About Charles Lowrey
Charles Lowrey, Executive Chairman of Prudential Financial, marked the company's 150th anniversary in March 2025 by ringing the opening bell and participating in celebrations. He stated that Prudential's longevity is due to its "North star" of serving customers and providing financial security, and noted that the company has evolved its business mix and operating model to become "higher growth, more capital efficient." Lowrey expressed confidence in the leadership transition to incoming CEO Andy Sullivan, saying the new team has a "really strong foundation" and that he will support them as executive chairman.
In earlier appearances, Lowrey discussed industry challenges including generative AI and changing customer demographics. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he emphasized Prudential's "rock-solid balance sheet" and actions taken to mitigate impacts, including pausing share repurchases and issuing a $1.5 billion green bond. He has also spoken about digital transformation in insurance, describing efforts to create a "simpler customer-focused experience" and using data analytics to predict risk. Regarding international strategy, Lowrey noted Prudential's focus on Asia and Africa, describing Africa as having "tremendous upside" and stating the company committed $350 million to invest in African life insurers.

You're here today. You rang the opening bell to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Prudential, an amazing milestone. So tell me, what was it like ringing the bell and how are you celebrating this incredible milestone?
C
Charles Lowrey0:26
We're celebrating many different ways, this being one of the real events because today was the day we were founded. We have a flag raising in our home office this afternoon. We have events happening all over the world, frankly, because we're on six continents and serve 50 million customers. So we're really excited. It started with a Rose Bowl, where we were the main sponsor of the Rose Bowl, and it will end with a big celebration at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. So lots of different celebrations in between, celebrating 150 years.

Now tell me, Charlie, how has Prudential established itself as a multigenerational company?
C
Charles Lowrey1:06
Companies that survive and thrive over the years have to have a North Star. Whatever that North Star is, for us it's our purpose. It's serving our customers and providing financial security and peace of mind to clients all over the world in retirement, in insurance, and investment. And if you have a singular focus, which is your client and what they need and your customer, then you will adapt, you'll change, you'll thrive over time, but with the sole focus of serving your customer. And that's what we've done for 150 years.

Over the past few years, Prudential has evolved its business mix and operating model to become a higher growth, more capital efficient company. What progress have you made so far?
C
Charles Lowrey1:50
We made significant progress in becoming a higher growth, as you say, more capital efficient and more nimble company by really again focusing on our customers, what they need, what they want, and they tell us. And so we've changed our products, we've changed distribution, we've changed our business mix. And if you look over 150 years, we have continued to change all during that time. We started by delivering burial insurance to working-class families who couldn't afford it. That was our only business. And over the years, we've morphed and evolved and changed as our customers have changed, both in the United States and now all over the world. And we will continue to change as we go forward. So this evolution of our company is just going to continue.

Prudential recently announced changes in its senior leadership, including the appointment of a new CEO, as you transition into an executive chairman role over the next 18 months. How confident are you in the team's ability to lead Prudential into the future?
C
Charles Lowrey2:50
I am extraordinarily confident. I think transitions best occur when two things happen simultaneously. One, the old leadership team, if you will, the incumbent team, provides a really strong foundation for the new team, and that there's an amazing number of opportunities ahead. And both those are the case here. So Andy Sullivan, who's taking over as CEO, has been part of the leadership team for a long period of time and has been part of creating the strategy that we have. And therefore, there's going to be a continuation of that strategy and an evolution over time, as you'd expect. So we think it's going to be a smooth transition. In my role as executive chairman, I will be here to support Andy and his team in whatever way they need. But I couldn't be more excited about Andy and his team and about the future of Prudential.
