The global pharmaceutical industry is a sector experiencing strong growth, but this growth raises a question about the adoption of ethical practices in product development and in rethinking the relationship with patients.
The health crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of traditional business models and has projected sustainability among the priorities of the international political agenda.
In the post-COVID era, sustainable development models that take into account social inclusion and environmental sustainability as crucial elements will be the only viable path.
We, like others, believe we must start with patients to develop complete, functional care solutions for the patient as a human being.
Putting patients at the center is not a slogan. It means finding new ways that allow the entire research and development process to be driven by patients' physical, psychological, and practical needs.
It means adopting their point of view, understanding their needs, and collecting their feedback to obtain effective therapeutic solutions.
Ultimately, it means revolutionizing the traditional model.
A different attention to the patient cannot, however, be divorced from an equally great attention to the environmental impact, both during the industrial production phase of the drug and after its use by the population.
The patient must not be forced to choose between their own health and respect for the environment. It is the pharmaceutical industry that must provide therapeutic solutions that are effective and at the same time environmentally sustainable.
This is also because the health of the planet depends on the health of all of us.
Consistent with our nature as a benefit company, as one of the largest international pharmaceutical groups certified B Corp, Chiesi has publicly committed, through the Action Net Zero campaign, to achieving total carbon neutrality by 2035, well before the 2050 deadline set by the Paris Agreement.
This commitment first involved the creation of an inventory of direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions, and subsequently the adoption of specific strategies to reduce such emissions, including reducing energy consumption, using energy from renewable sources, electrifying the vehicle fleet, reducing air travel, and in general eliminating the use of fossil fuels.
Through an investment of 350 million euros and an intense research, development, and reindustrialization effort, we also aim to make available to asthmatic and bronchitic patients by the end of 2025 an inhaler with a lower carbon footprint.
We are also working on a sustainable and future-proof research and development process in which environmental sustainability is integrated from the design stage of new therapies, through a life cycle perspective approach.
If I think about the healthcare system, a key aspect will be finding a balance between the need to incentivize research into future innovative treatments and the need to guarantee therapies that are accessible, also economically, to healthcare systems and critically to patients and their families.
The third of the Sustainable Development Goals — good health and well-being for all at all ages — commits UN member states to try to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. This includes the full spectrum of essential and quality health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, to palliative care throughout an individual's entire life.
Coming to the education system, as a consequence of technological advancement and artificial intelligence, today we don't know what the professions will be in five or ten years. For this reason, I believe that the scientific method, a technological foundation, a human dimension, and an international footprint are the foundation of a winning educational approach in the schools of the present and the future.
