Happy weeks, welcome to 'Agenda: Ready-to-Wear.' We are here to discuss the flagship of Turkish exports, the ready-to-wear and apparel sector. Last week, successful exporters were awarded at a ceremony. Today, we will ask: can the sector maintain its export momentum? With us is İstanbul Ready-to-Wear and Apparel Exporters' Association President Hikmet Tanrıverdi — welcome, Chairman. And Eroğlu Holding Board Chairman Nurettin Eroğlu — welcome, Mr. Eroğlu. Let's start with the hot topic, the awards ceremony. You awarded nearly 2,050 exporters. What were the criteria? And when I look at ready-to-wear and apparel, after jewelry and defense, it's one of Turkey's top three high-value export sectors.
H
Hikmet Tanrıverdi1:05
Thank you. At the recent awards ceremony, we awarded approximately 2,050 companies. Of these, 150 received their awards on stage, and we presented the others in their workplaces. How did we evaluate them? We have 47 companies exporting over $50 million; they received platinum awards. We have 83 companies exporting between $25-50 million; they received gold awards. In other categories, we gave silver for $10-25 million, bronze for $2.5-10 million, and achievement awards for exports above $500,000. It was a gathering of about 1,000 people. We had the opportunity to discuss sector issues together and held our ceremony. These awards have special importance; people work hard all year. When they see that their work is valued, it brings them great joy. In every company I visit, not just in our sector, the owner's office always proudly displays these plaques. They are a source of pride and enhance the company's reputation. Despite all the negativity, the apparel sector had a good year, and our firms were very happy at the ceremony. In fact, over the last three months, the apparel sector is growing faster than other export sectors. Our figures are trending upward. The awards are also important because they reflect years of experience and the year's achievements.

You are one of Turkey's most successful figures in ready-to-wear and apparel, Mr. Nurettin Eroğlu. If we look at the Turkish apparel sector's export journey over the past 10 years, where have we come from and where are we now?
N
Nurettin Eroğlu3:49
Thank you. Before getting into that, I want to emphasize the importance of the awards. Receiving such an award, gathering the sector together, creates a competition and motivation. It makes people think, 'We were here this year; next year, let's surpass that.' Without competition, even awards create a kind of competition. You say, 'We were third; how can we become first?' It makes you more disciplined. I thank our Chairman for that. The ready-to-wear sector has a very serious history in Turkey, about 50 years, but it gained significant momentum in the last 30 years. It is Turkey's number one export sector. Although the automotive sector appears to be first, I'm not saying that to diminish it, but every product in ready-to-wear is produced and exported from Turkey, while automotive has more assembly. In terms of employment and spreading across Turkey, it has a huge advantage, and its domestic input ratio is very high. Looking at the years, production was once more concentrated in the Marmara region. Between the early 2000s and 2008, we were significantly affected by exchange rates. Seizing that opportunity, we moved production to Anatolia. For example, our factory was in Çorlu and Avcılar. Now we can't produce in Avcılar at all. I say this to emphasize that the sector is moving in the right direction. We had a factory in Çorlu, and without downsizing it, we made a major investment in our hometown Aksaray, where we currently employ 1,500 and will reach 2,500. Other players did the same; some went to Şanlıurfa, some to Malatya, spreading across Anatolia and increasing employment there. The sector brings in foreign currency, and there is a serious population in Anatolia waiting for jobs. The biggest advantage of ready-to-wear is that it is labor-intensive and provides substantial employment to people in Anatolia. In Aksaray, we have 1,500 employees. When you add services like transportation and meals, you create significant added value. This will develop further in the coming years; production will spread from Marmara to Anatolia. We have serious projects. For example, Aksaray is right in the middle of Turkey. From there, we coordinate logistics, cutting, and operations, and we are expanding eastward with our workshop partners. Additionally, ready-to-wear has another added value for Turkey. Besides producing for international brands, we now have our own brands. We are an important group in that regard. We currently have three brands: Colins, L, and our new brand Max. There are others like us. We are both producers and brand owners, representing our brands abroad with our own stores.

I want to ask you about the international environment. You are present in many countries with these brands. What are the benefits for the ready-to-wear sector?
N
Nurettin Eroğlu8:01
There is no such thing anymore where we just wait for orders. Large brands come with their styles, and we prepare collections. They place orders based on our collections, shaping them to their brand identity. You end up following global fashion trends because you are designing for your own brands. This chicken-and-egg cycle is actually a win-win formula. Doesn't this also show the level Turkish design has reached?
H
Hikmet Tanrıverdi8:55
Absolutely, Mr. Chairman. How many designers do we employ now? We have nearly 400 designers. Design is the key to added value in exports. In recent years, we have constantly worked on design and held many related organizations. The results are visible; design is the future. If you don't have design value, you cannot compete with cheap production anymore. We have Far East today, Africa tomorrow, and some other place later. We can't compete on low cost. We must add value through design and sell our designed products. When you do that, you can command the price you want. Today, we went from $3 per kilo in exports to $24 per kilo. But we need to reach $55-60 per kilo, which is where Italy is. That is our goal, and we will achieve it through design, value-added products, and our brands.

Mr. Eroğlu mentioned earlier that our brands will grow abroad or acquire other brands. We will export all branded products from Turkey to the world. Today, we are present in 211 countries with 'Made in Turkey' products. This must continue to grow. Some markets have small volumes; we need to expand them. How will we do that? Through our brands. We sell a t-shirt for $3.5-4.5. With added value, it reaches $7-10. But when we sell it as a brand, we can send it at $30 and sell it for $90 there. That is the power of branding, and our sector has it. Brands like Colins and others have started serious international store openings. We must also acknowledge the support from our Ministry of Economy. Next year, we are launching a major promotional campaign. First in Germany, then other countries. The slogan is 'Discover the Label.' We will promote it in top German media and organize large events, possibly with the participation of our President or Prime Minister and the German Chancellor. This is to raise the perception of the Turkish brand. The country's perception also needs to grow. Our sector will drive both. When you look at international brands, even consumers check the label. Turkish products sell for more; people pay more because they believe they are higher quality and reliable, from non-carcinogenic to durability. This affects Turkey's perception. Even on products sold for $5,000, you see 'Made in Turkey.' People associate Turkey with quality. We need to combine this with design and increase interest in Turkish brands. We must support our brands to spread faster globally. The government is already providing serious support. Our future is there. We plan to take our brands to many countries via Turkish Trade Centers. Every new store abroad increases our exports by at least $1 million. As the number of stores grows, these figures will accelerate even faster.
We've gotten hints of your work. 'Discover the Label' will be your promotional brand for the upcoming period. Mr. Eroğlu, you are involved in many export markets. I want to ask about the Russian market, the current state of affairs, and other markets where Turks can be successful this year.
N
Nurettin Eroğlu14:36
Let's divide this in two. As Turkey, we produce for high-value brands. The foreign brands in Turkey are mostly buyers. To strengthen this, we are moving to Anatolia to reduce unemployment and lower costs. The government is providing serious support. This is a clear sign of the sector's current and future growth. Our move to Anatolia is providing major added value to address unemployment there. Second, we already do this and produce for global brands. And with our own names and brands, we are present in all countries. As you said, we have 26 own stores in Russia and 100 in Ukraine. Currently, about 30% of our KİS and Max stores are outside Turkey. We have nearly 1,000 stores. How is the trade process going? Any problems? Of course, there were political issues stemming from Syria, but trade relations continue despite some tension. However, in the last three months, there have been no issues. We can send our goods and sell them. I don't think it's right to mix trade and politics. Our government is following a proper policy. The Russians were disturbed by the downing of their plane and mixed politics with trade, creating some anger, but it's calming down. We have no serious problems now; we can send our products freely. I believe the tension stemmed from external dynamics, not internal ones. Turkey needs Russia, and Russia needs Turkey. We have neighborly relations, and I am confident it will improve.

Very briefly, I want to ask about your branding plans in the current conjuncture.
N
Nurettin Eroğlu17:08
Now, I am saying something very important. Just as 20-30 years ago we were compared with other countries in ready-to-wear, now those countries don't even produce anymore. We produce and supply to world brands. In the next 20 years, our brands will be prominent in ready-to-wear. Even opening a brand in Europe, paying for central offices and rents, is costly, as we know from Max in Holland. As Turkey, we are now a fashion center creating brands, and the government is seriously supporting this. I believe in the next 20 years we will have very important global brands, and we are at the forefront of this branding process. The contribution to ready-to-wear will be: with both production and branding together, things become easier. When an American or European brand looks at price, if it's not suitable, they can easily go to another country. But with your own brand and production, you have a great advantage. This creates good synergy.
H
Hikmet Tanrıverdi18:23
What are the sector's year-end targets? Let me give the figures. We closed last year at $17 billion. The previous year was $18.7 billion; there was a significant decline due to parity. Excluding parity, there was actually a slight increase of about 1%. This year, with parity normalizing and the market reviving, and Turkey becoming more attractive, I estimate there will be an increase again in single digits. We will likely exceed the previous year's exports, expecting above $18 billion. What Mr. Eroğlu said earlier is very important. We have been saying this for about 8 years: Istanbul will be a fashion center, brands will emerge in Turkey, and we must export branded products. Anatolia will become a production hub. We had this project from the beginning, and it is slowly materializing. In the coming period, it will accelerate, and we are very hopeful. Turkey's incentives and support in 6 regions are very serious, reducing costs. If used well, the sector can grow much faster, especially considering unemployment in those regions. I think it will move to very significant levels for both the country and the sector. Of course, this also depends on Turkey's political conjuncture and geopolitics. Once the conflicts in those regions end, this sector will have the greatest impact on their development. For example, it is very difficult for women to participate in the labor force outside of ready-to-wear; otherwise, they have no chance. In that sense, ready-to-wear has a social responsibility component. We have supported projects in Syrian refugee camps, setting up ready-to-wear workshops and providing training. Some were funded by international funds, others by us. On May 15th, we will open a small training workshop in Diyarbakır with the Ministry of Family, where women can work. When the sector's potential is unlocked and the turmoil in these regions calms down, I believe Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Anatolia will become major production centers, especially for sustainable female employment. Such projects and training centers are very valuable because teaching someone to fish is more meaningful than giving them a fish. It opens job doors for both local women and Syrian refugee women.
