About Suann Guthrie

Suann Guthrie, Senior Vice President of Investor Relations, Sustainability & Global Communications at Darling Ingredients, has appeared on NYSE television programs in 2024 and 2025 to discuss the company’s business activities and strategy. In June 2025, she announced Darling Ingredients’ dual listing on the NYSE Texas exchange, stating the company would continue to trade under the ticker symbol DR on both exchanges. She described the move as providing greater exposure and flexibility, and noted that Darling Ingredients, which moved its headquarters to Dallas in 1986, wanted to be part of the NYSE’s relocation of its Chicago trading floor to Texas. Guthrie also discussed a joint venture with a company called Toenderloo to combine their collagen and gelatin businesses, which she said would create a $1.5 billion revenue company focused on the collagen-based health, wellness, and nutrition sector. In earlier appearances, Guthrie described Darling Ingredients as a company that recycles discards from the animal agriculture and food waste industries into ingredients for pet food, livestock feed, and human consumption, as well as feedstock for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. She stated that the company is a vertically integrated producer of renewable diesel through a 50-50 joint venture and that it shipped its first load of sustainable aviation fuel in the United States. Guthrie also outlined sustainability initiatives, including joining the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to set emissions reduction goals, conducting a biodiversity risk assessment for U.S. facilities, and working to calculate a carbon avoidance number. She mentioned research and development on a proprietary enzymatic process to separate amino acid chains from collagen for health benefits, including a product intended to slow glucose absorption.

NYC-based company Darling Ingredients is on a mission to turn edible byproducts and food waste into sustainable products. Joining me now to talk more about this is Suann Guthrie. She is the Senior Vice President of Investor Relations, Sustainability and Global Communications at Darling Ingredients. Good morning, Su.
S
Suann Guthrie0:19
Good morning. Thanks for having me here.
I

It's great to have you. Now, you know, sustainability is a key focus for you, your mission, and especially from where you sit. So talk to me more about this key initiative. What prompted such a focus?
S
Suann Guthrie0:30
Absolutely. So Darling in itself is probably one of the most circular and green companies out there. Essentially, our mission and our purpose is to ensure that every end has a new beginning. And what we do is we take discards from the animal agriculture and food waste industries, and we create hundreds of new ingredients from our 260 factories across the world. And those things go back into feeding livestock, feeding pets, feeding people in terms of gelatin and collagen. But also, now we are one of the largest renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels producers, making that from animal fats and used cooking oil.
I

Oh my. So tell me about how this concept was created. How did you go from using sustainable ingredients to creating, you know, jet fuel in a sense?
S
Suann Guthrie1:25
So in the past, Darling Ingredients' stock really followed corn prices. And my CEO at the time was looking for a way to decouple us from corn prices, because all animal fat had a use in the world was basically added calories to fatten up an animal for slaughter. So he found an opportunity, a piece of technology that was able to take a waste fat, animal fat and used cooking oil, and create a true hydrocarbon out of that that lowers greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%.

What would you say are some of the most impressive or key innovations that you've created that you're most proud of?
S
Suann Guthrie2:03
Well, absolutely, sustainable aviation fuel is number one. We just shipped our first load of sustainable aviation fuel that'll be going to a market here in the United States. So amazing opportunity to help decarbonize the aviation sector, because today there is no other decarbonization option. The other very fascinating thing that we do: we have a team of about 12 PhD scientists working on our R&D space. And what we've done through gelatin collagen is be able, through a proprietary enzymatic process, separate amino acid chains. And those amino acid chains have known health benefits. And so the first product that we launched a couple of weeks ago actually is a collagen, a natural collagen product that helps slow the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream.

Wow. What would you say is next for Darling Ingredients, especially as you finish off 2024 going into 2025? How are you going to continue to innovate in the sustainability space?
S
Suann Guthrie3:01
So for one, sustainable aviation fuel, that is going to continue to grow within our space. And then we are already working on research and development on that activated peptide to be able to attack other health concerns like skin health, gut health, memory retention.
