Museo di Arese. Here beats the heart of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. Here we have the new 33 Stradale, which brings back a myth, a gift for all Alfa Romeo fans, but also a bold, strong, dynamic, aesthetically effective, fun, and above all beautiful project. We'll talk about it with Jean-Philippe Imparato, and the first question we'll ask him, the CEO of Alfa Romeo, is how difficult was it to decide and make a project like this real, from paper, from the idea? To convince the whole company, but also to succeed in realizing it in this way.

Well, it was difficult to decide first the car, the reference point, because when you see the museum for the first time you see many things, many beauties. So, visiting the museum on July 5, 2021 with the team, at one point we said to ourselves, 'Guys, we cannot leave Alfa Romeo one day without having brought to market, alongside the 8C, a proposal that is consistent with the past.' And then naturally we said, 'But the 33 Stradale brings Italian value, sportiness, red, and the history of Romeo and innovation.' So we immediately said '33' and we also said, 'OK, but we must prepare the future, and this car must prepare the future in terms of engines, electrification, and also design codes for the new cars that are coming.'

So, an important aspect: this is certainly a tribute to history, almost a gesture owed to Alfa Romeo's history that shows it is reborn, reborn strongly, reborn decisively with products worthy of its great history. But it is also a challenge, because deciding to use that name is very challenging, and so there was also a bit of fear in deciding to undertake such an ambitious project.

At the beginning, yes, because I didn't go public. What a figure I would have cut by going public to say, 'Oh, I have to make a 33 Stradale, they'll kill me, no?' So at first what did we do? I said, 'Guys, we want to do this, but do we have the customers with us?' The answer was, 'Let's see.' Then we went to Monza last year, a year ago, and we said, 'We selected three or four Alfa Romeo fans, what do you think?' Over the weekend we got three orders. Seven weeks later, we immediately sold 30, and now we have 50 on the waiting list. But at the beginning I couldn't say it, because I was afraid, to be clear, of having a very negative response. But when I see today the consistency between the original 33, the proposal we are making now, and the reaction of the customers who worked with us, well, we can say that something is turning positively.

So you had to do it without saying you were doing it.
J
Jean-Philippe Imparato3:07
Absolutely.
I

Now it's early September 2023, the car will be delivered at the end of 2024, the first ones, and you sold them in about three weeks, right?
J
Jean-Philippe Imparato3:18
Seven weeks.

Seven weeks in September 2022, so more than a year ago, the car didn't exist, there was a sheet of paper. Can we say that potentially there could have been 300-500 buyers and you chose yours because they were Alfa Romeo enthusiasts first, rather than, I don't know, other supercar brands, and that they were more than collectors, true enthusiasts, and not speculators?
J
Jean-Philippe Imparato3:42
This is clear. The selection was made based on passion, respect for history, and also mindset. I don't want speculators, I'm not interested. But I never forget that many customers and Alfisti have supported the brand over the years, and I owed these people something in return. And imagine, since 1967, this is the first time Alfa Romeo has signed the car with the customer's name. And 33 cars are unique, there won't be two alike. So a tribute to history, a tribute also to enthusiasts, to those who supported the brand. Can we say that from here there is a sort of acceleration of the Alfa Romeo brand for the future? We saw a beautiful Giulia and Stelvio, we saw the Tonale, and we can say that what you anticipated for 2024 will be, let's say, a further step towards both consistency and the strength of the brand. One launch per year: simply, every year a new car arrives. I can't answer differently, I don't do two, I don't do three, I don't do one. Every year we do a launch, and we start in 2024. We'll talk about it in a few months, and by the way, we'll talk about the name of the new car in December 2023, and we'll present the car at the beginning of 2024. We expect a lot from Alfa Romeo: one car per year, we will maintain history, sportiness, and DNA also for the future.
