Courtney McCuade 0:00 ↗
Hi, I'm Courtney McCuade with Markets Group here at our 11th Alts LA. With me is the legendary Tim Draper, founding partner of Draper Associates. It is so nice to meet you, Tim.
Tim Draper 0:12 ↗
Great. Thank you. And nice meeting you, too, Courtney.
Courtney McCuade 0:15 ↗
So, you just put your money where your mouth is on Poly Market. Bitcoin four times by 2028. What makes you so sure?
Tim Draper 0:23 ↗
Oh, I'm absolutely certain because of the way Bitcoin has followed a certain pattern. Whenever there's a halving, that means there is less Bitcoin out there. So in simple supply and demand rules, it would mean that the price would go up. And if you just estimate based on how the other halvings have worked, it's almost exactly where I expect it to be.
Courtney McCuade 0:52 ↗
Well, I look forward to watching that. Now, institutional allocators in that other room are still on the sidelines with cryptos. What are they missing out?
Tim Draper 1:03 ↗
Well, they're really going to miss out when we have sort of a major financial transformation. You know, my dad gave me a million dollar bill when I was about 10. And I said, 'What can I do with it?' And he said, 'Nothing.' And I said, 'What do you mean nothing? It's a million dollars.' He said, 'It's a million Confederate dollars.' And nobody wanted Confederate dollars after the war. And so they had huge inflation. Nobody trusted the currency and out it goes. Same thing's happening now. And eventually you'll get to the point where the retailers accept Bitcoin and then the retailers will only accept Bitcoin. And then there will be a moment where people run to the banks and try to get out their dollars. There will be a high inflationary period and then there'll be this mass entrance to Bitcoin. And if you're responsible for other people's money and you're a treasurer of some big company or whatever and you don't have Bitcoin, you have all your money in one or two banks, you're being irresponsible.
Courtney McCuade 2:15 ↗
Yeah, I was going to say I did read that you've said it's irresponsible not to own it by now. That's really interesting.
Tim Draper 2:23 ↗
Right.
Courtney McCuade 2:24 ↗
Yeah.
Tim Draper 2:24 ↗
Right.
Courtney McCuade 2:27 ↗
Now you have been an early investor in Tesla, in Skype, Coinbase. What does the next Coinbase look like?
Tim Draper 2:36 ↗
Coinbase looks like Coinbase, only a lot bigger. Yeah, I tend to be an early investor in certain things. So, I meet entrepreneurs every day, about eight per day on average. And in meeting entrepreneurs, they're always giving me a view of the future. And so when I predict things like, 'Hey, Bitcoin's going to eclipse the dollar' or 'Coinbase will be a really big deal' or 'Tesla will be a big deal' or 'SpaceX will be a big deal,' it's because I've been meeting with people for a long time and all we're doing is taking a little bit of a leap forward and saying, 'Hey, this is probably the way the world's going to go.' And so, yeah, that's what I do. It pays to talk to people and then to project out their vision of the future and then you can assemble your own vision of the future.
Courtney McCuade 3:37 ↗
Fascinating. And AI of course is reshaping so many industries. How is that going to impact venture capitalism?
Tim Draper 3:46 ↗
Oh, we have already started. I have five digital twins. We use AI to evaluate entrepreneurs. We use AI to record all the meetings with the entrepreneurs and we do transcriptions with Otter, but then we use SER to evaluate emotions, whether somebody's telling the truth. We use MAPA to evaluate their voice to see what kind of personality they are. And then entrepreneurs that come to our website have an opportunity to put their deck up and get it evaluated by AI and then they can also talk to my digital twin and in an iterative way figure out their business model. And that actually has made the entrepreneurs that finally do come to us better and just more likely to be funded. We also, I also have a digital twin that takes press releases and turns them into shows. And we use a lot of AI in editing Meet the Drapers, our show. And our entrepreneurs that come through Draper University are encouraged to use AI because they can then set up, you know, the billion-dollar single-employee organizations. This is really an amazing transformative time. AI, Bitcoin, all the great uses of the internet. It's going to be a really amazing time over the next 10 or 15 years.
Courtney McCuade 5:41 ↗
It really is. And Draper University, you mentioned that. What an incredible school to have launched, an incredible opportunity. I've seen some of your videos about it. Can you tell me what are maybe one or two of the key differences that Draper University offers versus a normal MBA type school?
