Alex Bouaziz, CEO and co-founder of Deel, discussed the company's AI-first product strategy, which emerged from internal use and led to 100% automation of payments, up from 96%, within three weeks. He detailed a 'founder mode' approach, taking one engineer to build the product from a fresh perspective. Bouaziz endorsed Brian Armstrong's views on organizational change, including a 1:15 IC-to-manager ratio and 'teams of one,' and introduced a new role called 'agent operations.' He described Deel's token allocation strategy, with 87% of the organization using the product, and the internal app store 'Nexus.' He expressed skepticism about token usage as a productivity metric, noting Anthropic and OpenAI lack detailed analytics. He concluded that he wouldn't change anything from the past seven years, though he'd rebuild at a different pace with AI knowledge.

Alex, CEO and co-founder of Deel, coming on the show, The European Technology Network. How was the drive?
Alex Bouaziz 0:10 ↗
I know, right? I was like, I was sure I'm going to be late, man, and I'm being on time. Well, thank you for having me, guys. I'm excited to be here.

Let's go. Now, we're excited to have you. Thanks so much for joining us. Where do we even start? Usually we ask guests to introduce themselves, but I'm pretty sure our viewers know who you are. Maybe give us like a temperature update on what you guys have announced recently. I think about four things that we want to cover. In fact, can I just pick the one that I'm most interested in first? Can we just start with that?
Alex Bouaziz 0:39 ↗
I'm just happy to be here.
Host 0:40 ↗
Okay, amazing. So, if we can, I'd love to talk about—and I want to pronounce this correctly—Akamai. Yeah?
Alex Bouaziz 0:48 ↗
Yeah.
Host 0:49 ↗
Okay, yeah. Let's start with this cuz this is, I think this is very relevant now. It looks super interesting, and I've got a bunch of questions about that specifically, yeah.
Alex Bouaziz 0:58 ↗
Well, first of all, I appreciate you guys having me on. What you guys want to follow in, like you're building something amazing, so it's very cool what you guys are doing. Yeah, I mean, you know, the quick background on Deel is we built global payroll and global HR for companies: 45,000 customers from small companies to very large companies. And we can do basically everything end-to-end, from running payroll in one country to being a full-stack HR and payroll system. And in those seven years—we're now seven years old as a business, which is crazy—we've kind of learned the best part of our business is the fact that we have to do a lot of manual stuff. Yeah, I mean, you know, 1,500 different bank accounts, employing people in like 150-plus countries, payroll—all of those things are super, super manual. And I think like every single company out there, AI kind of came as a breakthrough where you're like, "Wow, like you can automate so many things."
And we spent a lot of time kind of looking at it from our own perspective. And we had a small breakthrough internal use, which was pretty cool. So being a very operational company, what if we build a system that enabled anyone at the company to be able to automate things end-to-end, but with an AI-first approach? And it's been mind-blowing. Like, it's all I've been doing actually for the last two months, which is really fun. It's really changing how fundamentally we build our company. And we decided that instead of keeping it just for ourselves, you know, we think it can actually be a very cool standalone product that people can go out and use. So the TL;DR is basically you can go and build an agent in a couple of minutes that connects to the different tools that you have around you, learns from the different operational tasks that you actually are doing on a daily basis, on a weekly basis, and just gets you to do things that you just couldn't do before.
If you just take our payments, like we're moving over $2-plus billion a month across 1,500 different bank accounts. We spent years getting through the deterministic code like 0.1% more or 0.3% more, and kind of getting to the limit of like the 96% automation. And in the span of like three weeks since building that product—which took us quite a bit of time—we were able to get to 100% automation, which is insane.
Host 3:09 ↗
Yeah, that's really... I want to ask a question about how it all kind of came about, because you kind of touched on it a little bit. But you know, it was a kind of thing that you guys launched internally first, or like kind of it was a product that you guys were using internally, and then you started to say, "Hey, yeah, let's go externally and commercialize this." Is that right? And is that a thing that you guys do? You know, is that a workflow that you guys are thinking when you are launching new products: you use it internally first?
