About Serhad Doken
Serhad Doken, Chief Technology Officer at Adeia, participated in a sustainability panel at Streaming Media NYC in September 2024. Doken described Adeia as a publicly traded company with media and semiconductor business units focused on long-term inventions that lead to new products, markets, and services. He discussed the complexity of the media technology stack, which he characterized as encompassing content capture, transmission, and consumption, and involving infrastructure, cloud, network, and encoding components.
Doken stated that Adeia approaches problems from a system perspective, considering trade-offs across different parts of the tech stack. He said that in engineering, changes in one area can produce gains and losses elsewhere, and that finding the optimal balance is the focus of the company's advanced research and development.

Welcome back to this final interview of Streaming Media NYC here at the Intercontinental Barclay. I'm here with one of my panelists for the upcoming sustainability panel, Sirod. Tell us your full name, your title, and what you do these days.

Sure, nice to be here, Tim. My name is Serhad Doken. I'm the CTO at Adeia. Adeia is a publicly listed company at NASDAQ with two different business units: one is media, and the second one is semiconductor. What we do is inventions at the forefront for the problems that the industry is going to experience in the future. Our focus is pretty broad and deep this can go on for 5 to 10 years, and those inventions lead to new products, new markets, new services.

Okay, very good. And you're on the sustainability panel. One of the things that you mentioned in our pre-interview was that sustainability, we tend to focus in really small silos, but in reality we need to think about it across the broader perspective. Give me your take on that.

You're absolutely right. The media ecosystem, the tech stack, is pretty complex, interconnected subparts. Right, even when we say tech stack, the tech stack of what? We look at our business as content capture, transmission, and consumption. So you have to look at the infrastructure, cloud, network, encoding the content, how the content is being consumed, and all those different parts have their own tech stack. So this lines up with our heritage and culture because we look at problems from a system perspective, not just one aspect. We say, hey, if I change something here, what would it impact there? As you know, in engineering, everything is a tradeoff. You don't get something for nothing. When you change something here, you have some gains, there may be some loss there. So what is the perfect optimization? Those are the things we focus on in our Advanced R&D.

Very good. Well, thank you very much for your time. Sorry it's such a brief interview, but we're going to switch gears and go down and be part of the panel. So those of you who are watching this online after the fact, please also watch the longer panel which will be up on streamingmedia.com as well. Thank you.
