service platform independently developed by an insurance company. It's used across insurance lines, helping reduce disaster-related losses by billions of RMB. The platform has four core modules: natural disaster management, accidental incident response, safety liability services, and IoT connectivity. It aggregates over two trillion records of data, using numerical simulations, machine learning, and remote sensing for predictive modeling, real-time hazard identification, 24/7 early warnings, and proactive interventions.
T
Trina Ner28:00
Eagle Eye warned customers in Beijing about a hail storm. How often are warnings issued?
S
Shiao Jing28:06
In 2024, Eagle Eye identified over 3,600 high-risk cases and issued 10 billion disaster alerts through AI phone calls, mobile apps, and text messages, covering over 67 million customers across property, auto, and agriculture insurance, strengthening disaster prevention and response capabilities.
T
Trina Ner28:46
Data privacy is a concern with AI. Does the insurance industry risk overstepping privacy boundaries?
F
Fu Xin29:02
There are strict firewalls between business units on sharing customer data, and consent is obtained. Collaboration between legal, technology, and sales teams ensures compliance. The regulator is improving data protection laws, and we are confident our practices are future-proof.
T
Trina Ner29:39
You've both shared AI innovations helping Ping An redefine customer experiences. Rebecca, what is Ping An's way forward in the next 3 to 5 years in insurance?
F
Fu Xin30:01
Our roadmap centers on disciplined, high-impact technology deployment. We prioritize three dimensions: scalability in high-volume areas like anti-fraud and claims; value creation through clear revenue growth or competitive advantages; and operational efficiency in human-capital intensive processes. For example, our operating cost increased only 80% while revenue increased 800% due to technology. We turn our ecosystem into a competitive lab, pressure-testing innovations at scale before rolling out. We focus on prudent capital allocation on high ROI use cases, continuous scaling of proven solutions, and strategic deployment of data sets to create self-reinforcing advantages.
T
Trina Ner32:25
Jing, as a scientist, what are Ping An's big bets in technology for the next 3 to 5 years?
S
Shiao Jing33:22
Ping An has a gold mine of data, and tools are improving. We are advancing the deep integration of AI and big data platforms to develop professional financial advisors, family doctors, and elderly care managers. Strategic directions include deepening domain-specific AI models, solidifying AI platforms for efficient training and deployment, enhancing AI agent platforms, and constructing architectures with fast and slow thinking capabilities. We collaborate with business units to upgrade AI solutions, expand application scenarios, and develop AI native applications.
