Steve Eisman discussed the potential for an AI-driven recession, focusing on OpenAI's fragility. He noted that the 10-year yield nearly hit 4.8% and that AI capex accounts for about half of US GDP growth. Eisman argued that OpenAI is the weakest link, citing senior departures, weak financials ($6.7 billion revenue vs. $12.3 billion costs in June quarter), and a flawed B2C strategy. He warned that an OpenAI failure would hit Oracle (50% of its backlog from OpenAI), hyperscalers, banks, and industrials, while safety sectors like healthcare and staples would benefit. He also covered Nvidia's concentration risk (70% of receivables from five customers), Meta's $17 billion settlement, and recommended safety ETFs.
Key takeaways
OpenAI's June quarter revenue was $6.7 billion, up only 18% from March, while costs surged to $12.3 billion, up $3 billion.
Oracle's $600 billion backlog is about 50% from OpenAI, and its stock is down over 50% from its peak on this reliance.
AI capex accounts for about half of the 2% GDP growth projected for 2026, making the economy vulnerable to an AI slowdown.
Nvidia's July 2026 quarter showed revenue growth over 100%, but 70% of its receivables come from just five customers.
OpenAI's advertising ARR of $1 billion is far below its $2.4 billion projection for 2026, signaling weakness.

10-year yield level that nearly triggered a market correction
The 10-year yield almost brushed against 4.8%, and there is no question that at some level of interest rates the market will correct. The entire US economy hinges on the success of AI. The amount being spent is just so large that were it to stop, the economy would go into a recession almost immediately. I think that OpenAI is potentially in trouble. Things are not moving in the right direction. So, I'm starting to think that the demise of OpenAI could push the US into an almost immediate recession. It's not too early to think about the ramifications of OpenAI failing. So, let's think about it.
