About Roberto Merino

Roberto García Merino, CEO of Redeia Corporación, stated in March 2025 that the upcoming grid plan will focus on demand, specifically new consumption centers such as data centers, industrial projects, and green hydrogen. He noted that the government has received requests to incorporate over 100,000 MW of new demand into the Spanish electricity system, which he described as a signal of the country's competitiveness. In February 2025, García Merino and Chairwoman Beatriz Corredor presented the company's 2024 financial results. García Merino said that Red Eléctrica invested over 1,100 million euros in 2024, a record in its 40-year history and nearly triple the investment of five years earlier. He stated that the company's 2025 investment target for Red Eléctrica exceeds 1,000 million euros, and that the group's strategic plan will surpass 4,200 million euros. García Merino also highlighted the closure of the Hispasat operation as a key step in the group's telecommunications strategy.

Hello Roberto, hello Beatriz. Today we are presenting the results of Redeia 2024, an intense year that has had everything. But before we start, what aspect would you highlight of 2024, an aspect of 2024?
R
Roberto Merino0:13
Well, I would say that we have fulfilled, I would say that we have exceeded what we promised because we have invested more than 100 million euros to advance the energy transition through our subsidiary Red Eléctrica. It is a record figure in the 40-year history of our TSO and it practically triples that of just five years ago. Indeed, Beatriz, exactly one year ago we committed to Red Eléctrica's investments breaking records, exceeding 1,000 million euros, and today they are no longer promises but facts. The company made a great effort and finally the TSO invested 115 million euros this year, 34% more than the investment in 2023, making clear our commitment to the energy transition. So yes, we have fulfilled.
B
Beatriz0:39
Yes, it is true that they are historic figures and with them we continue accelerating the energy transition so that Spain consolidates the leadership it already has in renewable energies. We have closed the year with the highest renewable generation share in history, up to 56%, and installed renewable capacity of 66% of the total. And also we strengthen the industrial fabric because our country has a historic and unprecedented opportunity to be at the forefront of the energy transition and must take advantage of it. Our investments are materialized in great advances in the projects of the current electricity planning. Let me recall some, for example, the progress in interconnections that are already under construction. This is the case with the Peninsula-Ceuta link, with its commissioning for this 2025; with the interconnection with Portugal, which already has in service the substations of Fonte Fría and Beiz; or the interconnection works with France through the Bay of Biscay, a strategic link for Spain and for Europe, and it is advancing at a very good pace. We have also put into service or initiated strategic infrastructures in practically all autonomous communities throughout the territory for the reinforcement of the network to support new industrial demand. For example, the substations of Almendrales and Espartal in Aragon; the substation of Verdad, which is key for the port of Barcelona; Saguntum for the industry of the Valencian community; the expansion of substations in Madrid or Castilla y León; and some new ones in Extremadura, which will also supply future and necessary railway corridors. There are actions in Jaén, Huelva, Cádiz, Eastern Almería; the new Güeñes- line in the Basque Country; the batteries in the Balearic Islands to maximize the link with the peninsula. There are many, many places that have been achieved in recent months and that demonstrate the great investment capacity of our group. As is often said, without transmission there is no transition, but I would now add but also no reindustrialization.

Yes, Beatriz, and beyond the planning, we have continued at a very good pace with the civil works of the Chira salt-jump power plant, which is essential for the energy transition of Gran Canaria. Moreover, it is a project that has the support of FEDER funds and has also received financing from the European Investment Bank. So much has been achieved in the past fiscal year, but 2024 is already history and now we have the focus on 2025, for which we again set a very ambitious horizon. Our objective for 2025 is that Red Eléctrica's investments exceed 10,000 million euros, that is, to increase again the investments of 2023, which were already historic, and to surpass those investment references of 400 million per year that are already far behind. With this commitment, the TSO's total investment in the 2021-2025 period, our strategic plan, will exceed 4,200 million euros, levels never seen in this company and we will see where they go in the coming years. 2025 will also bring novelties in the group's configuration with the closing of the Hispasat operation, and with this operation we will close the investment strategy in the telecommunications field that has generated a positive impact on the group of 800 million euros. And we will continue in the telecommunications field working in the fiber optic sector through Reintel.

Beatriz2:33
Yes, it is true, Roberto, that Hispasat is a key operation for Red through which we reinforce our DNA, which is to be a neutral manager of essential infrastructures at a time when the European satellite sector is positioning itself around security and defense. But we also reinforce the financial position to accompany the energy transition and the industrial development of Spain through Red Eléctrica. Because that will be the focus of our next strategic plan: the punctual and efficient deployment of the transmission network infrastructure that will be included in the 2025-2030 planning, which is the toolbox we must use so that Spain achieves the objectives designed in the energy roadmap, which is the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, our PNIEC. That is how it is. And although we have focused on investments, let me also comment on the main magnitudes of the income statement, which this year, especially with the adjustment of pre-98 assets and the Hispasat operation, deserve a special analysis. A first message is that the results are in line with what we expected at the start of the year. In terms of revenue, we almost reached 1,650 million euros, and EBITDA exceeded 1,210 million. But it is important to consider the impact of the pre-98 assets and the Hispasat magnitudes, which if not considered in the group's magnitudes would generate a positive impact on EBITDA of 90 million compared to 2023 EBITDA, almost increasing. Net profit stood at 368 million euros, but it is directly affected by the loss we recognized from the Hispasat operation, and without this effect we would have exceeded 500 million, which was our commitment at the beginning of the year.

Roberto Merino3:02
In short, year after year we are fulfilling our strategic plan, but I think the main message of 2024 is that leap in investment volume, that 34% increase compared to 2023, preparing the company for the future.
B
Beatriz3:04
And as always in this future, Roberto, we are going to meet our business objectives but being faithful to our essence, which is to leave things better than we found them, which for us is how sustainability is defined: being enduring. And it will continue to be the guide for all our decisions.
R
Roberto Merino3:26
And now more than ever, in 2024 we have begun to deploy all the power of our comprehensive impact strategy, which is the framework of action that involves all business areas, all geographical areas, to coordinate all our relationships with the environment and ensure that our infrastructures are deployed in coherence with that non-negotiable commitment to sustainability. We do it with the consensus of the territory and the people and the communities that live in it, and we respect their landscape, their diversity, their biodiversity, their historical heritage, their archaeological and cultural heritage, their way of life and their customs, and we seek for them the positive impact. Of this 2024, I take away the consolidation of this strategy with which we have promoted hundreds of initiatives that, although they may seem small from the local point of view, are very powerful from the personal and social point of view, for an amount of more than 9 million euros.
That's right, and we close, Beatriz, therefore, 2024, a difficult year, but with the feeling of a job well done thanks to the effort and commitment of all the professionals of Redeia, who are sincerely the best asset of the company. And we continue working in 2025 with the aim of successfully concluding our strategic plan, a year that is also very special, Beatriz, because it is the 40th anniversary of Red Eléctrica.
B
Beatriz4:47
Well, yes, last January 21 we turned 40 years, 40 years at the service of the country, making possible our economic, industrial and social development from our commitment to sustainability and the general interest, and our indelible vocation of public service.
R
Roberto Merino5:10
And indeed, the soul of Redeia are the people, and this is the merit of all those who are part of this great family, first of Red Eléctrica and now of Redeia, of their effort, commitment, professionalism, dedication and vocation of public service. I want to send them all a thank you and a special recognition with affection. And this year I am going to refer very specifically to the teams from the communities affected by the DANA last October 29 and to those from Valencia who in 100 days recovered full normality and functionality of all our installations, which, by the way, never stopped providing this essential service despite the significant damage suffered. Thank you very much to all and a hug.
