Hi, welcome to Bose Keynotes. I'm John Paluccio from Bose Automotive, and today's discussion is about Vision—specifically the long-range vision for Bose Corporation and some of the exciting new ways Bose is representing itself with an epic refresh of our brand. I'm thrilled to be joined today by Bose's Chief Executive Officer Lila Snyder and our Chief Marketing Officer Jim Malika. Lila, Jim, thank you both so much for being here.

So Lila, we've heard from a number of our Automotive partners that one of the things they really like about Bose is that we continue to invest in categories and listening experiences that matter to end users and that put audio first. Can you tell us a little bit about where Bose is going from here and some of the categories where Bose wants to stake its claim as a world-class player?

Happy to. I am always glad to talk about the Bose long-range Vision. We've done a lot of work on it and really wanted to focus on what's great about Bose. The vision really has four components, all centered around the customer. We're really focused on how we create the best experiences for consumers, so we put them right at the center of the vision. First, not surprisingly, is innovation. We're a technology company, we've always been an innovation company, and that hasn't changed. We've focused our research on three core areas we call our technology franchises. The first is noise removal—before you can have any great audio experience, you want to remove unwanted noise, and Bose has been known for that for many years. We think there's tremendous upside and more research to be done there. The second is a great immersive, lifelike audio experience, just like the artist intended you to hear it, best presented on a low noise floor. So noise removal first, build great audio on top. The third franchise, which is newer and more nuanced, is about hearing what you want. There are many situations where there are sounds you do want to hear, you just don't want to hear all of them. Using machine learning and AI, how do we draw out the best sounds and take away the ones that are most irritating or distracting? The great thing about all three franchises is that they're applicable everywhere—headphones, Bluetooth speakers, or automotive.
That leads into the second component of our vision: a focus on consumer audio. Our OEM partners really depend on us for that. We've got laser focus on consumer audio in three spaces: the home, where we're creating a dynamic experience in your living environment; your car, where we want to make sure that's an absolutely stellar experience; and on the go—our term for any wearable product that takes you between the home, the car, and any other destination. Those three areas speak to our history but also our future, and we want to focus on having the best products in each of those consumer audio domains because that's what our OEM partners and consumers count on us for.
The third piece of the vision is partnerships. We've been in the partnership business for over 40 years with our Automotive OEM partners. But we think there's a lot of opportunity for a new form of partnership in two dimensions. One is partnering for technology we can bring into our products to make them better—being more open to other technology we can bring to the car, home, or on the go. The second is taking our great technology and putting it into other people's products. An early example is the hearing aid we partnered on with Lexie Hearing, where we've taken our technology and helped bring it to a hearing aid they're bringing to market. There are a couple of other keynote segments where we've talked about partnerships in automotive, both on the experience creation side and the delivery side, so definitely make sure you tune into those.

Jim Malika4:57
That's right. There's a lot of exciting partnerships going on within automotive and beyond, and I'm glad those are part of the segments that you're exposing everyone to.
L
Lila Snyder5:04
And then the final piece of the long-range vision is the brand. I'm going to let Jim talk about that, but really the brand is about re-embracing sound as our superpower at Bose—recognizing that is what is great and distinctive and special about us, and bringing that to the market in new and exciting ways that people haven't seen from Bose, or at least not for a very long time.
J
John Paluccio5:29
So Jim, maybe you could go a little deeper there. What are we doing with the Bose brand to make it resonate with end users—whether they're buying products for themselves or listening to Bose sound systems in their cars?
J
Jim Malika5:40
Happy to talk about this. One of the incredible elements of my job is it's a bit of a Back to the Future—we're taking the heritage and legacy around incredible sound experiences and re-articulating and refocusing it for all of the diverse listening occasions any consumer has, whether it's a movie night at home, on the go with headphones, or in the car. We have an entire company dedicated solely to these incredible transformative sound experiences. We don't treat it as an afterthought or a side hustle. We have thousands of employees who have dedicated their lives to music and coming up with these incredible immersive experiences. What's exciting is how we bring that to life at all these consumer touch points—whether it's on a website, in a store with resellers, in the car driving to work, watching a movie, or experiencing customer service. Every single touch point, we're infusing this thoughtful sound as a superpower, where the passionate music fan understands that these products were created by passionate music fans for their everyday experiences. We hope that DNA is woven through our new sponsorships—incredibly innovative, thoughtful artists and musicians like Charlie Puth, Tai Verdes, the Gorillaz—super innovative, incredible artists that help us show the emotion behind what we do.
J
John Paluccio7:48
It's really interesting listening to the way you guys describe this. We're taking products, features, experiences, and the brand, and wrapping it together into a holistic whole that's going to compel people for whom audio is the most important thing to choose Bose first. What I love about it is it's such an inclusive and diverse target—music lovers come in all varieties, they're all over the globe, every possible type of person you'll find people who love music.
J
Jim Malika8:26
It's certainly making it fun, and picking partnerships—because music is not just one thing, it's something different to each individual. Creating that emotional connection is really fun to watch.
J
John Paluccio8:38
So with a couple of minutes left, there's one area I'm hoping you can touch on. Obviously there would be use cases where someone buys Bose wearables or a Bose Bluetooth speaker and also has a Bose-equipped vehicle, because we have such a leadership position in both areas. I'm curious whether there are opportunities for collaboration between the Consumer Electronics part of Bose and the Automotive part of Bose to bring those experiences together for end users.
L
Lila Snyder9:06
Absolutely. This idea of Better Together—how do we make our products and experiences better when you put them together—is really central to our long-range vision. It's probably a place we haven't focused on as much in the past, but we're really starting to look at it today. One of the things driving that is how ubiquitous wearables are. For every family car, there's a wearable on every person. The idea of that wearable stuck in your ear isn't helpful in an automotive context because of safety, but when you can transition to an open-ear environment—we've been investing for years in open-ear audio technology and it's really starting to come to market now—it opens up a lot of possibilities. You could use near-field audio to augment the installed audio system that's already tremendous, completely transforming that experience. It could be around safety and navigation prompts which only the driver needs to hear. It could be about making your life more seamless as you transition from on the go to in your car and back. We think there are a lot of really exciting possibilities here, and we're only starting to scratch the surface. That goes back to the technology franchises—the ability to hear what you want, immersive audio, removal of noise. We can do that in different ways involving wearables or cars or some combination.
J
John Paluccio11:21
That's terrific. It's obvious we've just scratched the surface about all the amazing work going on at Bose in terms of brand transformation, new products, and new experiences, as you've just articulated this really compelling vision for the future. So Jim, Lila, anything you'd like to leave us with today?
J
Jim Malika11:37
I'd just like to add that music is a deep passion point for many people. It's very personal and can create incredibly compelling emotional experiences. For us, we take that very seriously—we create incredible indelible memories for people by creating these listening occasions and listening moments. I think it's really exciting as we continue to hone in on innovation and delivering these exceptional transformational experiences. It's a great time to partner with us to help create venues for these moments to occur.
J
John Paluccio12:20
Great, definitely a palpable sense of excitement around here. Lila, anything you'd like to leave us with?
L
Lila Snyder12:23
Jim summarized it well. It's an exciting time to be at Bose, and I think an exciting time to partner with Bose.
J
John Paluccio12:29
All right, well Lila, Jim, thank you both very much for being here today. Thank all of you for watching. I'm John Paluccio, and we'll see you next time on Bose Keynotes. Thank you.
