Oklo CEO Jacob DeWitte discussed the rapid scaling of nuclear power in the U.S., citing AI, improved appliances, and manufacturing reshoring as drivers of rising energy demand. He said the Groves project in Texas, where the reactor achieved criticality two days ago, is the fastest-built nuclear reactor on private lands in U.S. history, supported by private capital. DeWitte argued that industry leadership, with government enabling rather than leading, shortens timelines by allowing parallel work on construction and safety analysis. He noted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recent changes are a 'huge unlock' for nuclear, compressing permitting and attracting private capital. He also highlighted an opportunity to rebuild domestic isotope production, using fuel recycling byproducts, to reduce foreign reliance and emulate the speed of the Pentagon's Manhattan Project efforts.
Key takeaways
Oklo's Groves reactor in Texas achieved criticality two days before the interview, marking the fastest privately built reactor on private lands in U.S. history.
DeWitte said industry-led nuclear, with government support, will scale fast enough to meet rising power demand from AI, manufacturing, and appliances.
Oklo plans to expand isotope production domestically, using fuel recycling byproducts, to reduce foreign reliance.
DeWitte expressed confidence nuclear will 'scale in an exciting way,' citing record-speed construction.
Nuclear power seeing a major comeback in America. One company leading the demand is Oklo, the advanced nuclear technology company—smaller reactors designed to provide reliable power for critical energy needs. The company announcing its first reactor in Texas has reached criticality, meaning it has achieved controlled, self-sustained nuclear chain reaction. It is part of the Energy Department's reactor pilot program aiming to accelerate development of next-generation nuclear tech. Jacob Dewitte says the biggest achievement is not just one reactor reaching criticality, but that it can scale future nuclear projects faster. Joining me in a Fox Business exclusive is co-founder and CEO of Oklo, Jacob Dewitte.
Your company sits in the middle of this newfound growth story of nuclear technology. What have you been watching in terms of energy demand and the impact on nuclear potential?
We are in this amazing time. Demand from a number of different places—the headline grabber is AI, and we are behind in powering it from a security perspective. Not to mention amazing things AI can do for everyone, but that's not the only variable. We bring in better appliances and better utilities, and the other big sleeper coming is the fact that we are bringing manufacturing back to this country. Electricity went with them 24/7. The baseload supply of energy, those jobs coming back—all of those are providing a huge uptick in energy demand. That is why the president said we need to build more nuclear power plants. We are unleashing innovation to match that.
The president wants all hands on deck. All this demand—demand has been surging from advanced manufacturing. Backing new programs to accelerate advanced reactor development and bring next-generation nuclear technology online faster. You said the Groves project provides a roadmap showing how private companies and federal support can move these projects along. Christopher Wright says we are entering a new era with nuclear technology playing a bigger role at home. Watch this.
Long-term and strategic, they are about energy and partnership. America is leader of this technology, launching a nuclear renaissance. We will hear about nuclear technology being spread around the world.
