About S. Kim

Joowan Kim, Vice President of Samsung Electronics and head of mobile service strategy including blockchain, spoke at the 2019 Korea Blockchain Week about a partnership with the blockchain company Lympo. Kim stated that Samsung Health users are not active in entering fitness data because it is inconvenient, and described a pilot program in which users’ step data, with permission, is transferred to Lympo’s blockchain app. He said that users who walk 5,000 steps a day receive token rewards as an incentive, and that a closed test of the program was “very successful.” Kim said that some issues current services cannot solve “can be solved with Blockchain, so more security and usability can be provided.” He added that Samsung would try to address these challenges not only for Samsung Health but also for other services, aiming to “provide better quality services for our users.”

But, to be honest, we have some pain regarding Samsung Health. Users are not that active to enter the information because it's inconvenient. For example, an exercise I did today and other information could be entered, but users are not rushing to do so. We're trying solving this with Blockchain. We're partnering with one company, currently cooperating with them. With our user's permission, step data which is recorded on Samsung Health is moved to our partner's blockchain app. Then users can earn a token reward as an incentive. For instance, if users walk 5,000 steps a day, they are rewarded with tokens, so they become more motivated to enter fitness data.
So more security and usability can be provided. We will try solving these challenges not only for Samsung Health but also for other services. So we will provide better quality services for our users.
