Greg Peterson, founder of Machinery Pete, reported a surge in used equipment auction prices since mid-June 2026, driven by strong demand for good-condition, low-hour machinery. He cited record or near-record prices at recent auctions, including a 2017 New Holland TS6140 with 447 hours that sold for $81,000, a 2016 Case IH Steiger 580 Quadtrac with 4,785 hours at $170,000, and three 2022 Case IH 9250 combines bringing $280,000-$290,000. Peterson noted that despite a 19.5% increase in the number of farm machinery auctions, the supply of one-to-three-year-old equipment at auction is down 19.9%, with tractors and planters down 25%. He argued that premium farm retirement and estate sales are commanding a 'double premium' as buyers seek quality used alternatives to expensive new machines. Peterson predicted that if current momentum continues, prices are unlikely to fall sharply later in the year, based on his 36 years of market observation.

Key takeaways

  1. Used equipment auction prices have surged since mid-June 2026, with record or near-record prices for combines and tractors.
  2. Despite a 19.5% increase in machinery auctions, supply of one-to-three-year-old equipment is down 19.9%, supporting prices.
  3. Peterson expects current market momentum to continue through the rest of the year, based on historical patterns.
  4. A 2017 New Holland TS6140 with 447 hours sold for $81,000, the highest hard-cash auction price Peterson has seen.

Welcome to Moving Iron with Casey Seymour and Greg Peterson, the podcast for anyone and everyone involved and interested in the business of ag equipment. If you want to understand what trends and market forces are impacting the price of your iron, you've come to the right place. Buckle up. It's time to move some iron.
Casey Seymour 0:16 ↗
Hello and welcome to the Moving Iron podcast. This is the Moving Iron podcast brought to you by John Deere. I've got Greg 'Machinery Pete' Peterson on to talk about what's happening in the market. Greg, how are you doing today?
Greg Peterson 0:24 ↗
Doing well, Casey. How are you doing?
Casey Seymour 0:26 ↗
Doing good, man. See, you're almost — you flew right past me. You're going so fast. I'm in Laramie.
Greg Peterson 0:31 ↗
Yeah, Laramie, Wyoming. I came out with Mrs. Pete and our oldest daughter and her family moving to Laramie. So I'm excited to help him get settled in here. Beautiful country out here. My goodness. We flew into Denver and drove up, and I was telling you how windy it was, and then you informed me 45 mph winds is just a light breeze up here. So, a lot to learn.
Casey Seymour 0:54 ↗
Light breeze. Light breeze. Yeah, that's — yeah, that Laramie is, you know, I've been in a lot of mountain towns in my life, and rarely do I run into the wind that I run into in that stretch between Laramie and Cheyenne. It's — man, I'll tell you what, it's one of the windiest places I've ever been in my life. So, it's beautiful though. I'll tell you what, you look to the west from Laramie and you see those mountains, and it's actually the highest football field elevation-wise in the country — 7,500 ft. So.
Greg Peterson 1:27 ↗
Yeah, well, I suppose an advantage other teams come into the University of Wyoming, they're all adjusting to the altitude, and the Cowboys just take it to them. Go Pokes, huh?
Casey Seymour 1:35 ↗
I don't know if it is that much of an advantage if you look at the last couple years. So, they've — [laughter] Well, I was going to snap a picture of the stadium. We drove past it last night. I didn't get a closer look, but my dad — my dad's 88. He's a big college football fan, so he'll get a kick out of it. But, and, no, it's a beautiful area. We're really excited for the kids to be out here and looking forward to our visits out here. And, yeah, so I'm coming out this way more, so maybe — shoot, I'm only a couple hours from Scottsbluff. We'll just record Moving Iron now. Machinery Pete and Casey hanging out, huh?
Greg Peterson 2:10 ↗
There you go. Got to do it at the Bear Bottom Grill whenever you're there in Sidney. Get yourself a slice of pizza and a cold beer. Can't beat it.
Casey Seymour 2:17 ↗
Can you get Bear Bottom — can they sponsor the Moving Iron podcast? I mean, we'll give them a nice plug like this all the time. That's good stuff.
Greg Peterson 2:23 ↗
They might, you know, they might someday do that, so, you know.
Casey Seymour 2:26 ↗
We'll do a little Machinery Pete TV filming from the Bear Bottom Grill. That'd be good.
Greg Peterson 2:30 ↗
There you go. Got the live music out there, too, so it's a nice little place. Nice little place.
Casey Seymour 2:36 ↗
All right. I don't know if any of the Machinery Pete audience has seen Machinery Pete on the dance floor. I don't know if you want to see that or not, but — I'd like to see that, Greg. A few slices and a couple beers, who knows what you're going to do, Greg, you know?
Greg Peterson 2:52 ↗
It takes — yes, it takes maybe a couple beers to get rid of my Norwegian roots a little bit and just go for it. But I don't know. This is Casey. She'll get me out there once in a while. We have fun.
Casey Seymour 3:03 ↗
There you go. Well, that's good. Well, we were talking before we started recording about some further auctions that also came through, and you brought — you had a couple of them that I was kind of — I had asked you a couple times to go back and check to make sure it was right, because there were some decent prices out there.
Greg Peterson 3:18 ↗
Yeah, I really think since just after the middle of June, Casey, we've seen good-condition used equipment really producing some eye-popping auction prices. So just in the last week here, I mean, if we go way further west than where we are now, I mean, our friends at Musser Brothers a week ago today, June 23rd, had quite an online auction. I think they called it their Northwest ag equipment auction. And they're pulling equipment from Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming. But I know they set a record on a — it was a 2017 New Holland TS6140 with a loader. It's low hours, only had 447 hours, so we kind of suspect it's going to sell high, but it brought 81,000. That's the highest hard-cash auction price I've ever seen. They also had an interesting price, I thought, on a '16 model Case IH Steiger 580 Quadtrac. Nice rig. 4,785 hours, I think. That did 170.
Casey Seymour 4:18 ↗
Yeah.
Greg Peterson 4:18 ↗
Which I believe is the third-highest auction price I've ever seen on a 580 Quad over 4,500 hours. But it was nice. So again, right now it's all about that condition. If it's low hour, obviously, but then even if it's got more hours, if it's really nice and solid. And then they also had — the combines on that auction really got me. They had three Case IH 9250s, all '22s. The highest-hour one had, I think, 1,333 engine hours and brought 280.
