Ted Turner, former Chairman of Turner Enterprises, discussed his life and career with David Letterman. He reflected on his early business ventures, including buying a station in Atlanta and celebrating being the last station standing. He expressed mixed satisfaction with CNN, noting he would run it differently. Turner talked about his sailing career, including winning the America's Cup in 1977 and surviving a storm near Cape Hatteras. He detailed his efforts to end the Cold War by befriending leaders of communist countries, including Fidel Castro, and funding the Goodwill Games at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. He also recounted a promotional stunt with the Atlanta Braves where he pushed a baseball with his nose. On the economy, he predicted a long downturn, advocated for lifestyle changes, and criticized consumer debt.

Key takeaways

  1. Turner won the America's Cup in 1977 but did not win in 1974 or 1980.
  2. He funded the Goodwill Games, costing hundreds of millions of dollars, as his biggest effort to end the Cold War.

Welcome back to the show. Great pleasure to have you with us. Let me tell you what I know. I'm reading this book. Fascinating. A great entertaining book to have. And I believe that it was written to kind of coincide with a personal anniversary of yours. Your birthday going to be 70 years old. Congratulations.
Ted Turner 0:14 ↗
Thank you.
Host 0:25 ↗
And you've done quite a lot of stuff in 70 years.
Ted Turner 0:28 ↗
Quite a lot of stuff. Several lifetimes all there rolled into one. It's been kind of tiring, but it's been fun.
Host 0:39 ↗
Yeah. I saw the piece on 60 Minutes last night. Did you happen to watch that, sir? What did you think of that?
Ted Turner 0:44 ↗
Yeah. I thought it was very fair and well done. I liked it.
Host 0:50 ↗
Yeah. And when you saw yourself, you thought, 'Yeah, that's a pretty good guy there.'
Ted Turner 0:57 ↗
I have to admit, yeah, I do feel like a pretty good guy. I've tried real hard to be a good person. That's what my parents told me.
Host 1:03 ↗
Let me ask you a couple of things about the book that have tickled me. Early on in your life, young, very young businessman, billboards, took over your father's business, went into radio, went into television, and you bought a station in Charlotte and you changed the call letters to WETV. Is that right?
Ted Turner 1:18 ↗
That's absolutely right.
Host 1:23 ↗
And there was another, I think another UHF station in that market or maybe it was Atlanta. I'm not sure. And it went dark. They went out of business.
Ted Turner 1:28 ↗
That was in Atlanta.
Host 1:34 ↗
So then to kind of celebrate, you had a party at the station live on TV and you televised the party.
Ted Turner 1:39 ↗
That's right. We did. It was thanking Atlanta for sticking with us because we outlasted the other guys. It was the last television station standing.
Host 1:47 ↗
And how long was the televised party on the air?
Ted Turner 1:54 ↗
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was half hour, an hour.
Host 2:00 ↗
And was it just you and the staff walking around?
Ted Turner 2:00 ↗
That's right. Waving at the audience.
Host 2:10 ↗
Oh man, that's pretty entertaining, isn't it?
Ted Turner 2:10 ↗
We didn't have a big programming budget in those days.
Host 2:17 ↗
Now, Ted, when you look at CNN now, and everybody looks at CNN now, become a fixture, part of the culture, but are you satisfied with the product?
Ted Turner 2:22 ↗
Well, I'm satisfied with some aspects of it. I think they're doing a good job in some areas. In other areas, if I was running it, I would do it a little differently, but, you know, just about anybody would do that. I'd do your show differently.
Host 2:42 ↗
No, I will. Well, let's go. It's about time.
Ted Turner 2:52 ↗
Yeah. Let's talk a little bit about... I think you laugh too much on this show.
Host 2:56 ↗
Well, I'm always... I'm only kidding.
Ted Turner 2:56 ↗
We don't laugh enough. There's not enough laughs on CNN, I can tell you.
Host 3:02 ↗
Tell me about you. You ever watch Lou Dobbs?
Ted Turner 3:10 ↗
Yeah. It's not funny, is it?
Host 3:10 ↗
Well, not now.
Ted Turner 3:20 ↗
No. That's one thing you can be sure of.
Host 3:20 ↗
Tell me about your... Did, by the way, do you still sail?
Ted Turner 3:26 ↗
No. I'm a fly fisherman. I'm your neighbor up in Montana.
Host 3:26 ↗
Yes. Well, when are you going to come see me?
Ted Turner 3:30 ↗
Well, let's go now for heaven's sake.
Host 3:30 ↗
No. No, we can't do that. But when did you stop sailing?
Ted Turner 3:34 ↗
I really started stopping in 1980 when CNN started. I realized I was going to have to give up something because I was, as the book says, I was going broke. Which a lot of people predicted that we would go broke with CNN and we came very close, but we just barely squeaked by and without any government bailouts, too.
Host 3:55 ↗
Good for you.
Ted Turner 4:05 ↗
I didn't even think about a government bailout, you know. I've got the private enterprise to bail me out.
Host 4:16 ↗
And if we're continuing with the sailing now, you won the America's Cup.
Ted Turner 4:20 ↗
I won 600 trophies approximately.
