About Matthew Doctor

Matthew Doctor, President and CEO of Regis Corporation, spoke at the 2023 ICR Conference about the company's transition from an operator of salons to a fully franchised business model. Doctor stated that he was brought in to lead this shift, describing the company as having "an incredible platform." He noted that after losing $70 million in 2021, the company broke even internally in 2022 by streamlining general and administrative costs, focusing on the balance sheet, and selling proprietary technology. Doctor emphasized that the company's brands offer price points of $20 to $25, which he said makes them attractive during economic downturns. Doctor outlined the company's priorities as retaining and recruiting stylists, shifting customer marketing to improve retention, and rolling out a new technology platform. He said that key performance indicators include customer retention and stylist hours worked per day, and that efforts not related to these metrics are being set aside. Doctor described the company culture as "resilient" and "passionate," and expressed optimism about executing on the strategy in the year ahead, stating that 2022 was a year of stabilization and that the company is at the "beginning stage" of its path forward.

Welcome to another exciting interview here from the sidelines of the ICR 2023 conference in Orlando, Florida. I'm Jared Banks, editor at large of IPO and CorpGov as well as Exec Edge, joined by my guest from The Regis Corporation, CEO Matthew Doctor and CFO Kirsten Zupfer. That's right, I think I've got that right. Okay, perfect. Fantastic. Well, welcome to the program, very nice to see you. Let's start with you, Matt. What attracted you to Regis?
M
Matthew Doctor0:33
Yes, absolutely. I'll give a little bit of a background on the tractors. So I started my career in finance. I was an investment banker at Virginia Morgan to start my career, not even in retailing. I was in the financial institutions group; we covered specialty lenders in crisis. Decided I wanted something completely different, entered the franchising world and have not looked back. I had the unique opportunity of really seeing franchising from both sides. I was part of a larger global franchise award or Iran Global development and franchising performance for the foreign development efforts there. And actually I became a franchisee also, stepped on the other side of the table. Always wanted to be an entrepreneur and got to do that after selling the treatment of large-scale franchise ownership for so long. Became the largest Tim Hortons franchise in the system thanks to that in 2020 and found my way to Regis actually originally as an independent contractor. I was brought in to lead our transition business model. We are historically an operator of response and we're moving to fully franchise business. Valued quite well for my background. And when I got here as a consultant, I was like, 'Wow, there is an incredible platform.' No doubt it's going to hit a little bit hard by the pandemic, but underlying are incredible brands, strong awareness, the risky background, a new business model that I thought it felt for the new day, actually really, really vulnerable part of kind of Regis 2.0.
J
Jared Banks1:57
Fantastic. Let's talk more about them. What are some of the business priorities that you've instilled since you've become CEO?
M
Matthew Doctor2:04
Yeah, no, absolutely. So really the last year was about prioritizing. As I mentioned, the pandemic hit hard, and so kind of look to prioritize it alongside two lenses: one, getting Regis stabilizing right. Everything so what that looks like a lot of last year was focusing on streamlining our G&A, focusing on storing for a balance sheet, focusing on our business. We sold out of a proprietary technology, which came as capital for a balance. We had a credit agreement brief finance that was coming due in March of 2023. We did an extension on that, pushing its maturity. I know by the way last year, after losing 70 million dollars in 2021, we broke even internally. So the big thing on the stabilizers in the background, prioritizing again what it is that we're going to do sort of going forward, sort of accelerating our salon business. So we put in place a great strategy with our franchise owners after listening to them, really focused on priorities moving forward of retaining and recruiting stylists, shifting customer marketing to retain our customers better, rolling out our new tech platform, and engage.
J
Jared Banks3:16
Okay, right now you're trading under the RGS ticker. How would you describe the Regis culture today?
M
Matthew Doctor3:25
Unbelievably resilient, bold, and passionate. Those are two things that came extremely well from everything that I've seen from here going through the pandemic. You have a group of people who are so proud, and they're just so proud of the brands, they're so proud to be here. We want to bring this company back to prominence. That has really energized me, I know it's energized Kirsten, and that's kind of the end.
J
Jared Banks3:54
Absolutely. All right, and Kirsten, turning to you, what are some KPIs that you could give us to sort of tell us what's happening right now?
K
Kirsten Zupfer4:04
Yeah, obviously we have an EBITDA KPI that we're focused on. Yeah, I think about from a strategy standpoint, customer retention KPIs around customer retention as well as stylist hours worked per day in first floor. So really focusing on driving traffic driving initiatives and a lot of drainable KPIs that will ultimately drive traffic.
J
Jared Banks4:29
Okay, and this is a question for either one of you, dealer's choice. We may be entering a recession, nobody knows, but let's talk about how the company has weathered previous recessions and how are you recession-proof, if you will, going forward?
M
Matthew Doctor4:48
Yeah, no, this is a company that's been extremely resilient through recessions. And I didn't ask this question, it has proven that's not necessarily a pandemic group, but from a recession standpoint, people looking to get their haircuts even wanted to get done outside of their home, they wanted to be done by trained professionals. We have even our brands have offered an incredible price point playing in the value sector, 20 to 25, so that's going to be attractive. It's an opportunity and it's true. Maybe a little less like having great values. The things that we're doing to brand loyalty, stylist loyalty, resilient. So we think that we're building on top of the basement, it was already a very well recession-ready business.
J
Jared Banks5:34
Okay, and Kirsten, maybe you can talk about sales growth and what needs to be done to achieve your sales growth target.
K
Kirsten Zupfer5:44
Yeah, I mean, it's kind of the KPIs I already talked about, right? Really focused on customer retention, stylist hours worked, and then kind of shift in our marketing. But that's the beauty of that, right? So we mentioned priorities, and so reset everyone in the company, got rid of all these original high school, everyone's focused on stylist hours worked so long today. So anything that doesn't run to those two things, we're putting it aside. So we put a lot of effort into sure. At the same time, everything is going to have to come back today. We're successful service hours of sales, profitability, and in turn meets the success.
J
Jared Banks6:31
All right. What sort of investments are you making as a company to make it a stronger brand?
M
Matthew Doctor6:40
Yeah, we're putting a lot of investment into school waivers of English, and that's what mission not only especially here in Arkansas, our employee base facilities. New detention campaigns, ability to better live through the data. So we're making a lot of investments happen again to support our main campus.
J
Jared Banks7:28
All right. Maybe I'll close by asking both of you, what are you most excited about within the year ahead?
K
Kirsten Zupfer7:37
I think the opportunity we really have. Like that said, we're focused on...
M
Matthew Doctor7:54
Yeah, I'm really excited about executing. Like I said, 2022 was an amazing year stabilizing, leading the company up, getting on path of property. We did all of that without even really scratching the surface of the fire over. So we're on this path now. We're at the beginning stage, so I executed one that's best for making an education customer retention, and when that shows them in our results.
J
Jared Banks8:21
Yeah, all right. Thank you very much, Matt, Kirsten. This has been RGS, Regis Corporation. I'm Jared Banks with IPO signing off.
