On one hand we have Lily Ley, VP and CIO of PACCAR Inc, who is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Master of Science in Information Systems at the University of Washington. In 2016 she was recognized as the most powerful and influential woman in Washington by the Washington Diversity Council. In 2021 she was named Influential Woman in Trucks. Welcome, Lily. Thank you, Stefy. It is an honor to be here today with all of you. For those following us on social media or the internet, please follow us on all AMPAC and Expo Transporte social media. Imagine a world where commercial vehicles are no longer mechanical machines but intelligent trucks and tractors driven by software. As a woman born in Mexico and a promoter of information technologies in a US-based company ranked among the top 200 internationally, I am here to tell you that the future is happening and we are seeing technological advances. We are on the brink of a technological revolution, and Mexico, with its talent pool, has a great opportunity to take advantage of this technological advance. I invite everyone to join me in exploring the transformative potential of information technologies and the automotive industry, and how the role of women plays a fundamental part in the architecture of our future.
The commercial vehicle industry is moving away from its traditional mechanical heritage, becoming intelligent trucks and tractors driven by cutting-edge software, where their features and added value are key. By embracing this change, we are revolutionizing our industry and driving it toward a more sustainable and efficient future. Many companies, including PACCAR, are adopting nearshoring strategies to capture talent and attract more talent to our companies. According to Statista, the international market for information technology services is projected to reach a value of 1.4 trillion dollars by next year. Mexico, due to its proximity to the United States, provides different advantages: shared time zones, cultural affinity, reduced travel costs, and the regulatory compatibility we have through our international trade. This trend presents a great opportunity for women to be at the forefront of information technology development and the automotive industry. Mexico is becoming the global center of the automotive industry. According to the International Trade Administration of Mexico, the manufacturing sector contributes 3.5% of the nation's GDP and 20% of manufacturing GDP, employing over a million people. One out of every five Mexicans is indirectly part of the productive chain of the industrial sector. Our country graduates twice as many students as Brazil in technical education, which positions us favorably with the industry.
We must take advantage of this great opportunity to redirect, and we must take advantage of this opportunity in STEM areas and redirect the new generations we see here in front of us so that they can adopt and be equipped for the next generation with the necessary skills to thrive in technology-driven industries of the future, which are on the perfect development trajectory. I congratulate you and your parents for this work you are doing for a more inclusive society. We must commit to familiarizing both men and women equally in engineering and information technology areas, which are the areas we really need, at least in the automotive industry, in the development of new products and services we are developing. For this, more than words, through our association with [organization], we are promoting STEM areas in seven schools in Mexicali, Bravo, and our plan is to continue growing and supporting this noble development that Roberto is leading in our country. By breaking gender barriers and offering equal opportunities, we create a more level playing field where everyone, men and women, can achieve and excel in the areas they have chosen to develop their professions.
We also understand the importance of fostering and supporting women in our organization. The PACCAR Women's Association offers opportunities such as mentoring, networking, and connections to ensure that women have a platform to achieve their success. We understand and are committed to bringing more women and empowering them to reach their full potential. I am very proud to share that at PACCAR Mexico we have more than 500 women working in our organization, which makes me very proud because I started, grew, and developed at PACCAR Mexico, and it gives me great satisfaction to say that we have more than 500 women, and that makes me proud to wear the cap and the noble task that many women globally at PACCAR are doing to promote and develop more women in the company. Thank you very much. In PACCAR's technology division, we look beyond gender and ethnicity when recruiting and selecting personnel. We adopt a global perspective, recognizing that diversity is a key driver for success in the era of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. We are actively seeking Mexican talent, which is highly talented, creative, flexible, and I am very happy to work with many people from Mexico because of their ability to learn so quickly and the flexibility to adjust to different needs, which in some other cultures is not so easy to develop. That is why I continue promoting and trying to develop and truly capture Mexican intellect and people who can migrate to other entities, like Mayira Molina, who recently transferred to PACCAR as the director of human resources for the Peterbilt division. Seeing women in leadership is crucial to inspire and inspire more women at PACCAR. We understand the importance of providing role models and mentors who can demonstrate that success has no gender barriers. By fostering an environment where women can thrive, we inspire future women leaders.
I am the oldest of five siblings. My father was a taxi driver, and his first vehicle, his car, was his main engine. We lived day to day. If the car was broken, we had no income, and there was nothing to bring to the table. When the car broke down, I remember from the age of 8, he needed a mechanic assistant. Being the oldest, I was his assistant. Since I already knew how to read and knew numbers and fractions, he would ask me while he was under the car repairing the engine, transmission, axle, or the transverse. '5/8 wrench, no, not that one, no, 5/8, no, you're wrong. Now flathead screwdriver, now Phillips screwdriver.' And that's how we developed what we now call partnership, teamwork. Because I was the oldest, I helped my dad repair his cars. The faster the car ran, the more he could go out to work, earn money, and bring food to the table. It was that simple. That inspired me to really become interested in science and mathematics and to obtain a professional degree with the support of my parents and my grandfather. That's how I decided to enter university. I say with great pride, I went to university because my grandfather paid for private school, which at that time was not accessible for us, but he paid with his pension, and that's why I had the opportunity to graduate in computer science engineering and then continue supporting my parents because there were five of us who followed. That makes me proud, and I am very happy about it, and that's why I bring it here: because if we set our minds to it, we can achieve it. So go ahead.
PACCAR recognizes Mexico as an exceptional source of talent. As proof of our belief, I share the fact that PACCAR was the first manufacturer to produce a battery electric truck in Mexico. We are eager to further leverage the country's expertise and take advantage of cutting-edge technologies to drive our industry, and I believe we are on the right path. I see new faces, new people really pushing hard the development of all the initiatives we have in the company. We believe that Mexican women have a very important role to play in shaping the future of the automotive and transportation industry. I encourage Mexican women to seize the opportunity to excel in the technology and automotive industry. This sector is full of opportunities in autonomous vehicles, zero-emission trucks, and artificial intelligence systems and tools. Thank you. What a pleasure to be here with you. Truly, Lili, thank you for your words. Thanks also to Stefy, Javier, and everyone at PACCAR and Kenworth for all the support. I want to tell you a little about us as a group that promotes robotics. Some of you, perhaps like me when I was a kid, wanted to be an astronaut. Lili got close to mechanics helping her dad, but sometimes we didn't always have someone around who could help us. I remember I had thousands of questions like how black holes work, what happens with atoms. Once with my grandmother, who took care of me, I burned a bathroom doing a chemistry experiment that didn't go so well. And that's how one learns, right? That's how one awakens curiosity. We realized 17 years ago that not everyone had this space close by, and that there were many girls and boys who wanted to get close to science, technology, and robotics, and there wasn't always a way to do it. That's why we started Roboti Robotics 17 years ago. From there, we started doing projects in private schools. Eventually, we had teams that won national robotics competitions and participated in international events, which allowed us to keep advancing. We started having students who won some competitions at NASA. That opened the doors for us to think that what we did, what the girls and boys in Mexico did, had that great talent that Lily mentions, and we wanted to unleash it and take it further, beyond just private schools, to think about all schools, public schools, formal and informal learning centers. Well, we started collaborating with the government more than 10 years ago, bringing community centers nationwide on robotics topics so that girls and boys could get close to these subjects. That experience made us realize that talent is everywhere, that girls from Oaxaca, children from Baja California, Guanajuato all have the same talent, and what's missing are opportunities. When we could ensure that everyone had the opportunity to be stimulated in science and technology, everyone could achieve enormous results. Today, Fundación Robotics supports 1,500 educational centers, mostly public schools with state education secretariats, and we have formed alliances with various organizations, including PACCAR and Kenworth, to ensure that more schools and more girls and boys have these opportunities to get close to robotics, science, and technology. We believe that our passion as Mexicans for STEM and the future will allow us to build a much more solid future.
Well, as you know, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have to do with that accelerator we have as an industry or as an economy to innovate. It has a lot to do with added value to move from manufacturing to 'mindfacturing' and the opportunity to generate much more innovation in Mexico. We believe there is a great opportunity, not only nearshoring as mentioned now, but all the talent of the Mexican industry depends on more girls and boys getting close to these topics from a young age. In particular, now in the context of Guadalajara, talking with the Regional Council of Guadalajara, approximately today about 9,500 professionals per year are needed in Guadalajara in STEM topics. These are vacancies in science, technology, programming, mathematics, and yet in the entire region there are about 3,000 graduates. That means we are missing about 6,000 people each year who could fill those jobs. And this issue is not only in Guadalajara; it is an issue in all cities of the world, also in Baja California, in different regions where Mexican companies are, also on the border. So we know that eventually one of the restrictions for the country's economic growth is human talent, and that's why it's important to develop it from childhood. Today, as a foundation, we have two main lines: the main one is to expand so that more girls and boys get close to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and we also train educational figures. One of our most successful programs is the First Lego League program, which is done in alliance with LEGO Education and First, in which girls and boys have the opportunity to get close by solving an important problem of humanity each year. We have had problems like water, space, bees, transportation. Allow me to show you this brief video about what First Lego League is about, and in a few minutes we will present a team that has been doing First Lego League.

First Lego League is present in more than 110 countries around the world and is a program in which we recover the voices of girls and boys to help us solve the problems facing humanity. Each year, a theme is chosen in which girls and boys will work, from exploring what is happening with those problems to helping us solve them. The alliance between First and LEGO Education is born from a genuine interest in inspiring the builders of tomorrow around technology. The more we inspire children in these disciplines that are part of STEM, the more builders we will have in terms of creativity. First Lego League is a very versatile educational program that can be implemented in any learning center, whether in public schools, private schools, or community centers. Additionally, schools can implement it extracurricularly or curricularly. First Lego League includes different LEGO Education materials and guides for both students and teachers, where each session to implement the program is explained. When children work in these types of programs, they develop not only programming or technology skills but also teamwork, collaborative work, they meet students from different grades, learn to express themselves, present projects, research. It allows students to develop new skills that will give them access to better opportunities in their daily and future lives. My students have developed many different skills in this program, not only science or math skills but also skills in Spanish or language because they have to make a presentation, learn their dialogues, know how to present themselves in front of an audience. I see when the kids come in, they are one way, and they leave transformed automatically. They are much more mature, much more expressive, they work super well as a team, they are more resilient, they promote values a lot, and they also promote the development of 21st-century skills like critical thinking. At the end of each season, the teams celebrate everything they learned in different events, whether school, national, or even international. In these events, they participate and interact with other teams, volunteers from different organizations, and together we make a great community. We see in the classrooms where we are implementing First Lego League, the girls and boys are very excited to present projects to teachers, to touch on relevant topics, and it is the way we want to live education: an education that excites the student so that through learning, everyone can be part of this and thus form the community we want.

Well, this is First Lego League, and I want to tell you about the case we had in Baja California. In Baja California, we worked with Kenworth and PACCAR. We had a relevant situation: it was a state where we still couldn't easily access bringing these programs. We started working with them in the 2021 school year, and our first experiment was to work with 13 schools. We began collaborating with the Secretary of Education of Baja California. Baja California has six municipalities, and they were very interested in being able to bring development to all municipalities of Baja California and that schools would have this access. Thanks to the collaboration with PACCAR, we were able to grow so that the following year we went from 13 schools to 27 schools, and we also managed to convince the Secretary of Education of Baja California to join efforts and budget to continue with more schools. This collaboration was very successful. It allowed us last school year to impact up to 2,000, almost 2,500 girls and boys, of which 52% were girls, and 31 teachers from these schools so they can do STEM continuously. For this school year, we grew the program again and managed to go from 27 to 39 schools this school year that started a couple of months ago. We have 39 schools in Baja California. For us, this is a success story in which private initiative, thanks to PACCAR, together with the state government and us as a foundation, are managing to impact. We hope this year to reach up to 11,000 students. In this way, we can generate greater local capacity that will eventually translate into regional economic capacity. This case is so important to us that it reflects well what has happened to us nationally. Today, nationally, we hope to grow to 1,700 schools in all 32 states of the republic.
And well, this season the theme will not be space, it will not be water. The international committee decided that this year the theme has to do with art. So the girls and boys will tell us how art is related to science and technology, and from there they will tell us what they are interested in communicating, which we think is important to also hear the voices of girls and boys regarding what they see as relevant. Each school year, we have the challenge of reaching all the schools we have the capacity to impact, in this case 1,700 schools. And in January and March, schools have the opportunity to participate in a regional event. These are events where they can participate to move on to a national phase. Last year we had 14 events of this type, and this was made possible thanks to 871 volunteers who donated their time to give feedback to the girls and boys, be with them during the event, and help us decide who the winners would be. This school year we expect to have 20 events, so we are looking for 1,600 volunteers between January and March to be able to hold all the events in all the regions where we are. We have events almost all over Mexico in different cities and regions. We are looking for this volunteer base. And well, the regional events have as their final venue our national event in Mexico City, which will be on March 9, and from there we have five international events, of which the most important, something like our Olympics, is the World Championship in Houston, where more than 45 countries out of the 110 that do First Lego League worldwide attend. And with this and this introduction, I want to present to you the team Sorinex, which last school year at the Regional Event in Guadalajara right here were crowned as runners-up of the event and also won the regional innovation project. They are part of the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz school and are here with us. So I give them a warm welcome.

I also think it has been a great challenge for us because we went from being elementary school teachers to becoming programming teachers, design teachers, engineering teachers. We self-trained, adjusted our schedules outside of our work time to help the kids carry out the robotics project and invite them to have new experiences day by day. So for us, it has been a challenge as colleagues and as teachers. We also want to thank our school community: parents, teachers, administrators, who have supported us greatly, both in resources and time, and in everything we have needed to develop the robotics project at our school.
