About James Lico

In April 2020, Lico discussed Fortive's efforts to address the PPE shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that the company's ASP business was using existing hospital sterilization systems to decontaminate N95 masks in 95 minutes, turning on capacity created by reduced elective surgeries. Lico described the process as a local issue, noting that Fortive had authorizations in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and that masks could be sterilized twice after initial use, potentially enabling millions of masks of daily capacity. He emphasized that the company was focused on helping frontline workers. In a 2018 discussion, Lico spoke about innovation at Fortive, describing work with growth accelerator teams to develop new ideas. He said the company aimed to understand customer pain points to create "off the beaten path" solutions and was exploring a centralized "port" to provide shared skills, such as data science, to operating companies while keeping innovation close to customers. Lico acknowledged that innovation was "a little messy" and emphasized the importance of fast-cycle prototyping and experimentation.

You doing? Yeah, real good. Thanks for picking me up. So we're doing these driving rounds, have an opportunity to talk about what's going on while we get lost. You love to complain about my driving. Do you think we can talk and drive, do two things? So what's going on?
You know, I had a great meeting this morning with our growth catalysts, who have all been working with our growth accelerator teams to try to bring new innovations. We're what now on our third quote? We just finished this. What do you think we're learning the most about innovation?
I think one of the things that we're all the most encouraged about is there's an empathy around our customers. As soon as we can really understand what our customers are trying to do and their pain points, it gives us in a way the confidence to do things.
I want you. Is that comfortable for our team? No, no, but we're learning. We're learning. You're now thinking about how we centralize and create some centralized skillsets to get this to the next level. We'll call it the port. You know what's the portal? The vision here is that we can bring the rough accelerator type work out, and we've got in essence an environment to do that. And we're not outsourcing innovation by stretch of the imagination. It's our operating company still are closest to the customer, right? So they've got that knowledge. So if we from the port can bring them the generic stuff, right, they bring the specific stuff. They're a great example of that, Jim. Now science, yeah.
The notion of being it'll create a community where we can get some really talented people together to do some amazing things for the operating company. It's kind of where we're headed with the port. Well, I think we're lost. It won't be the first. You know, did I mention that innovation's a little messy? We're gonna persevere, keep iterating. If we can keep iterating a little bit of fast cycle prototyping and experimentation, but...
