No, we're not talking about Microsoft's operating system. Meet Gauzy. They are on their way to revolutionize the way we think of ordinary glass, making the glass work for us. And we're not talking Google Glass. Gauzy uses liquid crystals on glass, the same material used in LCD screens. So, tell me a little bit about your company. How did it all start?

So actually, it started out by me trying to solve something in my apartment in Tel Aviv. I needed to turn one of my front panels of glass from opaque to transparent. I couldn't put any shades or blinds in it because there was no room. So I started looking around, saw there weren't good solutions for that, and then it started off, yeah.

Okay. Well, you know, we saw a little bit in the video, but tell me yourself, what's the future you see in the glass industry?

So, not only in the glass industry, but mainly in the glass industry, Gauzy's vision is to introduce technologies into our traditional environments. One big portion of that is glass, either glass walls, windows, it can be a glass window of a car, it can be glass doors of a refrigerator. We are trying to embed a lot of technology into our traditional environments. We're doing that by developing liquid crystal applications. It's basically the same compounds used for displays, but to do things like shade a window. You can decide how much light comes through a glass window, or you can have blinds embedded into a glass, no mechanical parts or whatever.

So basically, instead of putting a screen on something, the glass is the screen itself, and you can decide exactly... well, that's a little bit into the future, okay?

Currently, when we say screen, it's like a few pixels. When I say blinds, for instance, these blinds in the studio here, these strips, we can actually control them, make them transparent, take them up and down. Later on, we will pixel it and have low-resolution displays within the glass. But we can, because it's liquid crystal, we can project on it very high-resolution images and then have a transparent, for instance, for shop windows.

Okay. So who are your potential customers?

So we're already active, actually. For instance, we've been able to introduce our technology into the Ritz-Carlton being already built in Israel. And we've built the Porsche booth in the last World Trade Show in Frankfurt. So we have various customers from various industries. We can embed technology in any kind of glass used for any kind of application. We're actually partnering with the worldwide glass industry. We're selling them the raw material, we're developing the chemistry itself and all the electronic parts, and they're embedding it to make all kinds of applications.

Tell me again about the refrigerator example you told me in the mix.

So a big worldwide refrigerator manufacturer came to us actually, saying we have a problem we want to solve. 70 percent of the time, people open and close a refrigerator door, or they don't take anything out, or they just open it and just stare at what's missing or not. That makes the refrigerator engine work three times as hard in order to cool again the refrigerator, wasting a lot of energy, also introducing a lot of wear out to the rubber that closes the door, the hinges, getting more heat inside. So they asked us to build the refrigerator door out of liquid crystal glass, so that anyone can shutter the door without opening it and keeping the refrigerator cool. Hence, the door can become transparent, yes, it can be kind of transparent, you can see what's inside without opening it, and that can really reduce energy waste.

And what you're talking about sounds huge and very global to me. All that in Tel Aviv?

Yes. So our business model is very unique. The way we are able to sell in Brazil and Australia and Europe, and coming soon in the United States and Japan, is that we partner with big glass manufacturers anywhere in the world. We actually certify them how to embed liquid crystal into glass based on their own manufacturing facility, and then they can do projects anywhere. So if we have to introduce it into glass of a refrigerator, we do it with a partner. We basically are involved in developing the liquid crystals and manufacturing them in Israel, which is very unique. This is the only R&D center and manufacturing facility for liquid crystals outside the Far East. Big companies like Samsung and LG, and a small company in Israel called Gauzy.
