About Francesco Balestrieri
Francesco Balestrieri, CEO of Alfasigma Spa, appeared in a June 2021 interview to discuss the launch of a new cosmetics brand called Aequium, which he co-founded. He stated that the brand is based on Mediterranean botanicals and a scientific approach developed with Italian researchers. Balestrieri said the brand’s philosophy is that “almost all problems of our skin and our body arise from a lack of equilibrium,” describing the human body as a machine that loses balance over time due to modern life. He explained that the brand’s products aim to restore this balance, for example by preparing the body to better absorb ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
Balestrieri also described the brand’s scientific committee, which he said he directs and includes dermatologists, oncologists, plastic surgeons, and nutritionists. He noted that the team conducted a systematic review of literature to determine how to combine ingredients for effectiveness. He mentioned that testing for the products included longer-term studies, such as measuring a 44% improvement in hydration after two months, and that results exceeded expectations.

What is the future of cosmetics, and how much more effective can a face cream be? We discuss this with Francesco Balestrieri, founder of a new brand based on Mediterranean botanicals and a scientific approach developed with Italian researchers, and with Nicola Balestrieri, here with us today—an oncologist, an alopathic physician, and a plastic surgeon. Welcome!

Thank you. Well, why launch a new cosmetics brand now? What was missing, and what was the spark that sparked this idea? Nicola came to me saying, how can we adequately answer a woman's question? Because ultimately the questions come from men and women alike: how do I take care of my skin the right way? That was the starting point we set for ourselves, partly because he is a doctor and partly because I spent twenty years in the pharmaceutical world. We said, we need to think in terms of health—so beauty as health—and we took as our starting point the concept of balance. Balance is, if you will, the key word that represents the state of skin health, beyond the concept of beauty as balance. From the beginning, our product line was developed in parallel: dermocosmetics and supplements designed to work together synergistically, to communicate with each other. Each product is designed to give its best individually, but there is a multiplier effect when they are used together.

May I also ask Doctor Balestrieri to tell us what women were asking for exactly?

Exactly—the women I see in my practice have this need to feel more than just beautiful. They want to feel well, and the reflection of their well-being shows in their skin. As a doctor, I've learned that the skin is an extremely complex organ—the largest organ of our body—with sensory and extremely articulated functions, interacting with the immune system, the gastrointestinal system. It is the only interface that exists between our inner self and the outside world. Almost all skin problems, and body problems in general, arise from a lack of balance. The human body is born as a machine that is generally perfect, in absolute equilibrium between inside and outside. Then, as we grow up and go through modern life, we gradually lose it. Depending on where the imbalance shifts, different problems arise. So our philosophy was to identify a whole series of mechanisms and substances that could help each individual find their balance again.

Actually, your philosophy includes what we might call a new concept of three dimensions. You like to talk about three sciences, right? Within this approach, there is the science of ingredient balance, the science of formulation, and the science of multiplication.
