Beth Wozniak, chair and CEO of nVent Electric, was inducted into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame in 2026. And I'm so excited to gather here with you today for what is sure to be an informative, educational, and inspiring hour to close our 2025-2026 season of First Tuesday. Beth Wozniak is the chair and chief executive officer of nVent, a $3.9 billion global electrical manufacturing company that connects and protects mission-critical infrastructure. With more than 12,000 employees worldwide, nVent is focused on building a more sustainable and electrified world. In 2023, Wozniak was honored by Twin Cities Business as its person of the year. In 2024, Wozniak was named a regional entrepreneur of the year, 2024 Heartland Award winner by Ernst and Young LLP, EYUS. And in 2026, Twin Cities Business inducted Wozniak into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame. Prior to leading nVent in its spin from Pentair PLC in 2018, Wozniak was the president of Pentair PLC's electrical business unit. And before that, she served as president of Pentair's flow and filtration solutions business unit. Prior to joining Pentair in 2015, Wozniak had a 25-year career at Honeywell, including holding several executive leadership positions, including president of the environmental and combustion controls business and president of the sensing and control business. Through her career at Honeywell, she held various executive positions in both the automation and control and aerospace business units. Wozniak has served as chair of the board of governors of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association since 2024. She held the office of vice chair from 2022 to 2024. She has served as a director of Parker Hannifin Corporation, a global leader in motion and control technologies since 2025 and she previously served as director of Carrier Global Corporation from 2021 to 2024. Wozniak holds a bachelor of engineering degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and an MBA from York University in Toronto.

Well, this is really cool. So, nVent is really part of this electrification and everything. It is going on. Yes. You're talking about 25 years, 50% growth. So, and there was one person described nVent as the pick and shovel of the electrification. So, elaborate a little bit on that because the video gave us a nice little overview of electrification.

Yeah. So, maybe just to back up, right? We're eight years old now, and I like to say we're, you know, our brands are around 100 years old, some of them, and yet we're kind of a startup. And early on, as we set up the company, we started to look at where these macro trends of electrification are. And even back then, we knew that data centers, we didn't know all about AI data centers, but we knew that these trends of digitalization, sustainability were all going to take off. And this is back in 2018, right around 2018. So, we started to invest in our portfolio in liquid cooling and we started to do some other acquisitions. And one of the points that we make is that electrical infrastructure is growing significantly. You think of everything from data centers to the need for electric vehicles, electrification. So we started investing in products both organically and through acquisitions so that we could provide critical solutions. And that's the thing about nVent: you have to have our products. They're essential in this electrical infrastructure buildup. And so that's why you hear this comment about pick and shovel because they're systems and components that are necessary to build out all this electrical infrastructure.

So when did AI really enter into the picture? When you're making these investments and when did it become really apparent that this was going to take off?

Beth Wozniak8:25
When we were spinning as a company back in 2018, we were working with one of the first hyperscalers who found us and said, 'You're doing liquid cooling because we did enclosures and electronics get hot. We used to do traditional air cooling. We started to get into liquid cooling for industrial and medical applications and a hyperscaler came to us and I thought, hmm, very interesting. We must have something here. And we started to develop a portfolio just knowing that with data center growth, they needed to have ways to drive energy efficiency. And that's one thing liquid cooling does. Then I'm going to say it's about 3 years ago, 3 to 4 years ago, when AI data centers, you know, ChatGPT and Nvidia came out with their chips that we knew it was really going to take off. But we'd been investing for years before that to build out our portfolio. And now it's really hard to keep up with. We've done several expansions and we're continuing to invest in new products and expand capacity and it, we're in this trend right now where both AI data centers are growing and power is needed in the electrical infrastructure utilities to be able to support all that growth.

So how has this affected the way you think about the investments that you're making as a company? I mean, there's all this investment money flowing into AI. How does it affect the way you invest as a company looking ahead?

Beth Wozniak9:58
Okay. Well, we always knew we were going to focus the company more on this electrical infrastructure and at spin it was only 12% of our portfolio and today we ended last year where it was significantly more than that and last quarter it was over 50%. So what we recognized was how is this trend going to evolve and we could see the investment, I think it's $7 trillion being spent on AI data centers. I mean, it's a profound number. And the other thing that we could see in working with utility companies is that their investments in capital expenditures too really increase the capability of the grid because the grid has been aging. And one of the facts that we like to share is that if you think of the grid we have today took us a hundred years to build. In 25 years we have to do that same amount of work. Right? So that's significant investment. So we looked at those trends and started to say how do we invest in more capacity? How do we invest in more engineering capability? And we've been making those investments for the last several years. But actually it's been a surprise to the good that maybe we're not investing fast enough.

So how nervous are you about this investment wave? I mean, there's a lot of discussion. You're going to know a lot more than I do about it. Yes, this is a historic technology, but it's also a bubble or it could be both. And so, as you're more dependent on this AI, how are you looking at the risks?

Beth Wozniak11:40
Yeah. You know, as with anything, you have to look at your business and make sure that you understand the trends and you built resiliency into your business model. And so one of the things for us at nVent is we're not just supporting data centers, we're also supporting the buildout of electrical infrastructure which is everywhere. So we're never going to be a 100% data center company. That's not our goal. But I also wanted to just share with you that the liquid cooling solutions that we provide are really going to have more longevity than just building out a data center. Because if you think about it, compute and every year there's new chips, Nvidia is coming out with new chips, AMD, everyone's coming out with new compute capability. Those servers are being replaced every couple of years. And if you look at the penetration of liquid cooling in a data center, it's quite low. I mean, it's maybe 10% of data centers. So what we see is that while maybe you won't see all the build out of all these new data centers, the IT compute and servers are going to be changed out and you're going to need liquid cooling for a longer period of time.

And so this is where you're expanding your capacity here in Minnesota.

Yes.

Tell us a little bit about that.

Beth Wozniak13:02
Well, we're really on our third expansion. So our biggest manufacturing plant is in Anoka, Minnesota. And when we realized a couple of years ago how quickly we had to expand capacity, we didn't have time to find a new facility. So we thought the fastest thing we could do is move out our warehouse that was on site to a nearby distribution center in Dayton. And that gave us capacity to expand in that space. And then we realized, okay, that's not enough space. So again, we thought, how can we find another location nearby that could use our satellite site at Anoka? And so we just recently expanded in Blaine. And that site from when we signed the lease to were in production was 100 business days. I mean, I don't think we've ever moved that fast before. So, it's really a testament to the team and our ability to leverage our core resources in a campus location.

And how many employees? How much is all this translating into employee growth?
B
Beth Wozniak14:09
Yeah, over the last couple of years we've added about 200 employees and we're still adding more people. It takes a little while to find everyone, but it's really important, right, that as we're growing that we're sharing our story of why nVent is a great place to work and making sure that we train people. We're very proud of our culture, but we want people, as we grow, we want people to grow their careers with us.

So, I'm curious. I mean, you're a member of the Nvidia partner network.
B
Beth Wozniak14:39
We are.

Jamie Prankert14:40
So, what's it like being a partner with Nvidia? I mean, because they're also this multi-trillion dollar elephant in the room.
B
Beth Wozniak14:50
Well, I think the fact is they need to have partners because if they want to be able to sell more of their chip solutions, they need to have a network of partners who can help companies offering whether it's cooling solutions or power solutions. And so it's very complementary and it's also important because as we're designing our new products, we want to understand those roadmaps so that we're future-proofed. Some of our new products we're launching this year, we understand that technology roadmap out to 2030 and what the cooling and power needs are.

And then now shifting, how about AI within your company? How are you using it? How is it affecting your operations, how you do your business?
B
Beth Wozniak15:37
Well, I would say we're in early phases, but as we're going through this significant growth, AI is really helping us to augment what people do. And we're finding different ways. Everything from it's helping us to do some coding. It's helping us look at cybersecurity threats. It's helping us to just look at data and understand different trend models. We're using it across all of the company. We'll look at it at legal contracts. I think we're going to get more and more capability there. But when you're growing, it actually is extremely helpful to have AI to support some of the analytical work that we need to go do. And I think we're going to find more and more value from it as we learn, but we always want to have a human in the loop. That's really important to us.

But can you give us some examples of how AI is entering into your operations where you're getting some benefit from because I think it's one of the big questions out there. How much does this really? Yes, there's all this money, there's all this promise, but in the nitty-gritty of a business, how is it showing up?
B
Beth Wozniak16:50
Well, it's really labor savings. It's time savings, right? And in our case, when we're growing and we're trying to hire more people, it's making individuals more efficient. And so you can think about that with our customer care people when they're trying to respond to customers delivery inquiries or pricing. The fact that they have AI capability that can look at some data and provide some early responses as to was an issue, where's a delivery, is a customer issue resolved. Those are the early wins that we're getting.

So, one of the things that I found interesting is this new product vitality measure metric and it's revenue from products that were launched in the last five years.

Correct.

So, how did you make the journey from the low teens to 27%?
B
Beth Wozniak17:46
It was a stated goal for us and you know when you're in a business and we're very much engineered products it's really important that you understand to be competitive what are unmet needs of customers or where's technology headed so you can create new products to solve problems for your customers. So we started early on saying if we could increase this to around 20%, we thought we would be very competitive in the industry and it does matter. It does matter to your customers that you're coming out with new solutions. So it was a conscious effort and we really looked at our end-to-end process all the way through from our marketing and product management understand do we know what products we need to work on to our product development and engineering teams through the supply chain as well and then how we launch a product. So this was an end-to-end process and when we did that we said how do we invest more but how do we drive velocity and this is where we made huge improvements because I would say when we spun we weren't very good it took us like three years to launch a new product two to three years now the average new product is less than a year and so some of that comes into having good cross-functional teams. Some of that is using modeling and simulation. Some of that is just ensuring that we really had modular platforms and could drive scalable models. So there was a lot and I used to say we're going to keep investing in engineering but the fact of the matter is and we are but we keep growing and we keep getting faster at launching new products and that's been a big part of our growth story.

So one of the things obviously culture is very important to the company and innovation obviously feeds into that creating a culture of innovation. So how do you nurture innovation? How do you get more and more people involved in that?
B
Beth Wozniak20:02
Well, I always say, in order to be successful, you really have to do a couple of things. One, you have to spend time outside of your organization, right? That our engineers are out with customers. So, one of the things we do, we work with electrical contractors. We will have some of our engineers spend a day on a job site. So watching how a product is installed, watching how can we take labor out of that installation process and by allowing your organization to really understand customers problems, not just hear about it but see it, it creates a lot of creativity. And we talk about it all the time in terms of how do we invest in new technologies, how do we create new solutions and it's really having it creates part of creating a growth culture, quite frankly, and we often say not everything works so you got to fail fast and you have to learn and I think that's a lot about our culture.

And so how do you evaluate the risk that you're taking because innovation means some products become obsolete, some ways of doing business becomes obsolete, so it's like a risk management. So how do you approach risk?
B
Beth Wozniak21:30
Well, I think with anything with risk, obviously the bigger the risk, we're going to have more reviews, to be quite frank. But in every process that we have, we always kind of go back to what is the goal, what are we trying to do, has something changed, right? Has a new competitive offering come out? Okay, what do we think about that? Or is there some way that we don't have a capability that we need to partner with someone? So managing risk is really one of those core elements that we look at in terms of financial terms, in terms of resource capability, but we have the right measures along the way to ensure that we're on track, right? That we know that we don't get to three years and we've launched a product in the old days and realize our competition has moved past us to where we are today, we know pretty much if we need to make adjustments along the way.

So, one of the things you've said, three trends: electrification of everything, digitization, and sustainability. So, talk about sustainability because we also talk about data centers. There's a lot of controversy surrounding data centers, use of energy, use of water, drawing on a lot of resources and yet sustainability is a core value I guess.
B
Beth Wozniak22:38
Yeah. So, sustainability is important for us. If you think about electrification overall, as the trend everything moves toward electrification, it's a more sustainable solution. We think about sustainability and how we can support our customers and offer them energy efficient solutions. And we think about it in how we run our own business. So let's start with data centers. If you think about this and it's a very simple concept historically data centers had like HVAC systems that were cooling those server racks. So you can imagine even in your own home when there's just air blowing through your house, it can be hot, cold or whatever the case may be. When you get to liquid cooling, you're cooling that server. You can be cooling chips on a circuit card very specifically. So one of the things that is used in a data center is a term called PUE, power usage efficiency. And what that is is what percent of the energy going into a data center is used to drive the servers and the compute power versus all other things. And liquid cooling solutions can improve that power usage efficiency by up to 45%. And it's going to get better over time. So liquid cooling is actually a solution to drive more energy efficiency in a data center. So we're always looking at ways that we can help our customers drive to more sustainability and at the same time we look at ourselves and say how do we operate more efficiently. So we set goals. We publish a sustainability report every year and we think about people and products and planet and we're always looking at how we reduce our usage of water, how we're reducing our usage of energy and I think it's really impactful. I mean these end up being very good business decisions for us as well. And I think it really matters to our employees that as we're trying to find solutions for our customers, we're looking at ourselves and saying, 'What can we do to operate better?'

And I'm curious what, as you know, AI has gotten controversial. A couple commencement speakers have been booed when they've said positive things about AI. It's one of these issues. Data centers cuts across the traditional political divide. And I think the core issue is a lot of younger people the concern that there aren't going to be the jobs there for them. So I'm curious what is your perspective on AI and jobs and really sort of a future that you can grasp.

Beth Wozniak25:51
Look, I think every, every several decades there's some new technology that is disruptive. And if we think about the advancements that we have in our lifetime versus our parents and our grandparents, I mean, there's significant more benefits and capabilities whether it's travel by airplane, whether it's we all have phones that we have a source of information or keeping in touch with our family members. So when it comes to AI, AI is never going to replace humans, but it's going to provide support or productivity to different job functions. A lot of times there are things that people do as part of their job that are very, they take a lot of time. I mean, they're not even enjoyable tasks when you're trying to go through lots of different data in Excel, for example. So I think what we need to look at is as we go forward, there's a lot of knowledge-based workers, there's a lot of engineering solutions that we need, there's a lot of capability in manufacturing so that we can be more productive and so that we can drive to better capabilities across the landscape and I think things will change but I'm always optimistic. I think we're going to where AI can be a real benefit and certainly there's fields beyond industrial in medical applications and elsewhere there's real breakthroughs as a result of the power of AI.

And so now making a late shift but at the same time there's a you know in the competition for talent, and you know getting the engineering talent you need, the skill technicians that you need, how are you finding your talent?
B
Beth Wozniak27:43
Well, I would say for us as an event, you know, and so when we spun, we were about $2 billion. Last year, we're about $4 billion. We're on track to be around $5 billion. And I share with my team that I don't think it's too long before we're going to go from a $5 billion company to $10 billion. And our biggest challenge is finding talent and people. It really is because we're growing so fast. So, a couple of things that are important is that we want to ensure we're investing in people. And so, as we open up a new manufacturing facility, providing people with training, whether it's safety, whether it's job skill training, and showing them how they can progress their career in the manufacturing space, on the professional side, it's the same thing. We want people to take on new assignments, new challenges, and develop people and again put them in an environment where we like to drive performance. We like to work with customers and it's okay to fail because our culture is very much about performance and caring. So with talent, it's our biggest challenge and we're always looking to find great talent to bring into our company. So focusing on people really is important to us.

So, you know, we're on a university campus and people are graduating right now from graduate school or from undergraduate years and they're getting a lot of negative feedback these days. What would you advise them? You're launching your career, you're starting your career. How would you go about it?
B
Beth Wozniak29:35
Well, I think I would say to a new grad today is just be very open to possibilities. You know, I was an engineer myself and I didn't know what I wanted to do exactly. But no matter what
Your first job is, and I worked in the aerospace field when I first started working on aircraft simulators. You know, I learned a lot from that job. I worked with customers. I solved deep technical problems. What I did then is very different than what I do now. And I think look for a role and go into it. You don't have to think that's where your career is headed. I think sometimes young people think, 'Oh no, I'm going to make a mistake in finding that first job and learn and learn from others and learn how to work in a team and maybe your first job isn't what you're going to do in your second job, but just taking that first opportunity is so important.' And I think just be persistent. And when we look at talent, we look at potential. And we look at people who really want to do a good job for our customers, that they want to work in teams, and that they're willing to take risks with their own career.

And you mentioned the word mistake, and one of the questions from the audience is what's the best leadership lesson you've learned from a mistake you've made?
B
Beth Wozniak30:59
Well, I've made lots of mistakes. And I would say the thing about, you know, I'm maybe I'll say this. I've probably made as a more senior leader, one of the things as you become a leader of people is if someone is not performing, it's really you're nervous about giving them feedback. You're nervous to tell them, 'Hey, you're not performing.' But, you know, that is actually so important to give that feedback because the person receiving it knows that you care, that they're not doing a good job and that you're there and willing to help them. And so, I'd say early on in my career, one of my biggest mistakes was avoiding giving feedback. Now, I give feedback all the time, maybe too much, but [laughter] we like to say feedback is a gift at an event. But I think the thing is any mistake you make is just how do you learn from it and do better the next time.

And you also had a quite a career at Honeywell. And so what stuck with you from those years at Honeywell that you now tap into at Invent?
B
Beth Wozniak32:17
Being part of a larger company you really learn about different business models. So I spent half my career in aerospace and half my career in automation and controls. One was very engineering driven and regulatory environment. One was very much driven on getting new products and being very global and learning sales and marketing. So, in a big company, you learn about different business models and that's really important, but you also learn about how to drive best-in-class processes and because there's a lot of resources in larger companies. And so, I really feel that all the different assignments that I had in my career at Honeywell for 25 years led me to where I was today. So, I had what I like to say is you get cycles of learning. You have different experiences and those experiences when you come across a problem because in business you always have problems. Things don't always go your way but you can draw upon, 'Okay, I've seen something like that before,' and you have a good sense of what best-in-class is or how to lead teams of people to be able to achieve your goals.

So now shift a little bit and then AI is obviously one current event that's going on but some others, has tariffs had an impact on your business? Because I'm guessing here but probably a lot of steel, aluminum goes into your products.
B
Beth Wozniak33:47
Yes. I mean steel, copper, aluminum, all those essential metals. So yes, we have been impacted by tariffs and like anything there's always disruptions but you have to look at that and say, 'Okay, how do we respond to that?' And in our case it was a mix of how do we look at our supply chains and drive them to be more resilient and find different sources. In other cases it was how do we drive more productivity to offset the input cost. Some cases we raised our prices. So I always, with any business issue you have to have multiple ways to kind of solve that problem and we were able to manage through it.

And the war with Iran with the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, has that had much of an impact on you?
B
Beth Wozniak34:33
Not as much of an impact for us.

So you know you think about the last couple years, you had COVID, you had the high inflation years, you had tariffs, Liberation Day, we have war with Iran. So I mean that's a lot of shocks to the supply chains. So how are your supply chains adjusted over the years? What is the difference between your supply chain now versus 2018?
B
Beth Wozniak35:02
Well early on one of our tenets was we wanted to be able to move with velocity. That's that entrepreneurial culture we have. And we realized before even any of those things happened that how can we deliver faster to our customers. And we said we really need to have regional supply chains. So there was a time when a lot of companies had supply chains that were coming from China. But as we learned during COVID that didn't work for everyone. We have moved a lot of things to be more regional. So we're manufacturing across Europe for Europe. We're manufacturing in Asia for Asia. We're manufacturing in North America for our North American market. So that had proven to be very effective for us. And so as all these other shocks occurred, we just continue to look at how resilient is our supply chain. And even if we are regional, we look at do we have more than one supplier for critical components because anything can happen in terms of disrupting your supply chain. So resiliency is extremely important and then having a partnership with your critical suppliers is also so important.

So I'm curious with Europe, what is the state of data centers there? Is your business growing in Europe also?
B
Beth Wozniak36:28
It is growing with data centers but I would say Europe is several years behind. And that's really because most of the hyperscalers have put their investment into North America, but we've been investing in our manufacturing plants and our sales capability and it's a growth area for us as we go forward. So we see Europe and the data centers growing there just because everyone has a need for data. So it's one of those next growth initiatives for us.

So you're looking, speaking of growth initiatives, you're looking ahead the next five years or three years, planning ahead, where's the growth? I mean obviously AI, but how are you positioning yourself for the next three years?

Beth Wozniak37:14
So as we think about the next three years, we like to think of what is that possibility. So if we end this year we'll be 5 billion, we want to be at 10 billion so we want to double in the next three years. So we're investing in more new products for liquid cooling solutions not just for hyperscalers but for enterprise, colocation, all kinds of different customers. We're investing in products that are supporting the whole electrical grid buildout. So making sure that we've got power connections, we've got engineered buildings. If you ever look and see a substation and there's a large building, we make those buildings and we make a lot of the things that go inside of them as well. So for us right now, we're investing in manufacturing capacity across the country because we just know that we need to have more, there's more demand on us than we're able to provide right now. So I always like to say this, when we spun we said we want to be in high growth verticals, electrical infrastructure. We're going to grow with new products. We're going to grow through acquisitions and we're going to grow globally. And maybe it's the last one because we've grown so much in North America that even though we've grown in Europe and Asia, it's not to the same level. But all of those things have really helped position us for success. And now it's really about making sure that we can build the talent and find people to help us reach that goal.

So, speaking of your culture, looking at your board of directors. And I think it's unusual for a company your size. There are more women board directors than men. And so deliberate strategy.

Beth Wozniak39:44
Thank you. We, you know, even my leadership team is very diverse. So, and this speaks to our culture of being very inclusive. And I think that boards and leadership teams are most effective when you have different backgrounds, different experiences, different industries. And it's been intentional for us to get different executives on our board. And we always choose the most qualified candidate. And it turned out we ended up with more women than men. But every single board member that we added was very intentional. You know, we wanted someone from the electrical industry. We wanted someone with a technology background. We wanted someone from a utility company. And I think the thing is for us is when you have a diverse company or you've got an inclusive culture, it just attracts more diversity.

And does it help you in recruitment for talent? Because you mentioned that's your big obstacle is getting the talent that you need with your growth ambitions.

Beth Wozniak40:53
We want the very best talent and we want everyone to feel comfortable that they can grow their career and take on new assignments. So having a culture focused on people I think helps attract people.

Yeah. No. And this is back you probably many of you hadn't seen but back in 2019 when you did your previous First Tuesday, talked a lot about the importance of the layout, the way that you designed your headquarters and to make that inclusive and reflect the inclusivity. Did it work?

Beth Wozniak41:31
It did work. And in fact, you know, so when I first spoke I spoke about traditional office buildings had a lot of walls and we just said look we're going to have an open office environment and the best space in our office building, the best views we made open to everybody, our common area. And I think it's, you know, I've had people say, 'Wow, this is the best place I've ever worked.' And the cool thing is we were a couple, our headquarters was on floors of this building. We've now expanded to another floor. We're going to do another expansion with a customer experience center. So, yes, I think it does matter. You want to work in an environment where you see people, you connect with people, share ideas. It does matter.

So, I have to ask you, I think this was an interview with your former CFO and she said, 'Do you intentionally listen?' Which is, you know, that's good. And she often says there are always three sides to every story. How are the three, what are the three sides?

Beth Wozniak42:30
Okay. Well, I have a lot of sayings, so I like to use them with our team because I think it's helpful and these are leadership lessons. The point of saying that there's three sides to every story is really just to say when you have a problem or an issue, go out there and verify, just don't take one opinion, get a couple of different views. And so sometimes you will get three different perspectives or sometimes maybe you get similar views but it's so important that we listen and hear different sides to a story. And I have a lot like that, like 'get what you tolerate,' and that's one that is basically if it's bad behaviors or if quality is an issue or whatever the case may be, if you're tolerating that you're going to get those results. I like to say that 'know why the wall was built before you tear it down.' And I didn't make up all these things, I've inherited them from people I've learned from over the years. But that really is people come in and they say, 'Oh, why do you do things that way?' We want people to understand. There's usually a good reason. Maybe that was the technology available to us or maybe we acquired this company and that's what they did. Seek to understand and then go and make changes. We're all about doing better. We're all about driving to what's best in class, but understand what was done before because there's probably a reason for it. So we have a lot of leadership sayings like that that we use at Invent.

So, speaking of leadership, I mean, it's a fast growing company in a fast growing sector of the economy. In fact, sector of the economy that's keeping this economy going forward. How has that affected your leadership style and decision-making?
B
Beth Wozniak44:13
Yeah, look, I think being an engineer, I always like to have facts and data, but I've gone through where I've learned how to be decisive. Now, I want to have a team of people around me who feel free to disagree with me, and I want us to always make fact-based decisions. But you know, you have to rely on a great team of people and you have to have good processes in place so that you understand if where you're making investments, are they tracking? But you have to be decisive. You know, it's so important for us that as we're trying to move quickly that we can't take weeks on certain decisions. We have to be able to make decisions in a time pace that matches the growth that we're seeing.

And this is another question from the audience. If you were mentoring a mid-career engineer who wanted to become a senior executive, what would you tell them to focus on over the next couple of years?

Beth Wozniak45:14
So first I would say you want to ensure that you are a good team player and that you work well with people because there are some great engineers out there who just want to be engineers. But if you want to become an executive, you have to learn how to manage and lead people. The skills you learn as an engineer and problem solving serve you really well. I would say that from personal experience, but certainly take on new assignments. The times that I grew and learned the most were when I was the most scared because, 'I don't know anything about this business or I don't know anything about this situation.' But then know how to work with teams of people so you can get different perspectives to help you make good decisions. And don't be afraid to fail. And no one expects you to know everything, but just know when to ask for help.

So, what did you learn from Sally Ride?

Beth Wozniak46:19
Oh, Sally Ride. So, I learned that she was the first astronaut and she was not afraid to break down barriers and she took risks. And I think she also inspired a lot of young girls that science is cool and science is fun. And what I learned from her is that really you can do anything if you put your mind to it and you focus on it. And that being a role model because I think in her later years she spent a lot of time just trying to educate everyone on the opportunity besides showing great photos. Astronauts have the best photos. She really showed that there's opportunities for everyone to do whatever career they want to do.

Yeah. And one of the things that's striking, you know, looking at reports and various different things, don't shy away from diversity, don't shy away from inclusiveness. I mean, these are terms that you've sprinkled throughout and that's not always the case today.

Beth Wozniak47:37
Yeah. Well, look, I think at the end of the day, there are so many opportunities that we're better for having different perspectives. And I wouldn't want to be any other way. Let me share a story with you. We do have a lot of women at Invent in an industrial company and one night we were having a late night meeting making some decisions and one of my executives went home that night and he was male and he said to his wife, 'I was in this meeting with seven women last night and he said, 'How cool is that?' And he came back the next day and we had a conversation and I was teasing him and I'm like, 'Were you comfortable?' And he's like, 'Beth, I felt safe.' So, look, sometimes I'm trying to just be very aware like of whatever our situation is. How do we just make everyone feel that their voice can be heard?

And do you feel that one of the trends that's unfolding, and this is a suspicion of mine, is that with all the changes that are going on, companies actually training their employees becomes more important, that many companies sort of offloaded that either onto the individual or to other organizations. Do you see training becoming a bigger part of what you do with your existing employees like you'd mentioned with the expansions out in Blaine and in Anoka?

Beth Wozniak49:06
I look, I think training is important always. And some of it doesn't always have to be formal training. This is one thing. I mean sometimes it's on the job training. We've done eight acquisitions and so we often take people and say, 'We're going to put you on this integration and they've never done that before, but we're going to help you or you're going to learn some of it by doing.' So I think you need to train people in certain job requirements and you need to create sandboxes and others like in the case of AI we provide people some training but then we let them use it and have fun with it. And then there's leadership development training as well. And look, I would say we can do a lot more at Invent, but it is important to invest in people.

So you've done eight acquisitions but you also did a couple of divestures too. So how do you decide which side to take? We're going to make this acquisition and this has been a good business, but it has to go elsewhere.
B
Beth Wozniak50:02
Yeah. So, there was when we spun, we had kind of three businesses and we always knew there was one that didn't quite fit like the others and we had to look at the right time to exit that business and what were we going to bring into the portfolio. But it comes back to your strategy. We're very consistent and say we want to grow in electrical infrastructure. This business just didn't have the growth potential. It was a very profitable business. It just didn't have the growth that we wanted. And we just kind of evaluated that and said we would be better off to acquire some other businesses that helped us build our portfolio. And we always look at: is it a great product? Is it in a high growth vertical? And can we see how to grow that business? Because we buy companies at the end of the day that we can see the growth potential and we've done a lot of deals where you know it sometimes the culture of a company just doesn't fit and you can tell that and you're just like, 'I don't think that's a good business.' But not good for Invent. So I think we've just gotten very disciplined in how we do M&A.

Yeah. So, and what you know, one of the things off what you've been saying, if you go back a decade ago or 15 years ago, I mean, there are a lot of articles, a lot of commentary about America's aging electrical infrastructure. And coming out of this period of time, there's a lot of strain on our electrical infrastructure right now, but are we going to get a whole new grid?

Beth Wozniak51:36
I think we're going to add and modernize the grid. So I think if you look and we're also going to see different types of energy sources. So whether that's solar energy, wind energy and every state is going to be different based on what you know, in Minnesota there's more wind than there would be in Arizona where there's more sunlight and so you have more solar, then you have battery energy storage. So you're seeing different energy sources. So the grid used to just be one way, but now it's two-way because you've got different power elements coming onto the grid. You've got to store it. You've got transmission, distribution, all of that. So I think you're going to see our grid more modernized and more capability built out.

And does it matter to your business, whether it's solar, whether it's wind, oil and gas?

Beth Wozniak52:30
We like all forms of energy that convert to electrical energy. [laughter]

And in terms of you said North America is where a lot of your growth is and has been. So do you think that and I know you're going to be expanding elsewhere but do you still see North America as your main market?
B
Beth Wozniak52:51
We do. We just, you know, the investments in AI, the need for the grid, the innovation that's going on. I mean, it's a great time to be in the electrical industry.

And you sort of said, you know, and why is Minnesota a good state for you to be doing business?

Beth Wozniak53:12
Well, our roots are here, right? We spun out of Pentair and one of the things that I think is great about Minnesota is just it's a headquarters economy right and so we have a lot of professionals, education is good, you can have two career families here and schools are good, all of that just supports the environment for us. But I think we've got to work more on ensuring that we've got good trades people as well. I say that from the technical college standpoint. But in terms of just a good population to draw upon for a workforce, it certainly helped us grow as fast as we have.

And how hard is it for you to attract people to come here because, you know, there's the cliche about, you like sayings, the cliche is, it's hard to get people to come here, but once they've been here for a while, they don't want to leave.

Beth Wozniak54:08
This is a true statement. Look, I would say, you know, we have winter here and as you all know, and so sometimes it's hard to attract people who are like don't like winter, but we do really well in attracting people from Midwestern states. I would say that and we do well attracting international people also.

And so just as the sort of final note or last note again because we are on a university campus and we touched on this, but sort of what advice do you wish that you were given when you were younger that you would give to a younger person now?

Beth Wozniak54:50
Well, I you know one of the things that don't be afraid to take chances and don't be afraid to take risks. And I think sometimes, you know, I remember when I love math and science and I had a high school teacher who said, 'Why don't you consider being an engineer?' And I'm like, 'An engineer? Okay.' you know, and I think we need to make sure that kids today know that they have all possibilities open to them and you don't need to get stereotyped and is this suit me or is that not a career women go into or whatever the case may be. And I think that's the advice that I would give kids today is just don't be afraid to learn, try new things. Your first job is not likely where your career is going to end up. And along the way you may decide, okay, I studied as an engineer, but now I'm into business. At the end of the day, it's about can you learn, can you grow, can you work with other people? And making mistakes is okay. You just have to learn and recover.

One more question. So, what does this feel like to be the head of what may be the largest, most dynamic headquarters company that nobody actually really seems to know much about in the Twin Cities? I'm sorry to say that, but you know...

Yeah, look, it's very exciting and you know, we show our video because we have a lot of big companies in Minnesota that people know because they're consumer companies and, you know, for the longest time, 'Invent, what do you do?' And I'm like, 'Okay, well, here's what we do. We're in the grid. We're built.' And they're like, 'Well, it sounds really important.' I mean, I'm excited because I'm an engineer, but look, I think as we grow and as more people work at Invent and as more people learn about who we are, we are able to attract more people. And at the end of the day, if all of our companies in Minnesota do well, we all do well. And so I think that's what's really important is that we create a community where there's opportunities for everyone to really grow and invest back in the community. That's also really important to Invent.
