What Claudia Sheinbaum said

Claudia Sheinbaum rejected a US media survey claiming most Mexicans would support foreign intervention, calling it false and contradictory to Mexico's nationalist sentiment. She grounded this in Mexican history, citing independence in 1821, the Plan of Iguala, and a legacy of resisting foreign interventions including the Pastry War, US territorial loss, and the 1914 US intervention. Responding to the US government's drug report on Mexico, she demanded a parallel report on US drug consumption, opioids, money laundering, and weapons flows from the US into Mexico. She defended Mexico's own actions, citing arrests of municipal officials and a case of DEA agents who allegedly allowed fentanyl trafficking in New Mexico. Sheinsbaum insisted Mexico gives daily public accounting and does not need to be judged externally, while highlighting the US government's failure to address its domestic drug crisis and cartel activity.

Key takeaways

  3. She demanded the US government report on its own drug consumption, money laundering, and weapons trafficking into Mexico.
  4. She cited a case of DEA agents allegedly allowing fentanyl sales in New Mexico.
  5. Mexico provides daily public accountability and acts against organized crime, including municipal officials.

I also have a question. I don't know if I can ask it since it doesn't really have much to do with the topic. Despite the fact that there is a survey, and I say survey in quotation marks, which some outlets began repeating, claiming that the majority of Mexicans would support a foreign intervention in Mexico, that contrasts sharply with what we saw on the night of the Grito. There were more than 300 events around the world with many Mexican embassies having packed public squares. There was even a survey by the polling director at El Financiero that showed the exact opposite. It said the majority of people support cooperation but never intervention. So reality seems to clash somewhat with this supposed survey.
