About Scott Thompson
In a September 2016 interview, Scott Thompson, then CEO of Tempur Sealy, discussed his first year leading the company. He described the transition as smooth, noting that he "missed most of the drama and upheaval" and that the company had a "record second quarter" with the team "performing very well." Thompson stated that the company planned to "continue to grow both domestically and internationally" by providing retailers with "great product" and meeting objectives.
Thompson characterized the "bed-in-a-box" segment as a "niche market" and said Tempur Sealy was "selling a few" but that its primary distribution would remain through retail partners like Sleep Outfitters. He expressed the view that "most people really want to experience the bed" and try it before buying online.

It's been great. There's been lots of challenges, but I've really enjoyed the people in the city. Get to work with a product that really changes people's lives, but more importantly, you get to work with a lot of people in the industry that really care about the product.

Tempur-Pedic when you took over was kind of going through a little bit of upheaval. How's the transition been?

Scott Thompson0:19
Well, from my standpoint, I missed most of the drama and the upheaval, and I came afterwards. I think we settled down fine, and as you probably know, we had a record second quarter, and the team's been performing very well. We will continue to grow both domestically and internationally, continue to focus on providing our retailers great product and meeting our objectives.

It's a niche market, and we're selling a few, but we really see that more as a niche market. Our primary distribution will be through our great retailers like Sleep Outfitters here locally, and I think that will continue to be our main focus. We want to be wherever our customers are going to be, and right now most people really want to experience the bed. They want to try a bed before they buy something online.

I'd never been to Lexington before I took the job. I researched it online, but once I got here I found it was a beautiful city.

I'm beginning to get a taste for bourbon, which has its good points and its bad points because normally I'm a wine drinker, but I've very much enjoyed the city. Probably Cole's would be my favorite restaurant. Certainly Dudley's on Short Street would be in there, Portao would be in there, National Pantry would be in the top five. I could probably name a few others. As you can probably tell, I eat out most.
