📅 Sep 30, 2026 Times Of India 10 MIN 2658 VIEWS 24 SEGMENTS · 6 SPEAKERS
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney brushed off Donald Trump’s latest trade-war taunt with a laugh after being asked about the U.S. president’s claim that Canada would soon come back, apologize and remove its tariffs. Carney initially responded: “I take note of both comments… no response to either,” before adding that Canada remains ready to negotiate in good faith — but only on terms that respect both countries’ sovereignty. #MarkCarney #DonaldTrump #Canada #Trump #CanadaUS #TradeWar #Tariffs #USCanada #CanadianPolitics #uscanadatrade Times Of India (TOI) Is The Largest Selling English Da...

Mark Carney, in a September 30, 2026 appearance, responded to President Trump's taunt that Canada would apologize and eliminate tariffs within three to four weeks, and to Peter Navarro's comment telling Canadians to leave Washington, by saying he took note of both comments and gave no response to either. He pivoted to announce over $3 billion in ocean conservation investments, part of a broader ocean strategy with two more pillars to come, ahead of the 12th Our Ocean Conference in May. On LNG Canada's phase two, he said the proponents will decide on steel sourcing over the next five to six years, with opportunities to buy Canadian steel. He declined to commit to an investigation into Havana syndrome until briefed on new information. He said the government is considering AI liability issues in Parliament. On trade, he said Canada stands ready to negotiate in good faith, never rules out escalation, and emphasized Canada's reliability as a partner.

President Trump said yesterday he thinks Canada will apologize in the next three to four weeks and say, "We're going to get rid of all the tariffs." Mr. Navarro today told Canadians lobbying in Washington to get the hell out of the country. What do you say in response to this?
Mark Carney 0:18 ↗
I take note of both comments. How's that? No response to either.
The action we're taking today will advance Canada's position as a global leader in ocean protection. Getting ocean protection right is the prerequisite for sustainable growth. With today's measures, our government is now investing more than $3 billion in ocean conservation. In the coming months, we'll release the other two pillars of Canada's ocean strategy, namely our plans to secure our waters and, secondly, to build our ocean economy. And all this work will accelerate as we prepare to welcome the world for the 12th Our Ocean Conference in May, convening governments, Indigenous leaders, scientists, and coastal communities to turn ambition into concrete action for ocean protection and sustainable use.
Let me end at the beginning. Let me end at our beginning. First, water. The waves, the waters, a lot of waves today, a lot of light waves. The waves behind me, the waters behind me, sustain life and are a gateway for the exchange of trade, of people, and ideas. They've shaped the Canada we know today. And how we treat them will shape our future. Canada is building big again. And we're doing so to strengthen our shared prosperity, to reinforce our sovereignty, and to carry us further than ever before. But the further we reach, the greater is our responsibility to protect what sustains us. We inherited these oceans, and it's our obligation to pass them on better than we found them. And so we will. Canada is an ocean nation that will protect our fresh waters. Thank you very much. Merci beaucoup.

Merci, Monsieur le Premier Ministre. Thank you, Prime Minister. We'll now turn to questions. And on my left, only questions. Première question. First question.
Georgie Smyth 2:37 ↗
Georgie Smyth, CBC. Is phase two of LNG Canada going to be built with Chinese steel like phase one, or will it be built with Canadian steel?
Mark Carney 2:47 ↗
It's a great question for the proponents of phase two. They've taken their first investment decision. The process runs for the next five to six years. I'll leave it to them on the precise timing in the early 2030s when it's expected to be operational. There will be full opportunities to buy Canadian steel, and we'll continue to invest in the Canadian steel industry to make sure that's the case, but it'll be for them to decide.

Follow-up. President Trump said yesterday he thinks Canada will apologize in the next three to four weeks and say, "We're going to get rid of all the tariffs." Mr. Navarro today told Canadians lobbying in Washington to get the hell out of the country. What do you say in response to this?
Mark Carney 3:30 ↗
I take note of both comments. How's that? No response to either.
Moderator 3:39 ↗
Next question.
Mark Carney 3:40 ↗
Okay, I'll just say this on trade. It continues to be the case that Canada stands ready to negotiate in good faith what is a mutually advantageous trade arrangement that respects both our countries' sovereignty.
Well, the first is the announcement at the Davie shipyard, which is the biggest investment in shipbuilding in Quebec's history, was made prior to the start of the campaign, and it's natural that, of course, I would be there and other officials would be there. Today's announcement, the timing of it, was determined by the five private-sector partners for LNG 2. The Canadian government made major efforts over the course of the last year to get to this point, to help them get to this decision point for what is the second-largest private-sector investment in Canadian history. So it's an enormous investment. And the final point that I made was that I think that we're able to do multiple things at one time. We have to protect as we build, and that the ocean conservation efforts that we're taking today, as part of a much bigger nature strategy, and what will follow from this, will be bigger determinants for future generations of this country. Thank you.
