Shailesh Chandra, MD & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, discussed the launch of the new-generation Tiago EV at a price matching petrol (₹4.69 lakh), emphasizing a lifetime warranty, 40% faster charging, and 100 km range in 18 minutes. He explained that the hatch segment was neglected, and updates drove Tiago sales up 20% in FY26 despite a 3% market decline. Chandra addressed production challenges, noting factories are at near 100% utilization and supplier capacity may take 3-4 months to expand. He outlined export plans to enter 4-5 new countries in 3-4 years. On fuels, he downplayed hybrids, citing 2.5% demand versus 5-6% for EVs, and prioritized CNG and electric as transition technologies. He confirmed flex fuel readiness with a first car in 2027, and discussed market outlook, noting strong demand but rising fuel price headwinds.
Key takeaways
Tiago EV launched at ₹4.69 lakh, same as petrol, with lifetime warranty and 40% faster charging.
EV demand penetration is 5-6%, expected to reach 7-8% by end of year if supply allows.
Hybrid demand is only 2.5%, so Tata sees limited role and won't proactively push hybrids.
First flex fuel vehicle will launch in 2027, with technology ready and discussions ongoing.
Tata plans to enter 4-5 new countries in next 3-4 years for both ICE and EV.
Four years ago, we launched the Tiago EV for the first time. But now it has come at a much more aggressive price, and it also has all the modern features. But the most important thing given in it is peace of mind: a lifetime warranty. It can charge 40% faster. You can top up 100 km in 18 minutes.
Flex fuel addresses a national imperative: energy security. Discussions are ongoing. We are ready with the technology. Our first car will come in 2027. Hybrid is a fraction of electrification. Our thinking is that there is an existing technology and a destination technology. I see a limited role for hybrid. Rather, I see a bigger role for CNG and electric as transition technologies. If people want to move from petrol, they should move towards the destination technology. Whenever we talk about Tata Motors, the country comes first and value comes second. Customers have always been very worried about rising petrol prices: whether to take petrol, hybrid, or electric, and how to understand the price difference. But as I said, when it comes to Tata Motors, something new comes and the country comes first. Both EV and petrol are now at the same price. Let's talk about the Tiago EV, which has come in its new avatar.
Shailesh Chandra ji is with us now. First of all, congratulations. It's been a very pleasant surprise for us on a holiday, right? 4.69 petrol, 4.69 EV. How did you achieve this? And today, the three big problems that were there regarding EV, I think you have also addressed them with this. Tell us more about the new launches and the strategy behind it.
Look, for many years we were seeing that the hatch segment was quite neglected in terms of updates. So if someone wanted to buy a hatch but wasn't getting modern updates, they would probably buy an SUV. So we were losing a hatch customer due to lack of updates. So updates in this segment were very necessary. We had given a small refresh to the Tiago in 2025 as well. In FY26, the hatch market fell by 3%, but Tiago increased by 20%. That shows that if you give updates, people come back. So for the new generation Tiago, we kept in mind that the modern experience we are bringing in SUVs or expensive cars should also be put into the hatch. So what are those modern experiences? First, its design and styling, which should change with trends. It is bolder, more assertive, more upright. Modern lighting elements. Experience the dashboard or seat fabrics. Rear AC vents. New technologies like 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring, wireless charger. We have filled it with technology, comfort, and convenience. And the biggest thing that doesn't happen elsewhere in Tata Motors' case is safety and affordability. Safety has to be democratized. This was already the safest car. We made it even safer with six airbags, electronic stability program, and many active safety features. So with a mix of modern experiences and higher safety, the new generation Tiago EV has been brought. Along with this, we are giving three powertrains: petrol, CNG, and electric. In electric, there is a very significant change. We launched the Tiago EV four years ago, but now it has come at an even more aggressive price with all modern features. The most important thing is peace of mind: a lifetime warranty. In this segment, people would think it's impossible to give because the battery is small, but we can give it because charging cycles are fewer. Our customers have driven 2 billion kilometers on the Tiago EV. 75,000 customers. Based on that knowledge and confidence, we have given a lifetime warranty, which is the most path-breaking thing in this segment. And we have also given fast charging: 40% faster, 100 km in 18 minutes. So it has become a very compelling proposition. At a time when the inclination towards electric vehicles has increased rapidly in the last two months. Our bookings before February were two to two and a half times higher. We are not able to supply. So we used to talk about demand problem. Now there is a massive supply challenge for electric vehicles. So I think this is the right time to democratize electric vehicles, and we have brought this.
