Hopefully a better tagline than 'I'm a monster,' but...
Well, first of all, I'm really proud to be here today. As an industry, I think this moment is historic and consequential. And I think there are extraordinary benefits to this technology. You can see it in the GDP growth we see. We have to make sure we are addressing the risks. And the President has asked us as an industry to step up. And we want to make sure we're putting out products safely. And as Mark said, we are signing up to a set of processes and controls, like we do in other areas like financial controls in a company. And we are bringing those well-known best practices to the development of artificial intelligence.
Donald Trump 1:26 ↗
You know why? Because they're outstanding people and they don't want anything to go wrong. I mean, the companies are at stake. If something goes wrong, their companies are at stake. They're not going to let that happen. This is going to be all for the good, and it could be nice and safe. And they're really going to be policing each other. And that's the way it works.
Interviewer 1:45 ↗
Mr. President, we're worried about that old job when it comes to AI.
Donald Trump 1:49 ↗
Yeah.
Interviewer 1:49 ↗
And Mr. Musk has spoken about an age of abundance, which sounds lovely. But what about when people...
Donald Trump 1:54 ↗
Elon, I see you back there. What are you doing so far back there? May we hear from them now? What about the future? Elon, go ahead. You can answer that question.
Elon Musk 2:02 ↗
Sorry, the question was about age of abundance?
Interviewer 2:04 ↗
Because people looking at this will be worried, particularly laptop jobs. What are they going to do in the future, Mr. President?
Elon Musk 2:11 ↗
Well, I think it is worth highlighting the positive benefits of AI, which will be SI — pardon me. Super intelligence. I think by far the most likely outcome is an age of abundance where we don't have just a universal basic income, we have universal high income. And yeah, people speak about medical benefits. I think the... but maybe it's worth talking a bit more about that. When you have robots and you have super intelligence, it means that everyone in the world can have better medical care than anyone here, including me. And wouldn't that be wonderful?
Donald Trump 2:51 ↗
Not if they haven't got a job.
Elon Musk 2:53 ↗
Well, jobs are going to change. Jobs have always changed. But being a computer used to be a job. There used to be buildings full of people doing calculations. But now digital computers do those tasks. I don't think anyone is pining to go back and do calculations all day to do bank interest rates, which is what they used to do. So I think we'll see an evolution of roles. And as the President has mentioned, it's not as though unemployment has increased. In fact, there's a tremendous demand for people. So I think the most likely outcome — and it's probably worth looking at the most likely outcome — is one which is incredibly beneficial, and it's a future that, if you could look into the future, it is the future you would want.
Donald Trump 3:39 ↗
Elon and I sat with President Xi the other day, and he will take every data center that we don't want. Do you agree with that? He would love every single one, because you know why? They're smart. They want every data center. They want it because that's great for China. Well, it's great for us, and we're leading by a lot, and we're going to keep it that way. It's going to be very, very safe, and there's self-policing, and there's also group policing, and it's going to be great.
Reporter 4:08 ↗
Mr. President! Mr. President, does Putin want... Question for you, sir. Mr. President, how worried are you about the... How do you envision... Mr. President... Does Putin want peace, sir? Mr. President... Let me ask you a question. Let me ask you a question. Can I ask you a question? Can your industry regulate itself?
Donald Trump 4:57 ↗
You did a great job.
