Andy Burnham, in his first Labour Party conference speech as prime minister, declared a break with the past 40 years of policy, citing de-industrialization, deregulation, privatization, austerity, and Brexit as failures. He announced a 10-year plan for Britain focused on public control of essentials: a council house building program led by Angela Rayner, reform of right to buy, and powers for councils to acquire poor-quality rented homes. He confirmed a strengthened water bill to repeal the ban on public ownership, a national energy plan with a Great British Grid, and removal of VAT from electricity bills. He pledged a National Care Service, funded by adjusting the state pension triple lock in April 2030, and a new national commission on electoral reform. He acknowledged Brexit's harm and promised to lay out options for a long-term EU relationship.

Hi everyone, I'm Nadia. I'm from Hindley near Wigan. I'm not used to doing these type of things, so please be patient. But if it weren't for Andy Burnham, I really wouldn't be here today. And I mean really wouldn't be here. I know people say things like that, but I really wouldn't be here. A couple of weeks after my fourth birthday, my dad kidnapped me and took me to Libya. My mom was left at home in Wigan beside herself with worry and terrified about what might be happening to me. Months and years passed for me without my mom. Sometimes at night, I'd look outside my bedroom window in Libya and tell the stars to please tell mommy where my daddy is hiding me. I started to think my mom has just forgotten about me. What I didn't know was she was spending every moment trying to find me, moving to Libya to search for me. But everywhere she went, doors were slammed in her face. People told her it was too difficult, too hopeless to bring me back. Then one day, my nan and granddad went to the local MP, Andy Burnham. From that meeting, things started to change. Andy flew to Libya and met mom. There, he made a promise that he'll do everything in his power to bring me home. And Andy kept that promise. Here I am.
That was 17 years ago now. 17 years of me and my mom have spent time together because of his determination. He gave my mom hope when things felt hopeless. He got things done when others claimed it was impossible. So me and my mom couldn't be more happy that he is now our new prime minister. I feel very lucky today.
I feel very lucky to be here today. I'm very proud to be introducing our new now prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham. But first, let's watch the new video.

It's difficult to envision when you're growing up that one of your mates might become the prime minister of the country. The way he's hit the ground running.

People come up to me in the street every day saying, "Go on, Andy."
