About Patrick Lucy
In a 2013 interview at the BIO convention, Patrick Lucy, then Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at Pfenex, described the company as a venture-backed biotechnology firm based in San Diego, California. He stated that the company possessed a novel protein expression technology platform used to generate a pipeline of biosimilars and novel vaccines. Lucy noted that Pfenex had recently pivoted from being a technology and service provider to becoming a product development company, a transition he described as a "great upside" for the organization. He also mentioned that the company had announced a joint venture with Agile Biotech to develop a series of six biosimilars, with the first product expected to enter the clinic later that year.
Lucy, who said he had been attending the BIO convention since 1993, advised other attendees to research the partnering system thoroughly before meetings to maximize value. He characterized the conference's attendees as "high value business folks" and praised the venue and location.

Hi, I'm Sandra Behan at the Buzz Center, and I'm here with Patrick Lucy of Ligand. He's the VP of BD and Marketing, and they are a Buzzer Bio winner for our convention. So welcome. Can you just tell us a little bit about your company and what it is that Ligand does?
P
Patrick Lucy0:22
Ligand is a venture-backed biotechnology company based in San Diego, California. What we have is a novel protein expression technology platform that we've used to generate a broad pipeline of biosimilars, as well as novel vaccines.
S
Sandra Behan0:38
And what has your experience been like as a Buzzer Bio winner?
P
Patrick Lucy0:39
Well, we did get about a thousand votes for the Pipelines of Promise, and I think that it's great to be recognized by your peers for developing a pipeline of products. So being able to transition from a platform technology to a product company has been a great upside for the company.
S
Sandra Behan0:56
Right. And you gave a company presentation here as well as part of being a winner at the event. How did that go? How was that experience?
P
Patrick Lucy1:02
I did. We had about 30 people in the room, a lot of questions after the presentation, so it definitely increased our exposure here at the conference.
S
Sandra Behan1:10
And how long have you been coming to the convention?
P
Patrick Lucy1:11
I have been coming to BIO since 1993, so it's been quite a while.
S
Sandra Behan1:17
Yeah. And how has your experience been this year?
P
Patrick Lucy1:18
It's been a great conference. I think the venue is excellent, the location's excellent, and the attendees have been really high-value business folks that we like to interact with.
S
Sandra Behan1:29
And is there something about your company that you would like attendees to know that may not know about your company?
P
Patrick Lucy1:33
Well, I think Ligand was initially launched as a protein expression technology company, so we were a technology and service provider in the first phase of the business. But recently, we've pivoted to becoming a product development company. So the development of a pipeline of biosimilars, as well as a couple novel vaccines, has really positioned the company for growth and value growth. I think going forward, we'll see a much bigger growth in value for Ligand. In fact, last week we announced a joint venture to develop a series of six biosimilars with Agile Biotech, and those products will be the first product we enter during the clinic later this year.

Great. And do you have any tips for next year's Buzzer Bio winner? So someone who was nominated, anything you can give them as advice on what they should do?
P
Patrick Lucy2:20
Definitely. So, comfortable shoes. But I think to get the most value out of the BIO partnering, do quite a bit of research on the partnering system. It offers you a great opportunity to look at profiles of companies, find potential partners, and really frame the discussion before the meeting. But other than that, I think the database of partners is quite extensive and easy to operate, so it's more or less doing your homework before you arrive in San Diego.

Great. Well, thank you very much. I want to thank you again and congratulations on being a Buzzer Bio winner. It's very exciting. And I'm Sandra Behan with the Buzz Center. Thank you.
