About Challa Setty

Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, Chairman of the State Bank of India, has been active in several public engagements in mid-2026. On July 21, he commented on the listing of SBI Funds Management, calling it the largest IPO of 2026. He stated that the bank's focus remains on core deposit mobilization and lending, and that SBI would continue to sell its own subsidiary products rather than competing products. At the TransUnion CIBIL Credit Conference on July 13, Setty delivered a special address on credit and resilience, arguing that financial systems falter when resilience fails to keep pace with ambition and that buffers must be built before they are required. He identified four pillars for resilient growth: strong capitalization, forward-looking risk management, data-driven early warning systems, and balanced credit portfolios. In June, Setty spoke at the Citi India Conference 2026, where he discussed India's growth story and the role of banking in achieving the Vision 2047 goals. He said that India may require incremental investments of nearly 200 trillion rupees by 2030 and another 400 to 450 trillion rupees by FY35 across infrastructure, manufacturing, energy transition, and other sectors. He described the banking sector as central to this transformation, acting as mobilizers of savings, enablers of entrepreneurship, and allocators of capital. Regarding the YONO app, Setty noted that it had crossed 4.5 crore active users and that the bank was considering commercializing elements of the platform for other banks. On the RBI's monetary policy, he stated that the house view expected a pause, and he expressed concern that inflationary expectations could moderate consumption, which he described as a key driver of the domestic economy.

Are you also somewhere happy and relieved that I did not start like most journalists — we start with, you know, now it's been about 5 months of YONO being launched, are you relieved not to take questions on, you know, any longer, and more from when is the timeline, when is this happening, etc.? And what is the initial feedback that you have received from customers, because you have also gone very wide on the offerings through the app?
C
Challa Setty0:37
Yeah. Of course, the question 'when are we launching' is off the table now that we have launched. But I still would like to talk about it, because YONO is not a simple mobile application. A lot of analysts ask me what is so great about it — you know, everybody has got a mobile application.
I
Interviewer0:54
Actually, try it to feel it. It surprised me, the app.
C

So apart from the customer feeling happy about the interface, more importantly, the scale at which we built this. In 100 days of YONO 2.0 — and YONO 2.0 is not a repurposed 1.0, as I keep saying, it's a new app which we built from scratch. It is not only the app we built; our net banking, our branch portal — all built afresh. And this mobile application we launched in December.
I
Interviewer1:35
December last year.
C
Challa Setty1:35
We are less than 6 months and we are going to reach 5 crore active users as we speak. We just crossed 4.5 crore yesterday, and hopefully in this quarter itself we will be reaching 5 crore.
I
Interviewer1:48
Among private players — I mean among the banking players there?
C
Challa Setty1:51
Yeah, we always have been. I think what we have focused on now is not merely registration — focus on usage. And the number of customers who log in on a payday, for instance, is as high as two crores. I don't think any financial service application attracts that kind of traffic. And we built for stability, resilience, and availability — 99.9% availability of the app. These are all things which we are proud of. And this is a digital property which can create value for the customer and value for the bank, not only in terms of transaction ease. I think it would eventually reduce cost to serve.
I
Interviewer2:38
Of course.
C
Challa Setty2:38
And more importantly, the ability to generate income. We brought almost all the subsidiary products onto YONO. The advantage of that is it's do-it-yourself. You know the product — nobody can accuse us of any mis-selling. You are looking at the product, and if you like it, you're availing that. And we want as many products to come in here on a self-service mode.
I
Interviewer3:07
That's interesting. Has it also, in your opinion, reached a size where you can — I mean, one of your predecessors talked about if we were to go to market with YONO, it would be a $4 billion proposition for SBI. Have you reached a scale where you can think of taking it to the market from an IPO perspective, or from let's say a monetization perspective?
C
Challa Setty3:30
So, what would eventually happen, if not now? It was very forward-thinking of my predecessor to talk about this. But we also realized that YONO is an integral part of SBI. However, I realized that there are quite a few elements which can be made commercially viable for others. That's number one. I think we will soon start thinking in terms of 3.0, which would have elements — with our own experience — that we can commercialize and give to other banks. They don't have to rebuild from scratch. So how do you make them available, if not the whole app? That's one. And eventually, I think this is meant to be a digital bank. So, a bank within a bank — a bank in a box, or bank in a mobile, whatever you call it. I think that is more powerful than the monetization which we talk about. We need a very powerful digital interface for a bank like ours, where every day you acquire 65,000–70,000 customers. And the customer base is enlarging every year. You need a powerful digital interface. I think that is the main purpose — beyond the monetization which we keep talking about. That is monetization in itself.
I
Interviewer5:00
In itself.
