In a September 2024 interview, Jonathan Whitted discussed homelessness in the DC area. He stated that the majority of people served by his organization are from the Black African-American community. Whitted emphasized the importance of understanding the historical context and challenges those individuals may have faced. Whitted also stressed the importance of demographic representation in leadership roles. He said that as an African-American male, it is important for him to have real conversations about the challenges that people who look like him have experienced within the system and community.

The DC Metro Area, the majority of the folks that we serve are representative of the Black African-American community. And I think it's good to always be cognizant of the folks that you're serving, the challenges that they may have gone through, having understanding of historical context. The biggest thing too is always having representation of different demographics, especially of the folks that you're serving, in leadership roles. As an African-American male, it's important for me that when we're discussing the challenges of the folks who have gone through this system here in this community, I am able to have real conversations about the historical context of what different individuals have gone through who look like me.
