Am 3. Juli 2022 wurde der steirische Unternehmer Dr. Ing. h.c. Dipl. Ing. Helmut List (AVL List GmbH) von Landeshauptmann Hermann Schützenhöfer mit dem Ehrenring des Landes Steiermark. Diese Ehrung mit der höchsten Auszeichnung des Landes Steiermark war einerseits Schützenhöfers letzte Amtshandlung vor seinem Rücktritt als Landeshauptmann und andererseits eine Würdigung für das Lebenswerk von Helmut List.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have the honorable task today of officially expressing gratitude to a personality who has earned special merits for Styria. This gratitude is deliberately expressed at a ceremony here in the Aula of the Old University, which offers a traditional framework for important events. This hall has served as a meeting place for major political and social events. I warmly welcome today's honoree, Helmut List, with his wife and family, as well as dignitaries including former Landeshauptmann Waltraud Klasnic and representatives from chambers, churches, and universities. The personality being honored, Helmut List, is well-known, but tradition calls for a brief laudatio. He began his career in 1966 at the company founded by his father and took over management in 1979, leading AVL to global success in diesel engine technology and research. His early international experience and scientific understanding drove innovation in electromobility and software. AVL also promotes art and culture, fostering dialogue between technology and creativity. The Helmut List Hall is a venue for concerts and interdisciplinary projects. Helmut List is a bearer of many honors, and today's award is significant. As I conclude my political career tomorrow, I emphasize the importance of research for the future and thank Helmut List for his contributions to Styria's innovation and economy. I am pleased to present the Ehrenring of the State, the highest award, together with other officials.

Honorable Mr. Landeshauptmann, ladies and gentlemen, I thank you very much for this high award. The Ehrenring of the State of Styria means a great deal to me. I thank Styria for the healthy and stimulating environment that allowed me to grow, which is a gift worldwide. The special intellectual and scientific climate, with five universities and research institutions, is a key advantage for entrepreneurs. AVL today has 10,700 employees globally, headquartered in Graz, and delivers sustainable mobility solutions through development projects and software innovations. We started electrification early, with our first hybrid in 1995 and electric car in 2009. An attractive location is crucial for qualified employees, and the international school in Graz has been vital for families. The strong network between science, politics, and business in Styria is decisive for success, and I thank the Landeshauptmann and his team for supporting this innovation ecosystem. The connection between science and economy is a unique location factor. I am grateful for the award and look forward to continued cooperation for the community's goals.
