Well, look, I appreciate that. I have to say, I'm not a person who deals with headaches a great deal, and definitely I haven't had any experiences with migraines, but it's hard to believe how many people are impacted by this. Dr. Knauf, I want to begin there. What are some common causes of migraines and headaches?
S
Steven Knauf1:41
Yeah, if you've not experienced this, you are very fortunate. This is something that we see coming through the doors of our clinics really very frequently, and it has a pretty serious impact on the quality of people's lives. It's very debilitating. The causes of headaches or migraines, unfortunately for the patients that experience them, can be a wide variety of things. When it comes to healthcare, a lot of people want to be able to put their finger on something and say, 'This is the thing that's causing this migraine or this headache.' With migraines and headaches, that's sometimes difficult to do. It can be caused by things like genetic predisposition where it just runs in your family. It can be bad or irregular sleep. It can be dietary issues where you're eating or drinking something that's triggering these headaches or migraines. It can be chronic physical or mental stress. I'm sitting right now not really minding my posture, and over time that can put a lot of stress on my neck and upper back that can trigger headaches. It can just be a vast variety of causes for patients, and that creates frustration in trying to determine what's causing it.

Yeah, and I'm so glad you went through that because I think for a lot of people, Dr. Knauf, they may not think about the different things that can cause it. So they may not also think about how chiropractic care ties into it. So how can chiropractic care help alleviate migraines and headaches?
S
Steven Knauf3:28
Chiropractic care is really all about helping your body be better at handling all the kinds of stress that we have. There's physical stress, there's mental stress that we experience, and there's also chemical stress from the things that we eat or expose our bodies to. The idea with chiropractic is to optimize the nervous system, which organizes all of the responses to these stressors in our life to keep our bodies going and healthy. Additionally, long-term chiropractic care can help relieve neck and upper back tension, it can help reduce pain or discomfort or inflammation, and for folks that go through long-term chiropractic care, they may even see a reduction in having to rely on or use over-the-counter medications like Advil or Tylenol. If you can reduce having to use Tylenol or Advil, that has great health benefits to anybody.

Right, exactly. So I think for a lot of our audience, when they're thinking about if they are having problems with headaches, Dr. Knauf, what are some tips to prevent or help headaches once they've started?
S
Steven Knauf4:41
We always recommend, just because of the wide variety of issues that can cause headaches or migraines, talk to a chiropractor. They'll be able to give you some specific tips and tricks based on what you're experiencing. But in general, if you're experiencing headaches or migraines, a couple things that you can try: one, prioritize sleep. I think I've been on this show before talking about the importance of sleep and how basically no one is getting seven or eight hours. That is so important to our overall health. Reduce overstimulation, and that's really through the use of screens—the cell phones that we're on, the laptops, the TVs that we expose ourselves to. All of that can mess with your nervous system, and if you can reduce or eliminate it, that helps settle your body back down into a state where it can start to heal itself. The final one is try to find relaxing activities. Yoga is a great option. Meditation, breath work—which I think we've talked about previously—that's becoming a new popular way to help settle and calm your body down from all the stress that we experience. Try any of those, and that might be helpful to reduce or eliminate the headaches or migraines that you're experiencing.

Well, great tips for us to be able to use for ourselves personally, Dr. Knauf, but also to be able to share with our loved ones. As I mentioned, it's not something that I personally have dealt with, but I do have friends of mine that talk about migraines quite a bit, so this is great to be able to pass on to them. Again, everyone, Dr. Steve Knauf has been our guest from The Joint Chiropractic. Dr. Knauf, let the audience know how can they stay connected with the work that The Joint is doing.
S
Steven Knauf6:23
