About Murali Krishnan
Murali Krishnan, cofounder at Deduce and formerly president of Xiaomi India, appeared on a Xiaomi live stream in September 2022 to promote the company's "Diwali With Me" sales event. During the stream, he stated that Xiaomi is the number one smartphone and smart television brand in India, and also the leading robo vacuum cleaner and smart security camera brand in the country. He discussed the company's "India‑ready 5G" strategy, saying that 5G devices are becoming more affordable and that Xiaomi ensures its devices are compatible with Indian telecom operators. He offered coupon codes for instant discounts on Redmi smartphones and a power bank, and described the Redmi Note series as offering flagship-like features at affordable prices. In a June 2022 Sangam Talks discussion on cannabis, Muralikrishnan Dhanasekaran (the same individual) spoke about the historical, medicinal, and recreational uses of cannabis. He described cannabis as a substance of abuse that is psychoactive, and distinguished between CBD, which he said does not affect the brain, and THC, which he said has significant psychoactive properties. He explained that both compounds bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body. He noted that endocannabinoids are naturally present in the human body, and referenced a claim by another speaker that the cannabis industry could become a half-trillion-dollar economy, adding that India could adapt or risk being overtaken by others.

But to start things off, I would like to know what is your take or how do you think the Redmi Note series has changed India's overall smartphone landscape?

It has changed the hearts of millions of consumers out there who've been Redmi Note users, because the Redmi Note series has always attempted to pack all-round features in a device at a very affordable price point. I mean, literally, I would talk about flagship-like features at very affordable price points. Starting all the way from Redmi Note 4, let's take the example of Redmi Note 7 Pro which boasted of the first 48 megapixel camera sensor, the Redmi Note 8 Pro which had the first 64 megapixel camera sensor, more recently the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Pro Max, and our most recent launched Redmi Note 11 Pro and the Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus 5G, which is the first 5G device from the house of Redmi Note. Each one of them absolute stunners, absolute rockstars of themselves, great design, easily accessible smartphones in terms of pricing. We are still industry leading: first 48 megapixel smartphone. Funnily enough, a few weeks back we had a flagship device reveal their first 48 megapixel smartphone, funny because years ago we did this on a smartphone such as the Redmi Note series, right?

Great speeds and low latency and concurrency and so on. 5G is also about putting together the right package that touches the hearts of consumers and makes the entire thing utilitarian. For example, till now most of the 5G devices have been priced above 20,000. Pretty much any device about 20,000 that you pick will have 5G capability. But we're seeing 5G devices come down the price ladder and get closer to 15,000 rupees. And once you start touching those price points, that's when you truly open up the bottom of the pyramid and millions of users will have access to the beauty of 5G. And our approach of India Ready 5G and the product that we're going to talk about, I'm given to understand, is one of them.

Okay, two easy answers and two which perhaps not too many know. Xiaomi is the number one smartphone brand and the number one smart television brand in the country. We take credit for actually having heralded the smart television revolution in this country. These two data points, I think a lot of people are actually aware of. But the two additional categories where we've been declared as the number one brand recently in Q1 of 2022: one is the robo vacuum cleaner category, a category that was fairly, still is in its infancy, but a category that took off during the course of COVID lockdowns. So we are the number one robo vacuum cleaner brand in the country, and we are also the number one smart security camera brand in this country, adding to the list of accolades that we so proudly have.

I love all of those. I love the bedside lamp. But if I were to look at something more recent, we've already spoken about the robo vacuum cleaner. We had the smart air fryer launched recently. But the one that I think I will truly call out as my favorite recent launch in the Xiaomi ecosystem stable would be the Xiaomi Smart Fan. That thing looks so beautiful, gorgeous design, looks absolutely contemporary. The BLDC motor is whisper quiet, and you can control it through the Mi Home app. It's smart, and that's why it's called smart. What a fantastic device at such an amazing price point. I truly love the Xiaomi Smart Fan.

No, no, look, working at Xiaomi is crazy fun. It keeps you very busy weekdays, nights, and so on and so forth. But you know, one needs to figure out time to indulge in the things that you're truly interested in. I cycle twice a week, running on weekends whenever I can find the time, and you can run even if you're traveling, which I end up doing a lot. Those are your me time, right, where you can just focus on that moment, mindfulness they call it. So yeah, I indulge in a lot of fitness related activities too.
