Of course I have an opinion. What we are experiencing is the black swan – a unique situation. Trend 1: The German construction industry follows the economy; the Ifo indicator dropped dramatically but the economy has recovered. Trend 2: Globalization – Germany is highly exposed (90% trade openness) and hit hard by trade disruptions. The golden age is over. Trend 3: Digitalization – we reduced it to Industry 4.0, missing business model innovation; that handicap is irreversible. Decarbonization is correct but brings green inflation; exiting coal and nuclear simultaneously was a mistake. Demographics will cause trend growth to fall below 1% by 2030, lasting until ~2040.

I think it's very important that we now have a building ministry and we are working to create a at least partially digitized, ideally largely digitized building permit landscape. The 14 state building codes are somewhat in the way, and there is no approach where the federal government says, 'I'll invest, say, one, five, or ten billion to really create this digital building permit infrastructure.' That would pay off from a political level over the next few years. The return on investment for that not even ten billion would be extremely good because we would get a grip on the time delays in government effects – building permits that take not just three but often six or twelve months. That is a point this topic addresses: speed. I believe the public framework conditions must move in the direction that we are able to implement infrastructure, buildings technically, and also transport infrastructure. We have a race with exponential technological acceleration for the meaningful implementation of future-oriented technologies – a race between the Americans, the Chinese, and the Europeans. We Europeans have tied the most blocks to our legs and put nice concrete stones in our backpack and then try to run, while the Americans accelerate with their almost reckless capitalism, all Elon Musk, and the Chinese with unrestrained autocracy. We need the European acceleration path, and we must all put our heads together now on how we can quickly, for example, compensate for issues like species protection and particular interests quickly and fairly so that we can still carry out our measures. Otherwise, we will not be able to enforce our sustainability and innovation that we need as a country and as a continent in global competition in time. We need a collective acceleration offensive in Germany and in Europe to remain competitive.

Now we've briefly mentioned Henry. Now we have a building ministry. Is that the big breakthrough you need? What do you expect from it? Will everything be different now?
J
Jörg Kampmeyer31:34
That remains to be seen. The building ministry is certainly not the only force at work. There are many particular interests, associations, structures that want change and are making changes. Let's not fool ourselves: the fragmentation, the complexity in approvals – all of that is also protection against change. Why is there no test construction industry here? Because they will all fail. I've now spoken several times with our own small company Opitz, but also about such minus-grade modules... So we are also trying to advance modern forms of construction, but they all fail due to the fragmented approval regulations. And what is the consequence? Companies go elsewhere, where it's easier, where they can scale better, and we lose the chance we have now. So I really expect a contribution from legislation. When we bring sustainability into play, I also expect simplification and the willpower from legislation. We could today – there is the only building material that is endlessly recyclable, 100 percent. Why can't we do that? Because the legislation, unlike all other countries around us, cannot pass a law that simply defines the recyclate of this material. Give me a fiber size that is allowed, and then I can do it. But there is no zero, I can't prove that, not even my electron microscope can. But if it were a win-win situation, the question is why doesn't it exist? If something doesn't exist in our democracy, it's because there is no will beyond politics. I agree with you there. But I also miss in the problem at the political level that there are no people who want to take on this issue heartily. It's fragmented, complicated, and not relevant to voters. You just can't find anyone who says, 'I'll take that on.' We have endless discussions, everyone says it's great, no matter which faction you talk to, but in the end you find no one who says, 'I am the sponsor for that.' The third topic I want to address is costs. In the context of this transformation, the government must also understand how much is bearable for us as companies. We are already not a cheap location. Energy costs are unbearably high, and on top of that comes the CO2 burden. We have to be careful that in this overall package that has just been put together, for companies in energy-intensive industries like ours, it may at some point no longer be viable to run this business, especially for local players.

Who do you think that from the political level, does it need a hearty grab now, or perhaps loosen the reins a bit again?

Both points. And if it were up to me, I would have only one answer. I once had the opportunity to work in the Chancellery under Helmut Schmidt, and I learned a very important sentence: In politics, every shaping step must be preceded by procuring majorities or a process. That is democratic politics. That is exactly the problem. Because here the small parts are taken. We want the small... Germany, the resistance is all the greater, and that is exactly the problem we have. Perhaps one possibility would be if certain decisions were really delegated upward, then the pressure would not be as great as at the municipal level. That's why one can ask whether building regulations really have to be regionalized. The more regionalized they are, the more difficult it is to organize the required majority beforehand.

Following on from that, let me try to go one level deeper. Henrik, as an entrepreneur, you can influence many things and exert influence on the political and regulatory level. But in the end, you also have to make decisions as an entrepreneur every day. For the short, medium, and long term, what does that mean for you, Goldbeck, concretely in terms of sustainable transformation? What are the two or three most important topics and how do you approach them or look at the topic?

First of all, we really took an anamnesis to see where sustainability affects us and what dimensions it has. In the end, we found ten different verticals, in new German, where we as a company want and must become more sustainable. That is now the right analysis basis to create what we have in each dimension, how we are positioned, where we are now, where we want to go. It is a very meticulous analytical process. Next year, we will be CO2 neutral at the scope 2 level, i.e., company level. We have eliminated and reduced many things, and last but not least, also compensated. Then, excitingly, we also want to be able to present CO2 neutrality at the scope 3 level, including all gray energy, including the complete materiality of the products. But it also has many, many other dimensions. In every area, we are now looking for responsible persons to really integrate that into every area of our processes, our products, and daily life. I would say as a basic hum or as a paradigm, as an action, to integrate into our company. And that only works with a very clear commitment from the top that we want to live that at all levels in all areas. But for that, we first need transparency: what does that mean in all areas? That is difficult analytical work, but yes, we are doing it.

Now you produce the raw materials, building materials, that Goldbeck later needs, also very energy-intensive. Do you have a different view on that, or how do you approach the topic?
J

I think, listening to Jan-Hendrik, he is already a bit further than we are. We are right in the middle of the process of first really understanding for ourselves, as you already mentioned, our product is energy-intensive. In the end, there is a plasterboard – a very simple process: you take gypsum stone, grind it, add water and a binder, then spray it onto paper, and then dry it. All of that uses gas. So gas is the largest external cost block we have. That is a real issue. So we are working intensively, with highest priority, to understand how we can particularly reduce this aspect. The second aspect is transport. Very difficult because the industry is still in the finding phase. Then we are at the productivity topic: how must transport in the future run so that it is productive, economically sensible, and sustainable for all? I think not only we are at the very beginning, but the industry is also still in the finding phase. The third topic is the building itself. And that is exciting for our industry because, as just said, our product is completely recyclable, and we have the ambition to deliver a fully recyclable product to Jan-Hendrik in a very short time. Everything he gets from us can be 100% recycled. That brings a real contribution to the construction site. And then the last and probably most important: a lightweight wall. For example, a lightweight wall with gypsum has about a third to a quarter of the CO2 input into a building compared to a solid wall. That means we also have a huge task now, together with the regulatory authorities, the approval authorities, and our customers, to bring modern construction forward. We are working on these topics, but we still need a few months to bring that into a nice presentation. We saw some of that this morning.

I'll come back to what you said at the beginning: the topic of digitalization and a special focus on business models. We also talked about materials and processes. Now we are here today, it's also about innovation and startups. How important is innovation at this point, and the related question: what contribution can startups make, or how do you see that?
J

The world of models and platforms is, I think, already taken. You would have to be very creative. The world of platforms is largely taken. What I still see is that Germany actually has a huge backlog. We are a country of engineers, but we digitalize architecture and planning far too little. There is still a great need there. The big number will come with the new big business models. We don't need a German Tritt? The world is distributed. But at this level, we still have a lot of catching up to do, and there is high potential. That's why I always – I used to do sports, decathlon – you have to practice all disciplines, but especially the ones you are good at. Because in the disciplines you are bad at, you will at best be mediocre, but in those where you are already better, you will become good. That's what the German construction industry should consider: what can we do, where do we have comparative advantages? We should not work heavily on deficits – we should get rid of them – but we must always start where we have the highest marginal benefit. And I see that exactly in this area.

Henrik just mentioned the Tesla of the construction industry. You haven't seen it yet, or they have driven past it or crashed into the wall, to stay in a metaphorical image. What would you wish for? What does the construction industry need? Is it not the Tesla? What would be a different analogy?
J
Jan-Hendrik Goldbeck44:31
I think the basic approach of Tesla, if you transfer it in the sense of integrating many value chains, the possibility of modularized upgrades, perhaps even remote software upgrades for buildings, and really optimizing the value chain holistically at the decisive points – that is not entirely wrong. And that is also our endeavor: with a clear yes to an impulse from the attempts, to innovate across value chain stages. What we lack far too much in the German landscape is actually an innovation department. We started a few years ago to shamelessly say, yes, we want to afford people. Meanwhile, depending on how you look at it, 150 to 200 people are dealing with innovations day in, day out. Some of you experienced that live today. That is a topic that we need across the entire industry and in various disciplines. It costs, of course, but only then do we get new topics like generative computational design, automated planning steps to eliminate existing inefficiencies. Materials science is enormously important, as is the clear will to give new materials a chance. Regulatorily, it's a struggle to get approval for a new material; years go by. Here too, we must remove bureaucratic hurdles so that we can try things out faster and put them into practice. That is the big problem of the construction industry: on paper, things look simple, and then the startup, the new material, the new idea is confronted with something very nasty: reality. And reality is different, it's dirty on the construction site. The only thing that helps is to constantly feed the experiences of reality back into the KVP process and into one's own business model. That's why we need more courage for new ideas in reality. Then we will make progress. And the Germans, in the overall planning and digital area, are unfortunately not as far as others. We try here and there in the startup world in the construction tech area, but I see too many people who, if you go back 120 years in the automotive industry, would be people who focus on optimizing the horse – a new saddle, a better rider – but the automobile is the holistic automated performance from planning to construction to operation. That's where the major business model changes and inefficiencies are to be seen.

Jörg, we have already heard from you, Knauf, a bit about where your journey is going regarding digital platforms that you want to connect to. Berthold said decathlete: you should specialize in the things you are good at. So Jörg, the question to you: in which areas are you already really good, and where do you say startups could perhaps help from the outside? I would like more impulses there.

So first of all, I think it's very important to know what digitalization is for. And as a company, two or three years ago, everyone was searching for the discussion in 2035. Why do I have to go searching when I have a functioning business model today that is also needed for the future and growth field? So where are we good? We believe we are really good at our business model, what we do today: we make drywall panels and insulation materials, and they are needed in the world, especially in a world that needs to become more sustainable. And if we now build digitalization around that, we have clearly set as a first step that we try to strengthen our core business and contribute to the business of Jan-Hendrik and the other colleagues, and not to look for some breakout solution. And what we can do well, how we can help construction companies – Knauf is known for understanding how a building can be built, how it can be built better, supporting in planning, product selection, and then, through proximity to the customer, ensuring the best possible service delivery. In the past, we did that through the proximity of our people; we are famous for that. And we want to shape that digitally in the future. We are putting all our strength into that, but also a bit of internationalization, which I also need as an experimental field.
Yes, internationalization plays a role because the ideas, the how-to, don't come from here. The real ideas that you can incorporate have to be imported. We have the West Coast, as was mentioned, and we actively use startup ideas because we don't have them in our industry. We are good gypsum cookers, but we are not people who build robots or who, at least not yet, make intelligent software solutions. We try to connect that. And I think the startup world fits the fragmented, SME-structured companies because we are not so incredibly sluggish. If we are convinced that a solution is cool, we can work with startups very quickly to come up with something that is economically beneficial for both sides. A nicer and more hopeful conclusion could not have been wished for at this point, especially given the startups here, and hopefully they will teach you that really good solutions can also come from Germany.

What really concerns me is the very unfavorable ratio between productivity increase rates in the construction industry compared to 1990 – marginal above that level today – in relation to resource consumption and, for example, the generation of global waste, over half of which is attributable to the construction industry. So how do you, Mr. Kampmeyer and Mr. Goldbeck, ensure in the future that in this pioneering position, this ratio compared to other industries is brought back into balance?

I think a very important point is necessity. Especially in the last 10 to 15 years, the years of digitalization in other industries, due to the scenario that life has sketched out, there was simply no necessity to do that in many areas of construction. Take our natural gas consumption: until four weeks ago, it was a cost factor for us, but was it decisive? This year, we will manage to reduce our gas consumption by 11 percent through the introduction of new technologies, on the highest cost positions we have. You can see how much is possible. I believe that the necessity arising from the productivity gap, the lack of skilled workers, the unbearable construction costs today – and we cannot endlessly pass that on to the organization slack and self-awareness – and we as suppliers and the construction companies are united. So there is now a constellation that will bring enough pressure on the system to bring about very rapid changes in the next one to two years.

I would underline that. It's a bit of a problem that since 2005, anyone who could spell 'construction' could somehow make money with construction. That is not a good long-term state for an industry. And then, at the end of the 2000s, sustainable development came in, the EBM? came a bit, and then it was a bit dead in the sense of certificates you had to have. Then, thanks to the movement around Fridays for Future and the general global awareness regarding climate, there was really a switch where at the decision-maker level, I can really see it in the DAX companies, in the large medium-sized companies – actually DAX is even better than the medium-sized ones, I have to say, but that can't be referenced for everyone. It went from a nice-to-have, permission-to-play to a must-have. Before, it was cool and nice if you were sustainable, then for a while around 2015 it was almost irrelevant, it was all about capacity, and then from 2018/19 it's like: you can do it now or not. That's why people have to change in that direction, and this pressure is extremely positive. At the same time, there are many more technological possibilities today. For example, VR existed 20 years ago, but it didn't matter; the technology wasn't ready. Today, you can do a lot with VR and augmented reality, completely normal in reality. That means it's now applicable: 3D reality capture, computational design, robotics on the construction site – all use cases that are now for the first time really moving from the necessary egghead academia into the real, hard construction site life, still cautiously, but certainly rapidly in the next five years. And one topic that is always important for us: you just have to shed the narrow-mindedness of the construction industry and say, other industries have done it, for example the automotive industry. A huge creativity momentum and productivity momentum was generated through the collaboration between OEMs and suppliers. We have made initial thoughts with Alex Kraus at Knauf on how we defined this wooden exterior wall element with Opitz. We have partnerships with Hugo and many others where we say, okay, this is our application situation, and we ask our suppliers: let's think together how we can further develop this in our interest. And these are topics – we were completely sequential: someone planned something next to someone else, then it was awarded in bits and pieces. That is simply a system error in the construction and planning process, and it will change because it has to change.
