What Wendell Weeks said

Wendell Weeks, Chairman and CEO of Corning, discussed the company's role in AI-driven data centers, emphasizing that generative AI's neural network of 150,000 GPUs cannot be supported by copper, making fiber optics superior in cost, power, and latency. He described Corning's reinvention starting in 2018, redesigning fiber, cable, and connectivity to fit four times more fiber in the same space, and reimagining supply chains for hyperscalers. Weeks highlighted Corning's R&D investment at twice the level of peers and a risk-sharing model where customers commit to volume in exchange for low-cost, high-performance products. He also spoke about glass's unique properties, liquid at the atomic level but solid mechanically, and its potential for extreme transparency, citing an example of seeing the bottom of the Indian Ocean if filled with glass. Weeks reflected on his 40-year career with the material and collaboration with visionary colleagues.

Key takeaways

  1. Generative AI's 150,000-GPU neural network requires fiber optics over copper for cost, power, and latency.
  2. Corning reinvented fiber, cable, and connectivity starting in 2018 to fit four times more fiber in the same space.
  3. Corning invests twice as much in R&D as peers and shares risk with customers through volume commitments.
  4. Glass is liquid at the atomic level but solid mechanically, enabling extreme transparency and formability.
  5. Weeks has spent 40 years working on glass with colleagues who believe they can change the world.

Hello and welcome to the Baron Streetwise podcast. I'm Jack How. Today we're going to be talking about the top CEOs issue. I'll be speaking with my colleague Andrew Barry about some of the names on the list, and later we'll hear from Wendell Weeks at Corning.
Andrew Barry, as I live and breathe. How are you, my friend? Good to see you.
Andrew Barry 0:33 ↗
Good to be here with you, Jack.
Jack How 0:34 ↗
Ready to talk CEOs.
Andrew Barry 0:36 ↗
Yep.
Jack How 0:36 ↗
We have Barron's all-star Andrew Barry to help run us down the list. We do this each year—25 names, a screening process for operational excellence, then nominations and debate. How would you describe the process?
Andrew Barry 1:05 ↗
Collegial mostly. There were notable disagreements, but we came up with a good list.
Jack How 1:09 ↗
We got past it. We're not going through all 25—people can see the issue. Let's do a few each. Start us off with a CEO you wrote about.
Andrew Barry 1:36 ↗
Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan Chase, one of the unquestioned top CEOs. He's been at it 20 years, embodies commitment, sharpness, and industry statesmanship. JP Morgan's stock has returned over 150% in three years, almost double the S&P 500. He's weaving AI through operations and capturing a capital markets recovery.
Jack How 3:01 ↗
I'll highlight Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Hock Tan of Broadcom. Broadcom is one of the largest S&P 500 companies. Hock Tan has run it for decades, buying companies, raising prices, and delivering great returns. Now their ASIC chips are perfect for hyperscalers. Nvidia has returned 68,000% over 20 years; Broadcom 32,000%.
Let's talk about the Knicks and James Dolan. He's CEO of MSG Sports, MSG Entertainment, and Sphere Entertainment. The Sphere in Vegas has been a massive success.
Andrew Barry 5:27 ↗
James Dolan's star is rising. The Sphere has tripled in stock, become very profitable, and they're planning new ones. The Wizard of Oz show there sold nearly $400 million in tickets. He took a big risk and it paid off.
Jack How 7:44 ↗
He was handsy with the Knicks roster in the past, but now he's hands-off and people like that.
Andrew Barry 7:52 ↗
He's taken a hands-off approach and it's clicked. This year his companies have delivered for shareholders: MSG Sports nearly doubled, MSG Entertainment doubled, Sphere up three or four fold.
Jack How 8:37 ↗
All three beating the market—Brunson level scoring.
Andrew Barry 8:43 ↗
Exactly.
Jack How 8:47 ↗
Dave Ricks of Eli Lilly makes the list. He went on a manufacturing Marshall plan, building 11 plants with space equal to 300 football fields. Lilly has the best-in-class obesity drug and another in development. He's set the company up well for AI-driven drug research.
Andrew Barry 10:43 ↗
I second that. They're the leader in GLP-1 drugs and injectables. He focuses on research, not mega mergers, and it's paid off. Give us another CEO.
Jack How 11:15 ↗
Evan Greenberg of Chubb. He engineered the merger of ACE and Chubb, making it the best-run P&C insurer. He's intense, in his early 70s, and wants to keep running it. Berkshire Hathaway is the biggest shareholder—a nice endorsement.
You can't get away from AI. Chubb is using machine learning for underwriting and winning business from data centers that need insurance.
Andrew Barry 13:11 ↗
Chubb's returns are defensive, matching the S&P 500 over three years. That's good for a defensive stock.
Jack How 13:50 ↗
Yeah, when the market declines, Chubb often rallies.
We'll hear from Wendell Weeks of Corning soon. Corning has been in glass for 175 years—light bulbs, Corningware, optical fiber, smartphone screens. Wendell took over after the dot bust. He learned to keep researching and partner with customers. Right now it's all about optical fiber for data centers. They've designed a new cable that increases density and is phenomenally successful.
Andrew Barry 16:08 ↗
It trades at 50 times earnings, 426% over three years. This list isn't about stock picking; it's about great CEOs. Our lists have beaten the market over three years.
Jack How 17:28 ↗
Any summer plans, Andrew?
Andrew Barry 17:57 ↗
Hamptons? I'll be with the squirrels in Westchester.
