About Ross Stevens
Ross Stevens, founder and executive chairman of NYDIG, has been a vocal advocate for Bitcoin in a series of public appearances, often discussing its properties as a monetary asset. He has described Bitcoin as "the best money we have" and "the best money we've ever had," arguing that it is a store of value whose supply is unaffected by demandhol. Stevens has characterized fiat currency as "vulnerable" and subject to "the whims of human frailties," while stating that Bitcoin is "the thing that's fixed." He has also described Bitcoin as "life insurance" in the sense of providing "freedom and dignity," and has said that the Federal Reserve's money printing "steals time" from people, particularly "the non-asset owners."
Stevens has compared Bitcoin builders to medieval cathedral builders, stating that they are "working on something bigger than ourselves" and "working on sound money for Humanity." He has argued that Bitcoin's energy use will act as a catalyst for the development of "abundant clean cheap energy," claiming that "bitcoin mining can be located anywhere" and will allow humanity to "move the people to the power." In discussions with Michael Saylor, Stevens has stated that "if you are not long, you're short bitcoin" and that for companies adopting the "bitcoin standard," the results are "profound."

Bitcoin is also life insurance, though. But it's not life insurance in the sense of a big payout if you die. It's more in the sense of a big payout while you live. But it's not a big payout in the formal sense of a big pot of fiat money. It's a payout in the sense of personal sovereignty. It's a form of freedom and dignity. When you're poor and all you have is fiat, and that's a melting ice cube of value, you lose your dignity every single day. The Fed prints, and that is not okay. The good news though is we finally have a monetary system governed by rules, not rulers, and it's open to all. So everybody gets to choose, which is great. You can stay on the fiat standard, in which a very small group of people get to produce unlimited new units of money, just not you. Or you can opt in to the Bitcoin standard, in which no one gets to do that, including you. You can decide which is more fair. So for me, Andrew, during this time period, thinking about these kinds of thoughts, the exacerbation of wealth inequality, the profound unfairness of central bank activities even though they're well-intentioned, I saw the awesome power of Bitcoin. And you're right, since 2013 actually, been involved since 2015 in a serious way, so it wasn't new, but I saw the awesome power of Bitcoin in a new light. And I just decided, personally, it was totally a personal decision, I wanted to say non-zero words about it. So I gently lifted the no-press policy at NYDIG, and I'd say I'm in the very early stages of finding my voice on the importance of Bitcoin.
