About Richard Cook

In a 2013 interview, Richard Cook described a career of founding, building, and selling multiple businesses across different sectors. He stated that his first business was a property firm, which he built into what he called the largest independently owned estate agency in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Buckinghamshire before selling it in the 1980s. Cook said he subsequently bought a niche publishing business, grew it into a large publishing company, and sold it; built up and sold several chains of bars and restaurants; and introduced check cashing to the UK, building what he described as the largest check cashing organization in the country before selling it to the company now known as Money Shop. He also said he built a finance business through franchising and sold it. Cook stated that he had since retired from full-time business and worked as a business mentor, company doctor, advisor, and non-executive director. He said he could bring an analytical and questioning mindset to businesses, citing his experience in management, raising funding, planning exits, and franchising.

My name is Richard Cook. My first business was a property business. I built up what was the largest independently owned estate agency at Herts, Beds, and Bucks, which I sold out to one of the big building societies in the '80s. I then went from there to publishing. I bought a little niche publishing business, built that into a big publishing business, and again sold that out. Then went from there to bars and restaurants. I built up several chains of bars and restaurants, built those up, sold those out, and then went from there to check cashing. I brought check cashing to the UK. We built what was the largest check cashing organization in the UK, built that up, sold that out to what is now Money Shop. I went from there to a finance business. I built up a finance business by way of franchise, built that up, and sold that out. I then retired from full-time business. I now sit as a business mentor, company doctor, advisor, non-exec, everything within that sort of category. What I could bring to your business is a very analytical mind, a very questioning mind, because everything I've done in business, I think you need to do it just a little bit different to get it right. I've got experience of building businesses up, all the complications that that involves in terms of management, in terms of raising your funding, in terms of looking at an exit. I've got lots of experience in terms of franchising.
