About Alan Lowe
Alan Lowe, President and CEO of Lumentum Holdings, discussed the company's recent performance and strategic direction in a September 2024 interview. He stated that Lumentum exceeded its expectations for the latest quarter, though he noted that those expectations were low relative to the company's historic performance. Lowe highlighted the closure of the CloudLight acquisition as the most exciting part of the earnings announcement, describing it as an acquisition that adds to Lumentum's portfolio in the fastest-growing part of the markets it participates in. He explained that CloudLight, acquired for all cash and immediately accretive, allows Lumentum to play at a higher level of integration in the cloud space, increasing revenue per product by five to ten times compared to its previous component-level participation. Lowe also emphasized the role of high-speed optical interconnects in supporting artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, stating that these interconnects prevent GPUs from going idle and that the growth of data center interconnects is expected to exceed a 30% CAGR. He noted that Lumentum's first priority is integrating CloudLight and proliferating its products to other cloud operators, while continuing to invest in new product development and R&D.
In a separate 2016 presentation, Lowe, then associated with Roadstone, discussed cost-effective solutions for complying with Part L of the Building Regulations in Ireland. He described the Roadstone thermal block as a lightweight concrete block with improved thermal properties that addresses thermal bridging, a key concern for heat loss and mold risk. Lowe stated that using the thermal block in building details can achieve lower y-values, improving building energy ratings, and cited a case study where incorporating the blocks in 10% of build details resulted in fabric cost savings of over seven thousand euros. He noted that the cost to incorporate the blocks is relatively small, between 500 to 700 euros, compared to potential savings of six to nine thousand euros on heating system costs, and that Roadstone provides design support including white value certification and modeling.

Welcome back to The Watch List. I'm Nicole Pedales. We're watching Lumentum. Lumentum stock is up 133% this month after reporting earnings earlier this month, and it's closing an acquisition of Cloud Light. We want to hear all about that. Alan Lowe is with us, President and CEO of Lumentum, joining us right now. Thank you so much for being with us. I do want to get to the acquisition. When we think about some of the key financial metrics exceeding the mid-level guidance of the analysts, what went right in the latest quarter?
A
Alan Lowe0:35
Well, we did exceed our expectations. However, the expectations were fairly low compared to our historic performance. But we did what we said we were going to do, and we executed quite well. The most exciting part about the earnings announcement was the day before our earnings, we did announce the closure of Cloud Light. That's a very exciting acquisition that really adds to our portfolio in the fastest-growing part of the markets we participate in.
N
Nicole Pedales1:04
Tell me more about that. You managed to get that done before the earnings announcement. Why was the Cloud Light acquisition good at this time, and when do you actually expect to see it help the bottom line?
A
Alan Lowe1:19
Well, it's immediately accretive, as we said on the earnings call, which is very helpful given that we paid all cash for it, and it's growing very rapidly. Historically, Lumentum has been a participant in the cloud space at the component level or the optical chip level, and that's a critically important part of interconnecting the data centers. However, it's only about 10% to 20% of that transceiver that Cloud Light brings to our portfolio. So now we're playing at a higher level of integration, and we're vertically integrated. Our revenue for the same product or the same interconnect is now going to be between 5 and 10 times more than it was historically, where we were just providing the chips. Added to that is this really explosive growth of artificial intelligence and machine learning, which connecting all the GPUs and memory is really growing the interconnects even faster. We're seeing that the growth of data center interconnect and the transceivers that connect all of these GPUs and memory really is going to grow faster than 30% CAGR, which is extraordinary. We're in this sweet spot of the very highest speed transceivers that the customers and the cloud operators really need and want from us.

Nicole Pedales2:48
Faster time. You talk about the growth instead of a 10% or 20% in this component area, much higher level integration, five times plus in that area. So it really does put your company in a stronger position, and as you said, immediately accretive. Tell me more about the data centers and these cloud data center operators, and how exactly an example this would all be used.
A
Alan Lowe3:20
Well, I think as more and more data centers are focused on artificial intelligence, or hyperscalers are focused on artificial intelligence and gearing up their GPU acceleration, the GPUs are thirsty for data. The only way to get the data to those GPUs and to the memory surrounding the GPUs is through high-speed optical interconnects. We provide those very high-speed optical interconnects that really allow those GPUs to not go idle. That's critically important when these hyperscalers are spending so much money on providing their customers with artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. We're at the very early stages today of those deployments, and they're really going to fuel the optical interconnects because copper interconnects don't have the speed and latency requirements that the GPUs and artificial intelligence really need for now and into the future.

Nicole Pedales4:24
I'm sure you were extremely excited to have this happen because basically you put this to work, it's immediately accretive. You're already seeing some of the benefits of making this acquisition. You're growing through this acquisition rather than just growing organically. Will you continue to make more acquisitions in 2024 to do it this way, particularly as you talked about AI growth and machine learning? Are you going to need more to suffice and keep the customers even happier than they are at this point?
A
Alan Lowe5:01
Well, I think our first priority today is to integrate the Cloud Light acquisition, proliferate our products to other cloud operators, and really grow that business quite rapidly. We always have a funnel of acquisitions we're looking at, but our priority today is to make sure that we continue to grow that transceiver business and grow it faster than the market. We think we're in a great position to be able to do that as the Cloud Light products are really leading edge, and they have a track record of really executing on the best, fastest, most reliable transceivers in the industry. So it is a very exciting time for us.
N
Nicole Pedales5:40
Without a doubt. Just quickly, in case I left anything out, over one month the stock is up about 15%, so certainly a nice performance recently coming up off the lows. But a tough competitive environment as we leave it here, and you see the growth that you have seen exceeding expectations. A final thought as we look into 2024 for Lumentum.
A
Alan Lowe6:07
I think our product portfolio is the most vertically integrated in the industry, and our product portfolio is the broadest in the industry for telecommunication networks, data center operators, as well as looking at how people use photonics to process material. We have a laser business that does quite well for things like processing of semiconductors. We're very broad. We're very much looking forward to 2024. The future is really bright for Lumentum, and it's really our people and our team that are executing upon these acquisitions and executing on new product development that we're heavily investing in.
N
Nicole Pedales6:53
Just quickly, as you talk about processing, using photonics to process these materials such as semiconductors, what kind of demand do you expect for 2024? Are you feeling cautious or waiting to see more data?
A
Alan Lowe7:13
I don't really have a crystal ball about the economy. We're doing what we can to control what we can control, which is investing in our people, investing in new product development and R&D to make sure we have the absolute best products and technology to support our customers that we possibly can. From that perspective, I'm optimistic for sure because I think no matter what happens in the economy, we're going to have the best products and the best support of our customers that we possibly can.

Alan Lowe, it's wonderful to speak with you. Congratulations. Thank you so much.
