Masayoshi Son said President Macron challenged him in early April during a state visit to Japan to build an AI data center in France by June 1, asking if he was quick. Son agreed to try for two gigawatts, then raised it to five gigawatts via text. In two months, SoftBank secured three gigawatts across three sites between Dunkirk and Douchy, and is evaluating an additional three gigawatts. Son committed to deliver five gigawatts, the largest in Europe, with a 75 billion euro investment, or close to $750 billion including chips and systems. He said SoftBank aggregates project financing with hyperscaler customers, not funding it all. He argued Europe must adopt AI to avoid being left behind by the US and China, calling it a national security issue. He proposed making France a center for AI robots, converting electricity exports into intelligence exports, and discussed this with Macron.
