So now let's start off by talking about the company. Tell me about Darling Ingredients, its mission, and your role.

Absolutely. Well, at Darling Ingredients, we believe that every end has a new beginning. What do I mean by that? We take and recycle discards from the animal agriculture and food industries, and what we do with that is we create hundreds of valuable products that go back into society in the form of ingredients such as pet food ingredients, animal agriculture food ingredients, and then people food ingredients in the form of gelatin or hydrolyzed collagen. And then finally, what we do is we have a 50-50 joint venture, and we are one of the world's largest providers of renewable diesel made out of animal fat and used cooking oil.

All right. So tell me, how do you stand apart from others that are in this space?

Well, I would say we're the only ones in this space. We are the largest animal agriculture rendering company in the world. We process 15 million metric tons of materials that could otherwise go into landfill or be incinerated. So that's kind of our base business. And then I would say how we differentiate ourselves in the fuel segment, the renewable diesel segment, is that we are the only true vertically integrated producer, meaning we have that animal fat and that used cooking oil, and we're able to process that into our own renewable diesel and sell that into the world market.

And tell me, how are you approaching the energy transition?

That's a great question, because I think we play an important role in helping the world decarbonize. Right now, there is not a great drop-in solution aside from the fact of renewable diesel to help decarbonize the heavy haul transportation sector. So I believe in the future, you may have some electrification of heavy haul trucks, but renewable diesel is still going to play a very large role in decarbonization in marine as well as trains. And let's not forget about sustainable aviation fuel. We are in the process of adding on to our facility, and we will be producing sustainable aviation fuel in the near future.

And tell me, what are some of your most significant recent achievements as it relates to sustainability at Darling Ingredients?

Sustainability really is at our core. It's who we are, it's what we do, and we always continue to push ourselves on how can we do better. So what we did a year ago is that we did a double materiality assessment that was to help inform us of what our stakeholders find important and material, and how do we focus our sustainability priorities moving forward. So we conducted that. The other thing I'm really proud of that we did was we did a biodiversity risk assessment for our US-based facilities. We're taking those learnings and we're applying that into our other facilities in South America as well as Europe. So more to come there.

So finally, as you look to the year ahead, tell me what are your sustainability priorities?

Well, first and foremost is we have joined the SBTi initiative, so we need to set our science-based targets, and that needs to be done by the end of the year. So we will be setting our goals, and from there we will also be doing how do we attack that, how do we operationalize that, what does that look like over the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years. So that's a big priority for us right now. The other thing that we're trying to do is calculate a carbon avoidance number. If we didn't exist, there would be a lot more carbon in the world. So how do we do that? There's not a lot of really good standards around that, so we want to be thoughtful and we want to be able to utilize our stakeholders to inform us of, are we doing this right?
