About Herbert Harton
Lynn Harton, chairman and CEO of United Community Banks, appeared on NYSE TV Live on September 17, 2024, after ringing the ceremonial opening bell. He said the bank is preparing to celebrate its 75th anniversary, which he described as notable given industry consolidation. Harton stated he is most proud of the bank's reputation for service, noting it is a 10-time J.D. Power winner and a leader for trust in the Southeast.
Harton attributed the bank's growth to a strategy of "staying small as we continue to grow," which he said allows the bank to offer needed products and technology while maintaining personal connections with customers. He said this approach has helped attract other banks and bankers who share that culture. Harton also credited his team, saying their dedication and focus on putting the customer first are responsible for the bank's achievements.

What would you say you are most proud of?
H
Herbert Harton0:18
Well, there's a lot of things to be proud of. We're getting ready to celebrate our 75th anniversary, which is something to be proud of given the amount of consolidation going on in the business. But what I'd say I'm most proud of is our reputation for service. We're a ten-time J.D. Power winner and leader for trust in the Southeast among all banks. And we couldn't do it without the dedication and the intellect of our great team around the company. So that's what I'm most proud of.

Amazing. And talk to me about what has been the driving factor you attribute your significant growth to.
H
Herbert Harton0:52
We have this thing about needing to stay small as we continue to grow. We need to grow so we can have the products and technology that our customers need and desire, but they also want a personal connection. They want us to know their name, they want to be treated like an individual and not a number. Keeping that connection and remaining small has helped us grow, both by bringing new banks into the company who want that culture, by bringing in new bankers from large banks who feel disenfranchised, and by driving that customer service. So I would say staying small is what's driven our growth.

I love that sentiment. But also, like you said, it takes a hugely committed team to get to where you are today. Everybody who's watching near and far, some maybe around the world, what would you like to tell them all who are tuning in to NYC TV Live this morning?
H
Herbert Harton1:46
Well, particularly for my team, I'd like to congratulate them because this is really a testament to their work, their dedication, their passion to putting the customer first. I would like to thank them, congratulate them, and say this is really all for you.
