I think like many young boys when I was growing up, I had aspirations to be a professional athlete. So I played high school baseball and football, and played college baseball in Northern California at a small junior college. Then I ended up getting drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1989 draft in a fairly low draft round, but it was still a pretty cool environment. I loved the camaraderie with the people I played with and still remember that fondly today.
I got married relatively young and I was working a manual labor job. My wife was giving me that gentle nudging to get back in the game a little bit, so she pushed me to get back into school and start pursuing my career. My mom worked for the former parent company of USANA, Gold Laboratories. I heard wonderful things about it, and it was a trial project for Dr. Winston testing what USANA is today. So I really learned at the very inception of the company from the ground up how it worked.
Far and away, the most rewarding thing I have is the engagement with the people I work with. I love an environment where we can go back and pressure test each other. I love the banter, I love the questions, I love the good people I work with, and really the purpose of the company and the vision of the company as well.
