President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the National Reforestation Day, to be held annually, starting August 9, 2026, with the goal of involving all states, municipalities, and citizens. She highlighted the Sowing Life program as unique worldwide, with 12 million trees planted and 1 million hectares reforested over 8 years, involving over 400,000 sowers. She responded to questions on the intense El Niño phenomenon, the visit of the Pope, and criticism of the audience rights law, clarifying it is not censorship but requires media to have an ombudsman and code of ethics. She also discussed the exaggerated INE election budget request, denied any threats to the Chihuahua governor, and addressed the Sowing Life technicians' social security situation.

Key takeaways

  1. National Reforestation Day will be held annually, with the first on August 9, 2026, aiming to plant over 6.6 million trees across 32,000 hectares.
  2. Sowing Life program is unique globally, with 12 million trees planted and 1 million hectares reforested in 8 years by over 400,000 sowers.
  3. Sheinbaum rejected INE's request for 15,000 million pesos more than the 2024 election, saying it should cost the same as 2024.
  4. The audience rights law is not censorship; media must have an ombudsman and make their code of ethics public, not the State defining truth.
  5. She denied threats to the Chihuahua governor, noting an investigation file related to CIA agents, not a political matter.

  1. 15:30Why is it important to forest?
  2. 18:47This plant, like a sour cherry, was no longer seen in the city and they gave it to us, and today Corena has it, and we thank Corena very much for the loan of these plants. Which agencies are involved?
  3. 33:50... you know it perfectly well, but the most important thing is that we are ready and set for your initiative so that we can meet the goal and put our grain of sand in this initiative of the President throughout the country. Ready, President?
  4. 54:26Isn't it contradictory because your government has defended this sector?
  5. 55:18Would you make a call to the councilors to reduce this figure?
  6. 56:18... a few days ago a column was published where it was made known that in a meeting you had with businessmen, they expressed their concern about the possible arrival of Lenia Batres as president of the court. Was this information real?
  7. 1:23:33And besides, apart from, let's say, from my point of view, what is important?
  8. 1:30:43Can you give me your opinion, Madam President?

Claudia Sheinbaum 6:30 ↗
Good morning. We are very... forest. How are you? Greetings to the forest fighters. Thank you very much for all your work. With us are Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources; Columba López, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development; Leticia Ramírez, Secretary of Welfare; and Sergio Graf, Director General of the National Forestry Commission. And at a distance are the 32 entities of the Republic, governors and the head of government. Because this Sunday we are going to hold a National Reforestation Day. The secretaries will give the details. The goal is for this day to be held every year, not only in 2026, but from now on we set aside one day a year for all of us to reforest. It is a national effort where governors, the head of government, municipalities, the government of Mexico, and many volunteers are part of this National Reforestation Day. Before that, if you allow it, since it is Wednesday of Housing, we will quickly go to the Wednesday of Housing link in Querétaro, and then we will give the floor to Alicia, Columba, Leticia, and some of the governors who join us at a distance. Go ahead, Governor Curi.
Mauricio Curi 8:34 ↗
President, how are you? Good morning. I am very grateful to you and from my heart, thank you very much for this great program that helps so many families here in Querétaro, in San Juan del Río. I am with the director of Infonavit, with Secretary Ena, and here with this family, a family of a hardworking woman moving forward, Tatiana, with her three daughters, with Geraldín, with Kenia, and with Samantha. And the truth is, it is a before and after for them, and I truly thank you infinitely for this program, which, without a doubt, President, is changing the reality of many, many families. Just my gratitude and my respect, President. A big hug and truly, thank you very much.
Claudia Sheinbaum 9:17 ↗
Thank you, Mauricio. Thank you very much.
Ena Vega 9:20 ↗
Good morning, President. Indeed, we are in this beautiful state accompanying Engineer Octavio Romero and with the hospitality of the governor of Querétaro. We are with a family of women, President, with Tatiana, her three daughters, Tatiana's mother, and the truth is that the look of satisfaction and joy on all of them is impressive. And well, I will address the data related to the housing goal. This is the 27th session of Wednesday of Housing. With this entity, we are going to cover 21 states of the Republic in these deliveries. We are doing well in Querétaro; we already have 16,740 homes in process, which means 35% of the goal of 48,500. Nine projects are in process, which represent these 16,740. The total investment over the six years will be 29,100 million pesos. Querétaro is doing well with the support of the governor, of the municipal presidents, and without a problem we will reach the goal, President. Thank you.
Claudia Sheinbaum 10:42 ↗
That's great. Octavio.
Octavio Romero 10:44 ↗
President, good morning from San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Here we are in the Infonavit Prados de San Juan housing development. We are accompanied by Governor Mauricio Curi, Secretary Edna Vega, and the beneficiary Tania Esmeralda Vega Romero. President, to inform you, we already have 112 housing developments where we are delivering homes in the country. Of these, 39 are already 100% sold out. We have already placed more than 33,000 homes among the beneficiaries, and this month of August we are going to open 14 more developments in different states of the country. Here in this development called Prados de San Juan, 1,494 homes are being built, and today we are going to hand over the keys to 126 families, although 400 of these homes have already been placed. President, here in Querétaro the goal is to build 40,000 homes. We already have 16,000 contracted. In the coming days and weeks we are going to contract 20,000 more. With this we are going to reach more than 36,000 homes, which is 90% of the goal. Without a doubt, here in Querétaro it is feasible to exceed this goal. That is why we thank the mayor of San Juan del Río, Roberto Carlos Cabrera Valencia, for all the support he has given us here in this development. We are with Tania Esmeralda Vega and her three daughters, Geraldín, Samantha, and Esmeralda. And if you allow us, President, we would like to hand over her home to her.
Claudia Sheinbaum 12:52 ↗
Go ahead. Congratulations, Tatiana. Congratulations to all your daughters.
Tatiana Vega 12:56 ↗
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Claudia Sheinbaum 13:06 ↗
Let's see, with the key. Invite us.
Tatiana Vega 13:10 ↗
Well, come in, I invite you to see it. This is my house.
Please, please. Well, I want to take this opportunity to thank this program, which now offers us the facility to be able to have an asset. Before it was more difficult. A long time ago I was looking for a transfer to be able to give my daughters a home, and it was very difficult for me. I didn't complete it, I didn't have enough, and I entered the Infonavit application and saw the facility there was now to be able to have your home, and I signed up, I submitted my papers, I said, 'Either way, I have nothing to lose.' But it was truly very easy, the process was very agile, and thanks to God and this program, now I have a home for my daughters, which we have truly struggled a lot for. There have been many moves. We have traveled practically our entire municipality, and now it is very gratifying, it is very emotional, it is an achievement that is for them and for them. And I truly want to thank all of you, you, Madam President, because the truth is that now it is possible. Trust, do your paperwork, you can have your home.
Claudia Sheinbaum 14:48 ↗
Do you want to say, what are your daughters' names, Tatiana?
Tatiana Vega 14:51 ↗
Kenia.
Claudia Sheinbaum 14:53 ↗
Uh-huh.
Tatiana Vega 14:53 ↗
Samantha and Nailea. And today my mother accompanies me.
Claudia Sheinbaum 14:58 ↗
Nice to meet you. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you very much and thank you for your effort. Because it is because of your effort.
Tatiana Vega 15:06 ↗
Thank you.
Claudia Sheinbaum 15:07 ↗
Thank you. Good morning. Thank you very much, Governor. We expect you on Sunday at the National Reforestation Day.
Mauricio Curi 15:15 ↗
Delighted, President. Thank you very much. Right now I'm going to the other event to be there too. Thank you very much.
Claudia Sheinbaum 15:20 ↗
Thank you. Thank you, Mauricio. Thank you all. Well, now we go. Alicia.
Alicia Bárcena 15:30 ↗
With your permission, Madam President. Good morning to all of you. It is a pleasure to present the reforestation day and I greet with great affection Sergio Graf, our dear commissioner of CONAFOR, of course Leti Ramírez and Columba. We have made a trio, if they pass us the first one and lend me a microphone because I always speak from here, I don't like to give it to... So what I want to explain is why it is so important to restore. First, because 70% of our territory has forest cover, whether it is scrubland, jungles, forests, mangroves. 70% is forest, 12% of global biodiversity is in Mexico, and it also corresponds because the Nearctic zone coexists with the Neotropical. So that's why we have forests of all kinds and forest ecosystems. And notice that 60% of forest ecosystems are on communal or ejido lands. That's why it is so important to involve communities. But we have very big challenges. First, we have 203,000, almost 204,000 hectares a year that are deforested for thousands of reasons: for cattle ranching, because buildings or hotels are built. So there is a deforestation issue. The second is forest fires. This year we have done well, President. Tlalo has helped us a lot, and therefore, but normally we have almost 846,000 hectares affected by forest fires and 62,000 hectares have been affected by pests, by diseases, right? And well, of course, the biggest challenge we have today in Mexico is illegal logging, and we are addressing it with several secretariats and above all with the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection. Why is it important to forest? Because the truth is the water cycle depends on forests. Second, because it helps us regenerate soils. Third, because we strengthen the forest economy. 24% of GDP is the forest economy, boards, etc., things produced in communities, promoting green infrastructure in cities. We all want trees in cities, it is urgent. And productive options in forests, jungles, and mangroves such as regenerative ranching, moving from extensive to regenerative, and it helps us mitigate climate change that affects us so much. So this great restoration day has involved, and we are truly three women, and I thank Columba López and Leti Ramírez very much because we have organized with communities, institutions, financing, with the states to make the entire value chain. That is, Madam President, why this National Reforestation Day is so important.
Claudia Sheinbaum 18:43 ↗
Thank you very much, Alicia. Go ahead, Columba.
Columba López 18:47 ↗
Here it is, here it is. Good morning to all of you. Well, President, to inform you that we are going to be working on the reforestation day in 32 states, in 621 municipalities, 1,632 agrarian nuclei, 32,000 hectares. We are going to plant, just that day we are going to plant more than 6.6 million trees and plants. 235,997 people are going to participate, and we are also going to do a seeding with drones, which we brought here, they are here, and we have a very cool implementation that CONALEP is working on, where we will be able to do the overflight. Right now we are going to show it. There go the pelleted seeds. Explain what pel... Ah, well, the seeds are given a substrate, they are given a little soil with certain fertilizers. It is very well protected so that when they fall to the ground they can emerge safely. Something else that protects us is that the squirrels or some field animals don't take them, because when we did the first tests a few years ago, the seeds were lost there. Look. So, well, we are going to work with the 32 governors of the states with CONAFOR sowing life, and we are also going to be participating in protected natural areas. Here we brought emblematic plants from the different ecosystems. We brought from forest, jungle, tropical and desert so that you could get to know them. This is the type of plants. We brought a cosmos, and that cosmos we rescued in the conservation soil of Mexico City. This plant, like a sour cherry, was no longer seen in the city and they gave it to us, and today Corena has it, and we thank Corena very much for the loan of these plants. Which agencies are involved? SEMARNAT is here, Welfare is here, Agriculture is here, SEDENA is participating very actively, SEMAR, servants of the nation, INJUBE, and we have collaboration with research centers, universities, organizations where we will be impacting in different temperate forests, cloud forests, humid jungles, dry jungles, scrublands, grasslands, mangroves, 37 protected natural areas where we will be, and areas destined for voluntary conservation in 17. We have the great challenge from now to 2030 of planting, we are going to be reforesting and conserving 100 million plants and trees throughout Mexico. That is our great challenge. And well, here we are at your service.
Leticia Ramírez 22:11 ↗
With your permission, President. Good morning to all of you. It is my turn to tell you that we are very, very happy about this National Reforestation Day because on August 9th we will be participating, as was already said here, more than 235,000 people. And the important thing is that it is an effort by the government of the Republic with the different areas, fundamentally, and here we make a recognition to the sowers of life, more than 417,000 producers. A large part of the plants that are going to be sown come from the sowers of life, and the young people building the future will also be there, the servants of education, the fertilizer producers, the harvesters of sovereignty, the producers for welfare, food for welfare, with CONAFOR, with CONJO, the participation of the Secretary of Defense, of the Secretary of the Navy, because we say something very important, the most important thing for us is that collective participation allows the reconstruction of the social fabric, and we are all inviting you to be attentive, to spread the importance of the commitment and the defense of nature for future generations. That is why on August 9th we will demonstrate the love we have for the earth, and we know that caring for nature is also building welfare. Thank you very much.
Claudia Sheinbaum 23:48 ↗
Columba, why don't you mention from Sowing Life how many plants are sown each year of fruit and timber trees apart from this? Thank you.
Columba López 23:59 ↗
Well, in Sowing Life we are in 21 ecosystems. In these different ecosystems we manage three types of strata. The forest stratum, where mahogany and some plants are sown, which are known as fine woods. We have a large quantity there, they are already planted right now. This year we are going to reforest 430,000 in different areas, mainly in the Michoacán and Guerrero area for the justice plans where we are acting, which is basically the part of the Purépecha people and the Michoacán plan. Another part where we have commercial plants or the fruit part, where there is cocoa, coffee, papaya, soursop, we have almost, we have 15 crops, in these 15 crops of greater extent, approximately 200,000 plants are sown each year, and still in each of the nurseries we are having 300 million plants in total to be able to be supplying those that due to some natural disaster have some damage or if we have some pest, disease, we have to replace, water stress. We have enough plants to be replacing, and these are the productive ones, the more than 417,000 sowers and producers who participate always have this plant and can also act on a larger surface, since some donate plants to their municipalities, donate plants to the states, and there is also a great combination of communities that are growing through Sowing Life in these plantations. And something else important that Sowing Life has right now, which is in the milpa area, is the introduction also of the food that we have linked to this milpa, and we have there the medicinal and aromatic plants that also form part of the gastronomy of our indigenous peoples, but also of medicine. So, in total in Sowing Life, there are 300 million plants that are cultivated annually and of different strata. Thank you.
Claudia Sheinbaum 26:37 ↗
Thank you. Let's go to the link with the 32 governors, governors, head of government. Thank you very much for being with us, all of you. We are going to give the floor to some of you if you think so, and if anyone else wants to comment, of course the microphone is open for everyone in the north. Alfonso Durazo.
Alfonso Durazo 27:06 ↗
Thank you, dearest President. We greet you with the recognition and commitment of always. I greet Alicia, Columba, Leti, Sergio, President, an extraordinary team. These are times of women, but they are extraordinary women. It was a great pleasure to team up with them. I reiterate, President, that we join with a great commitment to this National Reforestation Day. To tell you that this comes at an ideal moment for the state of Sonora. We are coming out of a drought of more than three years, President, where we lost a good part of our forest heritage. We have been working in 13 municipalities, the most affected in the state of Sonora, but this initiative comes to us at the ideal moment and represents a breath of fresh air for this effort we are making to recover the lost forest heritage. I am not exaggerating, President, if I tell you that in these past three years we lived a drought of biblical proportions. The emblematic part we are recovering is the La Sauceda forest, which is 40 hectares located in the heart of Hermosillo. It was a place through which all Sonoran families paraded with their children, but it was abandoned. We are rescuing it. We have already planted 11,200 native species trees there. I must recognize here our dearest Alicia Bárcena, who accompanied us to plant the first tree of this rescue process. To this park we have added, President, 170 adjacent hectares that now integrate a set of 210 hectares in which we want to convert not only into a lung of the city, but into a forest of Chapultepec at the level of Mexico City. Well, President, we reiterate our commitment to this initiative, to this National Reforestation Day that will allow us to recover part of the forest heritage lost in these past years. Thank you. Greetings also to my fellow governors. A hug.
Claudia Sheinbaum 30:07 ↗
Thank you very much, Alfonso. Let's go to Aguascalientes. Governor.
Gobernadora de Aguascalientes 30:14 ↗
Good morning, President. Good morning. I greet you and all those who today watch us, listen to us with great affection. From Aguascalientes we team up to protect our environment. We are very happy to join this invitation from the President of Mexico so that this Sunday, August 9th, we participate in the National Reforestation Day. In Aguascalientes, reforestation will be in Clavellinas, in the municipality of Asientos, to sow life and contribute to the recovery of our ecosystems. Each tree we plant strengthens our soils, favors the recharge of aquifers, and helps build a cleaner and greener state. In Aguascalientes, this commitment is already yielding results with the state campaign 'Strong Trees, Giant Footprints.' We have promoted the planting of more than 347,000 trees in 260 reforestation days. We are advancing in the protection of natural areas and permanent environmental conservation actions. We invite everyone to continue making a future with more trees, awareness, and citizen participation in Aguascalientes and throughout Mexico. Thank you, President, for caring for the environment.
Claudia Sheinbaum 31:32 ↗
Thank you. Thank you, Governor. Let's go to Jalisco with Pablo Lemos.
Pablo Lemos 31:39 ↗
President, good morning. A very cordial greeting to you from the state of Jalisco, and well, very happy to join this national reforestation campaign. I want to inform you, President, that we are the fourth state with the greatest biodiversity in all of Mexico. Below Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Veracruz comes Jalisco. We have 37 protected natural areas in the state and we have the largest lake in all of Mexico, which is Lake Chapala. Jalisco stands out for having 53% of the bird species that inhabit the entire national territory, and five of our urban forests have a global Green Flag Award certification from last year. This year, President, just in the campaign next Sunday, which in Jalisco will be in Atemajac de Brizuela, we are going to plant 10,000 new trees. The state campaign that adds to the federal one, which is very important on the state level by the government of Jalisco, this year we are going to plant 250,000 new trees. The priority regions will be the Sierra de Tapalpa, the Sierra de Amula, the Sierra del Tigre, the Western Sierra, the southern coast, the southern zone, the central zone, and a territory you know very well, a forest that is very important for Jalisco and for the Guadalajara metropolitan area, the Bosque de la Primavera, which without a doubt will be a priority in the annual reforestation campaign. Thank you, President, for joining this great effort and always count on Jalisco.
Claudia Sheinbaum 33:38 ↗
Thank you very much, Governor. Let's go to Durango. We are very plural here, everyone. It is a joint, unitary effort. Go ahead, Durango. Esteban.
Esteban Villegas 33:50 ↗
President, good morning to all of you, to the governors, to the secretaries, to Secretary Columba, to Secretary Leti, to Secretary Bárcena, with whom we are working very coordinated, to all the sowers of life who have put in a lot of effort, and to the ejidatarios without whom it would be practically impossible to do all this reforestation work. Let us remember, President, that Durango is the first certified forest reserve in the entire country, of this sierra that produces water here in several watersheds, much or most of the water produced in Durango goes to Sinaloa, a part to Chihuahua, a part to Nayarit, and a large part to the entire Comarca Lagunera, both Durango and Coahuila. So it is the most important forest reserve. We have 9.1 million certified forest hectares and we are the state with the most carbon capture projects, which the ejidos have also been entering into these projects that I believe are important to give a different meaning and better care to our forest. Just as you know, like in Sonora, in the north we had a very complex drought. This year we have done very well in terms of forest fires. The rains have allowed us not to have as many, but we are ready and prepared for this initiative. We are going to exceed the goal by far. The idea is in Durango to plant more than 500,000 and reach 1 million plants among all the ejidos. We are already organizing very well here to continue strengthening this wealth, this diversity we have of climates, of valleys, of sierra, of desert, of tropical microclimates. Durango is a beautiful state, you know it perfectly well, but the most important thing is that we are ready and set for your initiative so that we can meet the goal and put our grain of sand in this initiative of the President throughout the country. Ready, President? On Sunday we will give you more precise data about exactly what we are going to do in this day on August 9th.
Claudia Sheinbaum 36:14 ↗
Thank you very much, Esteban. Let's go with Delfina, State of Mexico. Delfina Gómez, Governor.
Delfina Gómez 36:21 ↗
Hello, President. Good morning to you, to the secretaries, and to all the media and to those who watch us through the networks. To tell you that we are super prepared for this National Reforestation Day. To tell you that our participation will be with the 125 municipalities because we want to exceed the goal. We, as you have said, want a transversal work, a coordinated work, and for that, in addition to the 125 municipalities, the secretaries who make up the cabinet will also participate, as well as the members of the Peace Table, who are already here with us, which is the National Guard, Navy, what is the Army, as well as the sectors, the educational sector, the health sector, the welfare sector, the farmers' sector, which is very important, our dear ejidatarios, businessmen are also very interested in participating. Because what we want is what you have just achieved with this action, to raise the awareness of our citizens that it is important to care for, preserve, and work for the good of our environment. And this also adds to the actions we have taken as a state government. Right now I want to inform you that with the work that has been done by both the National Guard, Sedena, the Navy, and all the sectors, more than 8,000 hectares have been restored and reforested here in the State of Mexico with an investment of more than 22,000 million pesos, having as beneficiaries 600 nuclei and people, and we have the intention that day by day this goal will increase. There has been a production of 28.5 million plants and more than 30,000 hectares of affected forest areas have been repopulated. Regarding the educational issue, which is also important for us, for our children, is to create the project. The Bosque Escuela project was created, which provides guided visits, practices of forest education and culture. And for this reason, this action that you carry out, dear President, will serve us well to strengthen this State of Mexico that has indeed helped us a lot with the part of the fires that have been minimal, but unfortunately we have the problem of Tlaloc and with this action we will achieve it. Therefore, a greeting from here, State of Mexico, and we are going all out and we are going to exceed the goal. Thank you very much.
Claudia Sheinbaum 38:31 ↗
Thank you, Delfina. Indira, Colima.
Indira Vizcaíno 38:36 ↗
Good morning, dear President, to you, to the dear secretaries who accompany you. Our recognition from Colima and the region we are part of for this initiative is a confirmation of the vision of your government, of your personal vision, of the importance you have given to caring for the environment. Since the transformation governments, there has been a very special impulse with the expansion of protected natural areas or with programs like Sowing Life, which is an example at the international level. That is why we feel very proud to be able to join this, with our participation in this event, in this National Reforestation Day, which means a reaffirmation of the love for our land, of the love for present and future generations through it. In Colima we join this National Reforestation Day this coming Sunday, August 9th, from the municipality of Cuauhtémoc with more than 5 hectares, with more than 5,000 trees that will be planted in this municipality. Thank you very much, President, and congratulations.
Claudia Sheinbaum 39:38 ↗
Thank you, Indira. Anyone else? Any of the governors who want to say a few brief words? Oaxaca.
Salomón Jara Cruz 39:51 ↗
Yes. Ah, well, good morning, President. We greet you from the Bosque del Tequio here in Oaxaca, the natural lung of the metropolitan area of our Oaxaca. We are very happy to join this National Reforestation Day, and it is a pleasure to share with you and with the people of Mexico that in Oaxaca reforestation is a permanent public policy. To inform you that we have 45 nurseries in the state and we are producing 17 million plants and we have already reforested almost 20,000 hectares. This year we are going to reforest 17 million plants, 17,000 hectares, and we are going to join this great day that you are convening, President, this coming Sunday. Thank you very much. We greet you from Oaxaca.
