Cfo Roger Dassen (ASML): 'Recordorders, maar minder banen door stroperige organisatie'

📅 Jan 28, 2026 BNR 9 MIN 2712 VIEWS 18 SEGMENTS · 2 SPEAKERS
2. 1:27But how sustainable is that development if, at the same time, there have been concerns in recent months—and you wouldn't have been deaf to them—about whether these investments will eventually actually earn money?
  3. 2:17Does it depend on whether a particular machine falls in the third, fourth, or first quarter?
  4. 4:27But are you getting complaints from the people who do the technical work, or have you also received serious complaints or remarks from customers?
  5. 6:56Also knowing that they have started testing their own EUV machines there?
  6. 8:47Is it responsible to keep saying that ASML has such a lead that it is not or hardly catchable?

Last half hour of BNR. Business news and economic insight. Chip machine maker ASML posted a record revenue of almost 33 billion in 2025, a 16% increase compared to the previous year. And despite that strong growth, which is expected to continue this year, the company from Veldhoven will be letting people go in the coming period. This emerges from the publication of last year's figures. We have ASML CFO Roger Dassen on the line. Good afternoon.

Good afternoon.

Why did the revenue turn out so positively for ASML?
Roger Dassen 0:35 ↗
Yes, you're right. The last quarter was a record quarter in terms of revenue, order intake, and cash flow generation. Why did it turn out so positively? We actually see that our customers are increasingly concluding that the demand for AI and their AI products is sustainable. It's not something that will disappear in a year. This has actually led to a number of our major customers setting up substantial investment programs, building large new factories, and thereby creating the opportunity to place a significant number of ASML tools this year and in the coming years. So that change, that they are now looking at a sustainable development in AI, is actually the most important factor. And you see this both on the side of logic chips and on the side of memory chips.

But how sustainable is that development if, at the same time, there have been concerns in recent months—and you wouldn't have been deaf to them—about whether these investments will eventually actually earn money?
Roger Dassen 1:39 ↗
Yes, but I think our customers, before they announce a 50 billion investment, naturally do their homework thoroughly. And I think what they have also seen is that the efficiency improvement you get from AI in a business environment has convinced them that it is sustainable. And based on that conviction, you see hyperscalers building, and they have demand for the most recent AI chips. And that leads to a considerable investment plan for our customers.

You just mentioned the last quarter of 2025, a record quarter. I've also been told that for you, it's immediately about serious orders. Does it depend on whether a particular machine falls in the third, fourth, or first quarter?
Roger Dassen 2:32 ↗
Well, regarding revenue, that is certainly the case. But when it comes to orders, we have indeed always said in the past that orders often come in large volumes. A customer who orders 4 or 5 billion at ASML today might not do so next quarter. That is the reason we have more often said that order intake can be lumpy. It can vary greatly from one quarter to the next. The order intake we had in Q4 was outright spectacular. 13.2 billion in order intake in a quarter. That is much, much more than we have ever had. And I think that really signals that our customers are now looking at the AI market in a different way.
