Starting with his early life and education, he was born and brought up in Alberta. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering between 1996 and 2001 from the University of Calgary. He later followed his education with a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering between 2001 and 2005.
While he was in graduate school, he and three colleagues in 2001 launched StumbleUpon. It was an internet discovery portal that was one of its kind and worked as a web search engine but was customized to surpass users' interests by drawing recommendations from connected social networks and peers.
Next comes his notable accomplishments. Firstly, he was known for the StumbleUpon portal that moved to the San Francisco area in 2006 and secured $1.2 million from angel investors. As CEO, he moved with it. In 2007, the portal was acquired by eBay for $75 million.
Garrett continued to run it, but he was frustrated with the lack of flexibility and control and came back in 2009 as CEO of the independent organization. He led the successful run with a five-fold increase in the portal's user base, including 25 million users by 2012. That was the peak, and in 2012 he stepped down as CEO to focus on his ventures. He stayed on as chairman again and brought the majority of stakes in the organization in 2015. When StumbleUpon ran into debt, he continued to stumble and shut down in 2018.
Next is Uber. In 2009, he with Travis Kalanick co-founded the popular cab service organization known as Uber, that later became Uber Technologies but is known as Uber worldwide. Kalanick became the CEO while Garrett joined the board and served as chairman for years. The service started in San Francisco in 2010 and expanded across US cities and international locations. It added distinct variants of services like Uber SUV, UberX, Uber Taxi, and more in 2012. The service was focused on reducing the cost of cab rides and at one point became the highest valued private startup worldwide.
Now comes Expa. In 2013, Garrett founded Expa, the firm that serves as a global network of entrepreneurs who helped the peer-supported creation of organizations and businesses. Since the startup, the firm has launched 30 ventures and raised $1 billion to fund them. The Expa Studio division also provides operational support, workspaces, and technical advice for startups.
In 2015, he made a fresh start attempt at the search tool similar to StumbleUpon and he launched Mix.com, the portal to discover compelling content on the web for users. Another camp on the list is Eco, and the Expa initiatives were announced in 2018. He envisioned it as a new cryptocurrency, but in 2019 the concept is now a partnership with Beam.io.
The net worth of Garrett Camp has surprisingly increased and is around $3.4 billion as of 2021. In 2015, he became the 283rd richest person globally and the third richest in Canada with a wealth of $5.3 billion. But his net worth declined and in 2019 it was around $4.6 billion.
So what cryptocurrency did Garrett Camp start? In 2018, he announced the creation of Eco, a cryptocurrency that would be highly energy efficient and faster than other cryptocurrencies. However, it never went past the design stage and he partnered with the organization to turn into a financial app for spending, sending, and saving money.
Talking more about him, he has garnered various awards and honors. He was named to the TR35 list of top innovators under the age of 35 at an emerging technologies conference in 2007 at MIT. In 2008, he was named by Bloomberg Businessweek as one of the best young tech entrepreneurs. He was also honored at Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards in 2013 for his accomplishments at Uber and StumbleUpon.
There are some allegations of exploitation. As in June of 2019, he bought a newly launched 11,000 square foot mansion in Trousdale Estates of Beverly Hills for $72.5 million. He also drew the ire of activists and Uber drivers who protested the firm's labor practices and advocated for better working conditions for drivers.
Finally, his philanthropy acts include him joining as a Giving Pledge member where he committed to giving half of his wealth to charity. In the personal portion of his plans, he spoke about recent travels to Kenya where he connected with people living without access to basic services like food, electricity, and clean water. Moreover, in 2018 he established a non-profit Camp Foundation to support research into sustainability, infrastructure, and conservation projects having a significant global impact.
