Putin welcomed Modi on the eve of the SCO Summit, emphasizing the strengthening of Russian-Indian relations under a 'specially privileged partnership.' He noted positive trade momentum, with significant growth in the first half of the year, and highlighted humanitarian cooperation, including 40,000 Indian students in Russia and a 16% rise in tourist flows. Putin mentioned the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September and the recent Intergovernmental Commission session in Moscow. He stressed coordination at the UN, BRICS, G20, and SCO. Modi responded by recalling Putin's successful visit to India, supporting peace efforts in Ukraine, and expressing eagerness for Putin's visit to India for the BRICS Summit.
Key takeaways
Russian-Indian relations are strengthening on the basis of a specially privileged partnership.
40,000 Indian students are currently studying in Russia.
Mutual tourist flows between Russia and India have grown by 16%.
Putin confirmed preparations for the BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September.
Distinguished Prime Minister, dear friends, I am glad to meet you again. This time, our meeting is taking place on the eve of the SCO Summit. The SCO continues to work in the interests of the Global East and South; it facilitates social and economic development, cultural development of the regions, and it helps to shape a just, multipolar world order. I would like to note with satisfaction the following thing, namely that Russian-Indian relations continue to get strengthened on the basis of the principles of the specially privileged partnership.
Distinguished Prime Minister, of course, you pay special attention to Russian-Indian relations, and business-like and kind relations—friendly relations—have been established between us, and I am very grateful to you for that. Recently, your Foreign Minister, Mr. Jaishankar, visited Moscow. We are celebrating the anniversary of our diplomatic relations, and of course we are doing serious preparations for the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September. Our trade and economic cooperation is demonstrating generally positive momentum. Last year we saw a little increase, but in the first half of the year, it grew significantly. Last week, Moscow hosted the session of the Intergovernmental Commission, which also demonstrated good results.
I would also like to say a couple of words about our humanitarian cooperation. I would like to note India is among the top countries in terms of its students in Russia. In recent years, this figure has grown several times, and it amounts to 40,000 students now. We regularly hold cultural festivals of India and Russia; 2027 will see another round of the festivals in India. We also have active mutual tourist flows; we have seen 16% growth. We closely coordinate efforts at the United Nations, at BRICS, the G20, and the SCO. And today, we have a good chance to compare our notes and align our future cooperation when it comes to the development of Russian-Indian relations.
